Book The Commercialized Crafts of Thailand

Download or read book The Commercialized Crafts of Thailand written by Erik Cohen and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2000-07-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together two decades of research into the process of commercialization of the folk crafts of Thailand: the conditions of its emergence, the parties involved in its development, the changes in the processes and organization of production which accompany it, the channels through which commercialized craft products are marketed, the nature of the audiences which they reach, and the transformations in appearance and meaning which the products undergo as a result of their commercialization. Each chapter deals with a specific issue in a particular context, but virtually all of them relate to one or another of these principal aspects of the process of commercialization. Part I explores the commercialization of hill tribe textiles, particularly those of the Hmong refugees from Laos. Part II presents a series of case studies of the various ways in which the products of lowland Thai "craft villages" became commercialized.

Book Why Me Mama

Download or read book Why Me Mama written by Micky Wever and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-05-21 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You have a mildly retarded little girl. When author Micky Wever heard the final diagnosis of her daughter Brennan, she and her family were anguished. Still they refused to allow challenges to hinder the growth and joys in the life of their child Brenan. Why Me, Mama is a memoir that takes the family and the reader on journeys to remember from Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland, Southeast Asia, and then to California (with forays to India). Wever shares her stinging tears, heartaches, struggles, and times of triumphs of Brenan, her special childalong with moments of rejoicing. It tells about lessons in flexibility and searching a path of acceptance, also the chronicle of a mothers celebration of her daughters accomplishments and insight. The authors purpose for writing Why Me, Mama is to reach out to those who are raising children with disabilities. She hopes to help people feel the gift of having a disabled child. The disabled did not ask for these limitations. For people with disabilities, it is a lifetime struggle. They need an abundance of encouragement. Thus, parents and family members should learn how to emphasize the strength of these children and help them achieve goals that are within their capabilities. Wever doesnt claim to have all the answers. There is no perfect pattern for raising disabled children. But she points out the importance of being willing to live with uncertainties, to have faith, and to make a difference with love, compassion, and perseverance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although stretching back into the unwritten and often mythic past, traditional Malay performing arts have, until recent times, been almost totally neglected. In recent years, the subject has begun to attract the serious scholarly interest it deserves. Such attention is timely, for the principal theatre genres, including Mak Yong, Wayang Kulit and the comparatively modern Bangsawan, have begun to suffer decline. Indeed, many of them are on the verge of extinction and, with time, will come the loss of an important facet of the native Malay genius. This volume by an acknowledged expert on Malaysian theatre, Ghulam-Sarwar Yousof, is a pioneering work on the subject, an invaluable contribution to Malay cultural studies. It discusses theatre from the perspectives of history, performance principles, functions and problems that have contributed to the decline of traditional performing arts in Malaysia. Also included is a chapter on Semangat, the Malay concept of soul, a seminal belief whose understanding allows for a deeper appreciation of Malay theatre and its role in traditional society. A vital forerunner of several books on the traditional performing arts and cultural traditions of the Malays, this volume is a landmark in cultural research by a Malaysian scholar.
