Book Mobilities of the Highly Skilled towards Switzerland

Download or read book Mobilities of the Highly Skilled towards Switzerland written by Laure Sandoz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the strategies of migration intermediaries from the public and private sectors in Switzerland to select, attract, and retain highly skilled migrants who represent value to them. It reveals how state and economic actors define “wanted immigrants” and provide them with privileged access to the Swiss territory and labour market. The analysis draws on an ethnographic study conducted in the French-speaking Lake Geneva area and the German-speaking northwestern region of Switzerland between 2014 and 2018. It shows how institutional actors influence which resources are available to different groups of newcomers by defining and dividing migrants according to constructed social categories that correlate with specific status and privileges. This research thus shifts the focus from an approach that takes the category of highly skilled migrant for granted to one that regards context as crucial for structuring migrants’ characteristics, trajectories, and experiences. Beyond consideration of professional qualifications, the ways decision-makers perceive candidates and shape their resource environments are crucial for constructing them as skilled or unskilled, wanted or unwanted, welcome or unwelcome.

Book Leading with Sense

Download or read book Leading with Sense written by Valérie Gauthier and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's business environment demands a new approach to leadership, one that effectively connects individuals and organizations in the midst of change. Leading with Sense offers a new, practical approach to meeting this challenge. Drawing on her experience as a poetic translator and her expertise in cross-cultural leadership, Valérie Gauthier outlines the tenets of savoir-relier: a framework for building sensible, trustworthy, and lasting relationships that enables leaders to value difference, work across boundaries, and navigate complex systems. Savoir-relier teaches leaders to tap into their senses in the midst of strategizing, allowing them to act intuitively and rationally at once. Few leaders dare to claim that their "gut feelings" are critical to their decisions. But, by engaging their intuition, they are able to draw on experience, better appreciate their environment, build confidence, and summon the courage to tackle the task at hand. Leading with Sense trains readers to be poets and translators in the business context. With savoir-relier, we can write our own stories, deciphering the challenges that we face with acumen, humility, and respect. Using real-world examples of this pioneering approach, Gauthier provides readers with methods and tools for cultivating a savoir-relier mindset to build positive relationships, nurture diversity, drive mindful innovation, and foster success.

Book excerpt: The Treasure Punt is a delightfully-written and illustrated book in which corporate storyteller and human resources strategist Peter Christie uses the anecdotal form to bring home some important lessons for those on both sides of the job market: recruiters and people looking to be recruited. Christie's central metaphor is that of a pirate Captain (Captain Black-bug), representing a leader of a company, who sails the seven seas on his ship (The Bountiful), looking for treasure. Along the way Black-bug encounters many adventures, each of which teaches him something about making the best of his crew, and experiences, to maximise his material gain. If you read The Treasure Punt as a recruiter, you will find some powerful tools for bringing the right talent on-board in your organisation, and if you are a candidate, for making yourself a desirable workplace treasure. The book is a rollicking good read that will have you chuckling into your coffee cup, making complicated scenarios that stalk business seem simple and approachable, and imparting a sense of can-do confidence and savoir-faire.
