Book excerpt: When multibillionaire Ryan Cunningham reencounters his college lover, Carna Ferrar, the last thing he expects is his cock's immediate response to her. After a year of his privates failing him at critical moments, he's more than willing to lose himself in Carna's slick, hot depths. Seeing her reluctance to get involved with him again, he threatens to deny her grant. He coerces her into accompanying him on an interplanetary journey through his immediate past, when his impotency problems increased. He's determined to keep her with him until she removes her curse. He's determined to keep her. Period. In a dying-hope effort to fund her children's burn clinic, the last person Carna Ferrar intended to approach for a construction loan was Ryan Cunningham, but she did. Now, if she doesn't remove her curse, he'll withdraw his foundation's funding. He wants his dreams of a family to love for a lifetime and she will give it to him. She cannot resist the memories of once having loved him with all her heart. But his blackmailing her and his obvious intention to dominate her life make her push him away again-this time for good. They have a past. Can they build a forever future?

Book Krieg in den Medien

Download or read book Krieg in den Medien written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In den Blick gerät, was Medien verbreiten.

Book Armed Forces

Download or read book Armed Forces written by Robert Eberwein and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In war films, the portrayal of deep friendships between men is commonplace. Given the sexually anxious nature of the American imagination, such bonds are often interpreted as carrying a homoerotic subtext. In Armed Forces , Robert Eberwein argues that an expanded conception of masculinity and sexuality is necessary in order to understand more fully the intricacy of these intense and emotional human relationships. Drawing on a range of examples from silent films such as What Price Glory and Wings to sound era works like The Deer Hunter, Platoon, Three Kings, and Pearl Harbor , he shows how close readings of war films, particularly in relation to their cultural contexts, demonstrate that depictions of heterosexual love, including those in romantic triangles, actually help to define and clarify the nonsexual nature of male love. The book also explores the problematic aspects of masculinity and sexuality when threatened by wounds, as in The Best Years of Our Lives, and considers the complex and persistent analogy between weapons and the male body, as in Full Metal Jacket and Saving Private Ryan .

Book excerpt: Who tried to bomb Japan with bats? Who invented the air-gun in 250BC? Which stories should we believe? The so-called Dambusters raid was all but ineffective; the Hurricane not the Spitfire was the champion of the Battle of Britain; Singapore did not fall because all the guns were pointing the wrong way' and who would go to war over a game of football, a pig, or an old bucket? Oppenheimer fluffed his lines after the first atomic test; virtually every well-known quote attributed the Duke of Wellington is wrong; Churchill had a BBC voice impersonator record all his famous WW2 speeches as he was invariably too busy or too 'tired and emotional' to do it himself and no-one at the time called WW1 'The War to end all Wars'. Will you believe the truth?

Book Beyond the Multiplex

Download or read book Beyond the Multiplex written by Barbara Klinger and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-eighties, more audiences have been watching Hollywood movies at home than at movie theaters, yet little is known about just how viewers experience film outside of the multiplex. This is the first full-length study of how contemporary entertainment technologies and media—from cable television and VHS to DVD and the Internet—shape our encounters with the movies and affect the aesthetic, cultural, and ideological definitions of cinema. Barbara Klinger explores topics such as home theater, film collecting, classic Hollywood movie reruns, repeat viewings, and Internet film parodies, providing a multifaceted view of the presentation and reception of films in U.S. households. Balancing industry history with theoretical and cultural analysis, she finds that today cinema's powerful social presence cannot be fully grasped without considering its prolific recycling in post-theatrical venues—especially the home.

Book Carpe Data CONNECT

Download or read book Carpe Data CONNECT written by Jim Ryan and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever had the feeling you were being guided down a specific path in life? A real, deep in your guts, crap in your pants inclination? What if you came to believe you were placed on this earth to do something that would change everything? What would you do? What would you be willing to do? Everything is connected. This much Jim Ryan figured out at a young age. But he also foresaw the application of this physical property in the digital world—a calling to connect every person on the planet to each other and to the collective intelligence of human kind. Through the realization of this vision, each of us can now do more, get more, access more than ever before thanks to a device we hold in our hand. But like many great discoveries, this new connectivity has a dark side. In this fast-paced, introspective memoir, written by one of the world’s defining players in the mobile revolution, Ryan takes us along on his quest to deliver what he first imagined in 1987; something he called the Total Interactive Communications Device (the TIC)—something we have all come to know as the smartphone.

Book Miss May Does Not Exist

Download or read book Miss May Does Not Exist written by Carrie Courogen and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miss May Does Not Exist, by Carrie Courogen is the riveting biography of comedian, director, actor and writer Elaine May, one of America’s greatest comic geniuses. May began her career as one-half of the legendary comedy team known as Nichols and May, the duo that revolutionized the comedy sketch. After performing their Broadway smash An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Elaine set out on her own. She toiled unsuccessfully on Broadway for a while, but then headed to Hollywood where she became the director of A New Leaf, The Heartbreak Kid, Mikey and Nicky, and the legendary Ishtar. She was hired as a script doctor on countless films like Heaven Can Wait, Reds, Tootsie, and The Birdcage. In 2019, she returned to Broadway where she won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in The Waverly Gallery. Besides her considerable talent, May is well known for her reclusiveness. On one of the albums she made with Mike Nichols, her bio is this: “Miss May does not exist.” Until now. Carrie Courogen has uncovered the Elaine May who does exist. Conducting countless interviews, she has filled in the blanks May has forcibly kept blank for years, creating a fascinating portrait of the way women were mistreated and held back in Hollywood. Miss May Does Not Exist is a remarkable love story about a prickly genius who was never easy to work with, not always easy to love and frequently often punished for those things, despite revolutionizing the way we think about comedy, acting, and what a film or play can be.

Book excerpt: Mark is a newcomer to gay life, and to the gay summer community of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, the gay mecca of the mid-Atlantic seaboard. The beautiful, available men, the sudden freedom, and the intense scrutiny of his every asset on the beach draw Mark into this complex world where he learns the rules of beach life, with its exultation, stresses, and, ultimately, mystery. As prominent gay men die one-by-one throughout the summer, Dr. Mary Fox, the new county Medical Examiner, is pulled into a world she never knew but to which she has surprising connections. Obsessive love of opera, traditional Catholicism, unknown drugs, homophobia, U.S. Army chemical warfare researchers, alleged police incompetence, hysterical news media, and catty witticisms mix together as an increasingly divided community struggles to solve the mystery before the next victim appears. Mark finds that he must wrestle with his own demons and the divided life that he leads. By August, the question at every party and tea dance is the same: who will be the next person to receive “Tosca’s kiss?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Who knew doctors could be flat-out funny? In fact, who knew they were so smart? For several decades, the last page of Diversion, the leisure magazine for physicians, held a monthly contest for doctors. Their best is offered in this volume. Could Julius Caesar have been an orthopedist (I came, I saw (ed), I conquered”)? Would our litigious society cause MDs to experience flashes of barristopratfallophilia? When utilization review comes to Washington, one physician envisions government posts such as Joint Sheaves of Chaff. Might a sports team be known as The Heimlichs (they never choke under pressure), or The Sphincters (Nothing gets by them, and they have the best tight end in the business.) Another posits that a GI series is a military baseball competition. And somewhere in this great country there is – or certainly should be – a podiatrist named Mehta Tarsal. The surface has just been abraded.

Book Ecofeminism and Rhetoric

Download or read book Ecofeminism and Rhetoric written by Douglas A. Vakoch and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By drawing on the complex interplay of ecology and feminism, ecofeminists identify links between the domination of nature and the oppression of women. This volume introduces a variety of innovative approaches for advancing ecofeminist activism, demonstrating how words exert power in the world. Contributors explore the interconnections between the dualisms of nature/culture and masculine/feminine, providing new insights into sex and technology through such wide-ranging topics as canine reproduction, orangutan motherhood and energy conservation. Ecofeminist rhetorics of care address environmental problems through cooperation and partnership, rather than hierarchical subordination, encouraging forms of communication that value mutual understanding over persuasion and control. By critically examining ways that theory can help deconstruct domineering practices—exposing the underlying ideologies—a new generation of ecofeminist scholarship illuminates the transformative capacity of language to foster emancipation and liberation.
