Book Head Start Social Services

Download or read book Head Start Social Services written by Gary Lacy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. Project Head Start, a federal child development program for low-income families, serves both the mother and her children. Previous studies have emphasized Head Start's influence on the child in terms of cognitive gains, social development, and social-emotional development. A continuing problem to understanding the extent of Head Start impact on families is the absence of reliable information about Head Start's influence on the mother and how that influence transfers to the family as they work toward self-sufficiency. This study investigated two issues: (1) the experiences, perceptions, and levels of involvement of mothers who participate in Head Start social services, and (2) how these mothers describe their benefits and relate these benefits to family experiences such as increased problem-solving, coping, and parenting skills.

Book excerpt: CEDRIC DEAN is a leader, an educator, and sometimes even a psychologist, but most of all, he is a mentor, motivating the misguided with the same sizzling enthusiasm that allowed him to transform from a gangster to a genius. Growing up in Charlotte N.C., he had aspirations of being a thug, but after regimented years of learning, labor and loneliness, he preserved. Now he offers the lessons he learned on his voyage from criminal to catalyst in this inspiring book. How to Save Our Children from Crime, Drugs and Violence is the essential blueprint for saving America's children from the curse of criminality. Cedric begins by outlining what it takes to rescue our children: reason, restraint and resolve. The goal isn't just to save one, but one million. "We are the ones who get children to sell drugs, rob and kill, and we can get them to stop." Cedric often tells Federal Prisoners. Cedric Dean's personal and prison experiences shed light on critical lessons, rousing readers just as he roused correctional staff and inmates at his Leaders Breed Leaders seminars. His transformational message is for anyone looking for the solution to save our children from crime, drugs and violence, and more - anyone looking to make a difference in a world gone wild.

Book Kids in and Out of Trouble

Download or read book Kids in and Out of Trouble written by Margaret O. Hyde and published by Dutton Juvenile. This book was released on 1995 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dan Josselyn Memorial PublicationSpecialists from archaeology, ethnohistory, physical anthropology, and cultural anthropology bring their varied points of view to this subject in an attempt to answer basic questions about the nature and extent of social change within the time period. The scholars' overriding concerns include presentation of a scientifically accurate depiction of the native cultures in the Central Mississippi Valley prior and immediately subsequent to European contact and the need to document the ensuing social and biological changes that eventually led to the widespread depopulation and cultural reorientation. Their findings lead to three basic hypotheses that will focus the scholarly research for decades to come.Contributors include:George J. Armelagos, Ian W. Brown, Chester B. DePratter, George F. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FBI and the Department of Justice point out that while the overall crime rates have remained fairly steady in recent years, the arrest rates for juveniles accused of violent crimes have risen dramatically. In addition, experts contend that a growing population of adolescent males will lead to a wave of crime in the early years of the twenty-first century. "America is a ticking violent crime bomb, and there is little time remaining to prepare for the blast," the Council of Crime in America warns. Contributors to this anthology grapple with the various challenges posed by the problem of crime and violence committed by society's youngest members. - Introduction.
