Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scientist and former evangelical argues that holding onto a belief in a literal, historical Adam has forced many Christians to reject science and become intellectually isolated from the modern world. The Bible’s first man stands at the center of a crisis that is shaking much of Christianity. In the evangelical world, scholars have been ostracized and banished from their academic communities for endorsing a modern scientific understanding of the world, even as they remained strong Christians. Self-appointed gatekeepers of traditional theology demand intellectual allegiance to an implausible interpretation of the Genesis creation story, insisting that all humanity must be descended from a single, perfect human pair, Adam and Eve. Such a view is utterly at odds with contemporary science. It wasn’t always this way. Karl Giberson spotlights the venerable tradition of Christian engagement with new knowledge and discoveries. When global exploration, anthropology, geology, paleontology, biblical studies, and even linguistics cast doubt on the historicity of Adam and his literal fall into sin, Christians responded by creatively reimagining the creation story, letting Adam “evolve” to accommodate his changing context. Even conservative evangelical institutions until recently encouraged serious engagement with evolutionary science, unhindered by the straitjacket of young-earth creationism, intelligent design, or other views demanding that Adam be a historical figure. Giberson calls for a renewed conversation between science and Christianity, and for more open engagement with new scientific discoveries, even when they threaten central doctrines. Christians should not be made to choose between their faith and their understanding of the universe. Instead, as Giberson argues, they should follow in the once robust tradition of exploring science openly within the broad contours of Christian belief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Brian Zahnd began "to question the theology of a wrathful God who delights in punishing sinners, and has started to explore the real nature of Jesus and His Father. The book isn’t only an interesting look at the context of some modern theological ideas; it’s also offers some profound insight into God’s love and eternal plan." —Relevant Magazine (Named one of the Top 10 Books of 2017) God is wrath? Or God is Love? In his famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Puritan revivalist Jonathan Edwards shaped predominating American theology with a vision of God as angry, violent, and retributive. Three centuries later, Brian Zahnd was both mesmerized and terrified by Edwards’s wrathful God. Haunted by fear that crippled his relationship with God, Zahnd spent years praying for a divine experience of hell. What Zahnd experienced instead was the Father’s love—revealed perfectly through Jesus Christ—for all prodigal sons and daughters. In Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Zahnd asks important questions like: Is seeing God primarily as wrathful towards sinners true or biblical? Is fearing God a normal expected behavior? And where might the natural implications of this theological framework lead us? Thoughtfully wrestling with subjects like Old Testament genocide, the crucifixion of Jesus, eternal punishment in hell, and the final judgment in Revelation, Zanhd maintains that the summit of divine revelation for sinners is not God is wrath, but God is love.

Issues addressed in the volume include individual and corporate salvation, salvation with regard to women, the poor, the oppressed, and the natural world.

This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses a topic of interest to many people who are seeking to better understand the Christian doctrine of salvation (soteriology). It is written to provide a systematic biblical and theological critique of a particularly popular perspective of this doctrine that has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, namely Calvinism. The book is structured around the so-called five points of Calvinism, commonly referred to by the acronym TULIP: Total depravity, Unconditional election, Limited atonement, Irresistible grace, and Perseverance of the saints. Following an initial chapter outlining the historical development of the doctrine, each of the five points are examined in subsequent chapters. Each point is described in the words of prominent Calvinist scholars, key biblical texts purporting to support the doctrine carefully evaluated, and a series of theological issues related to the point are raised and discussed.
Download or read book The way to be saved spiritually written by DAVID KWAK and published by GOGOSPEL. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law, as the first covenant that God gave to the Israelites, is the covenant of God that never be able to condemn. However, the deeds by the Law as the deeds of the flesh performed by the Law is to commit sin. Because through the mind of the flesh that the devil deceives, we are not able to serve God, who is spirit. Due to the sin of Adam and Eve that they followed the serpent as the devil instead of the will of God in the Eden Garden, their spirit and even their offspring’s spirit had died to God. In this way the human being have been born as sinners with the original sin, having a spirit that is dead to God. So that the human being have been living with their mind of the flesh and a spirit that is dead to God. Thus, human being have not been able to serve God, who is spirit. To save the Israelites who become such sinners, first off God gave them the Law as the first covenant, and made the Israelites live to keep the Law through their mind of the flesh, because they have a spirit that is dead to God. This period is the age of the Law and the age of the First Covenant, that the Israelites of the Old Testament era had been living. By the way to the Israelites who had been serving idols through their minds of the flesh in the world of the darkness, God gave the Law to them and made them keep the Law through the mind of the flesh. In this way God gave them the age of the Law as the training period and disciplining period that let them to get off their idols and to serve God through the Law. However, because the deeds by the Law is to commit sin, the Israelites was not able to serve God. Therefore, God gave the gospel as the new covenant that becomes the way to be saved spiritually to them in order to let them believe it and live the spiritual life. However, the Jews, who are the descendants of the Israelites, still adhere strictly to the Law of Moses to this day, claiming that they alone are the children saved of God, and rejecting the spiritual gospel. Nevertheless, God made the apostles preach the spiritual gospel, so that the people who was saved through this gospel built the early church to serve God spiritually. Moreover, God made the children saved of the early church live a spiritual life among the sinners in the world, performing by the spiritual deeds according to the spiritual gospel. By the way since the apostles, the forebears were not aware spiritually of the spiritual gospel that the apostles were aware of spiritually, thus, the forebears were not born again from their spirits that were dead to God. And they were living customarily according to their deeds by the Law through their mind of the flesh. Thus, they preached the spiritual gospel through the deeds of the flesh performed by the Law, instead of the spiritual gospel which the apostles had preached through their spirits born again, Therefore, even the churches today that claim to preach the spiritual gospel, known as the Reformed Churches, have not fulfilled the spiritual salvation. Because to serve God, they have believed and followed the spiritual gospel as the new covenant through their mind of the flesh, but not their spirit born again. In another words, if the Reformed Churches perform the gospel of the salvation through the deeds of the flesh, but not the spiritual deeds, God is not able to listen from them. Thus, they are not able to be saved from their original sin, so that they become to live as the sinners with the original sin. It means that because they are not aware spiritually concerning the faith by the mind of the flesh and the faith by the spirit born again, also concerning the mind of the flesh and the spiritual mind by the spirit born again, they are living with the deeds by the Law through the mind of the flesh deceiving by the devil, but not the spirit born again. These spiritual matters of God can only be aware through the evidence of spiritual faith, as mentioned in Hebrews 11, rather than through judgment based on the mind of the flesh and the sight of the flesh. When we are aware spiritually of these spiritual matters through faith given by God, we become to be born again as the righteous from the spirit that had died to God due to Adam’s sin. And we become to receive the Counselor as the Spirit promised into our temple of the hearts as our spirit born again, then we become to fulfill our salvation. Therefore, we who have been saved become to live the spiritual life and worship God, according to the leading by the Jesus being with each of our Counselors. In this way we as the children saved of God become to live the spiritual life in the world of the darkness until the Second Coming of Jesus. And after the Judgment, we will lift up into the Kingdom of God for our eternal life with the disembodied spirit due to the death with the flesh by the Judgment. Concerning such spiritual process of the salvation mentioned above, when you are aware spiritually of the spiritual words of God as follows, that I, as the author of this book interpreted the spiritual gospel given by the new covenant, you will be performing the way to be saved spiritually. This book 「the way to be saved spiritually」 is the book to introduce 「those books with spiritual interpretation」 as follows that I wrote for the gospel of the New Testament that God gave as the new covenant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross stands as the very epicenter of Christianity, the very heart of the gospel. Because of this, one does not stray far from the heart of the Christian faith when he asks, “For whom has Christ accomplished so great a salvation?” Answers to that question have historically fallen in two broad categories. Either Jesus died for all people without exception, or he died only for those whom the Father has chosen to save. Recently, a mediating view has arisen, arguing that we should not choose between these options, but that Jesus died with multiple intentions for all without exception and for the elect alone. In this book, Michael Riccardi offers a critical evaluation of the multiple intentions view from the perspective of classic particularism. The book demonstrates that while the third way proposed is attractive at first blush, beneath the surface it faces insurmountable biblical and theological problems—including the redefinition of the nature of the atonement itself. Riccardi demonstrates that particular redemption is the teaching of the text of Scripture against the objections of one of its strongest opponents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence is present in the very heart of religion and its sacred traditions – also of Christianity and the Bible. The problem, however, is not only that violence is ingrained in the mere existence of religions with their sacred traditions. It is equally problematic to realise that the icy grip of violence on the sacred has gone unnoticed and unchallenged for a very long time. The present publication aims to contribute to the recent scholarly debate about the interconnections between violence and monotheistic religions by analysing the role of violence in the New Testament as well as by offering some hermeneutical perspectives on violence as it is articulated in the earliest Christian writings. Contributors include: Andries G. van Aarde, Paul Decock, Pieter G.R. de Villiers, Ernest van Eck, Jan Willem van Henten, Rob van Houwelingen, Kobus Kok, Tobias Nicklas, Jeremy Punt, Jan G. van der Watt, and Wim Weren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although my first four books deal with variouscontroversial issues in the church today, the substanceof this book strikes at the very heart of some centraldoctrines held dear by many modern believers. Just becausecertain beliefs have survived for centuries in church dogma andtheological textbooks, that is no guarantee that such doctrinesare biblical. I appealed to more than 900 different Scripturepassages in this work to both expose those doctrinal errors, andto reveal the truth regarding some essential biblical realities.I do hope the reader will set aside all religious prejudices andhonestly consider this straightforward presentation of whatGod actually says about such matters.
