Book excerpt: Since the phenomenal success of her 2006 album Back to Black, Amy Winehouse has rarely been out of the news. Her extraordinary talent as a performing artist has long been overshadowed by her private life, her turbulent relationship with the media and her very public battle with addiction. Saving Amy is not just a candid account of Amy Winehouse's struggle to overcome her own personal demons, but also a sympathetic look at the reality of a family living and dealing with addiction. The book is based on exclusive interviews, diaries and personal recollections of international interviewer Daphne Barak, who spoke intimately with the Winehouse family in London, St Lucia and other locations.

Book Loving Amy

Download or read book Loving Amy written by Janis Winehouse and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Amy was one of those rare people who made an impact . . . She was a bundle of emotions, at times adorable and at times unbearable. . . . Amy’s passing did not follow a clear line. It was jumbled, and her life was unfinished—not life’s natural order at all. She left no answers, only questions, and in the years since her death I’ve found myself trying to make sense of the frayed ends of her extraordinary existence.” Arguably the most gifted artist of her generation, Amy Winehouse died tragically young, aged just twenty-seven. With a worldwide fan base and millions of record sales to her name, she should have had the world at her feet. Yet in the years prior to her death, she battled with addiction and was frequently the subject of lurid tabloid headlines. Amy’s mother, Janis, knew her in a way that no one else did. In this warm, poignant, and at times heartbreaking memoir, she tells the full story of the daughter she loved so much. As the world watched the rise of a superstar, then the free fall of an addict to her tragic death, Janis simply saw her Amy: the daughter she’d given birth to, the girl she’d raised and stood by despite her unruly behavior, the girl whose body she was forced to identify two days after her death—and the girl she’s grieved for every day since. Including rare photographs and extracts from Amy’s childhood journals, Loving Amy offers a new and intimate perspective on the life and untimely death of a musical icon.

Book excerpt: These are stories rooted in Kansas soil, in country roads and small towns, in characters you swear you have met before, men and women who tug at your heart and get under your skin. The landscape where they live is both familiar and exotic, deeply felt and vividly described, from a writer clearly at home in the natural world. Save Your Own Life is a strong and satisfying collection, with language that can punch you in the solar plexus-just the right phrase, just what you have always known. -Sharman Apt Russell, author of Standing in the Light: My Life as a Pantheist and Hunger: An Unnatural History In Save Your Own Life Amy Sage Webb establishes herself as a major Midwestern voice who is not afraid to both love and critique the people of her region. Webb cares about her characters, and she instills them with personality and heart-and with needs we can both feel and understand. She knows the world of work, and what she turns her narrative lens upon teaches us something about who we are and how we can live: fully, completely, intentionally. Her characters' struggles-for love, for appreciation, for success-mirror our own. Webb is a writer who knows her stuff. From the details within her stories to the architecture of story itself, her hand is steady, her gaze is sure. -Kevin Rabas, author of Bird's Horn, Lisa's Flying Electric Piano, Spider Face Reading Amy Sage Webb is a delight. Save Your Own Life is full of mismatched people attracting and repelling each other. Brothers are in love with the same woman at different times. An LA artist and KC food writer meet in his mis-built studio. The husband of a mentally ill woman remains "fixed and ever-blooming," like dreams doomed in a desert. In "The Memory of Water" a woman older than any in her veterinary class has the task of running donor horses until they die, but dealing with death brings her warmth and romance. "The Wedding Gift" is a gift in itself. The robust stories in Save Your Own Life are full of surprises, are clear, open and singing all through. -Thomas Fox Averill, author of rode and Secrets of the Tsil Cafe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of this three-volume historical thriller explores why the innocent suffer. In a dream the Saint of Death delivers a warning as Molly McCraken flees with her family from a deadly invasion. Her niece, Amy, is abducted and her dad wants to search for her before she is sold to smugglers. Then Amy's dad falls in an ambush and her mom is taken by disease. Only Aunt Molly is left to save Amy. The story of Saving Amy begins in Gonzales when town-folks learn that their men have been executed by an invading army. Next, they will attack the town. Amy's mom and Aunt Molly pack their belongings and flee with the town-folks for the safety of the United States. They are relieved when Amy's dad finds them on the road and wonder how he managed to escape. He won't give them a direct answer. The first night they shelter themselves from the cold blowing rain by sleeping under their wagon where the Angel of Death appears to Aunt Molly in a dream and warns her about the future. The next morning Molly watches the unprepared refugees line up to trudge up a mud and manure covered road to the United States. She asks a passing sandy-haired captain if he has seen or heard of her missing husband, but he has never heard of him. As the refugees press on through cold days and wet sleepless nights, they become infected with disease. They must bury their dead where they fall. Grief stricken and exhausted, Aunt Molly struggles to find a reason why the innocent must suffer. Then tragedy strikes. Amy is abducted. Amy's dad flies into a rage and her mom collapses in despair. Gathering his rifle, he prepares to search for Amy. Aunt Molly advises him to wait until help can join him, but he will never forgive himself if he doesn't try to find her presently on his own. He insists that Molly take Amy's mom to San Felipe and wait for him. When they arrive, they find warm dry weather and food. But Amy's mom has no appetite since like many other refugees she has become ill. Then Amy's dad returns. He wants to take them to the coast and put them on a ship to New Orleans so that he may continue to search for Amy. Molly fears the invading army, but he fears Amy will be traded or sold if he doesn't find her soon. Amy's mom agrees and the next morning they turn south toward Matagorda. About halfway to Matagorda, they see an orange glow beneath darkening clouds in the north and hear muffled cannon as San Felipe comes under attack. The next day Amy's mom dies from cholera. In honor of her beloved sister, Aunt Molly decides she will continue south with her brother-in-law to search for Amy. In Matagorda they discover there are no longer any outbound ships for Molly to board. As they flee from town they are ambushed. Amy's dad is killed, and Aunt Molly fights her captors until losing consciousness. While in dreamy unconsciousness the Saint of Death appears to Molly again to show her the way out. Traffickers are reveling in their victory when she awakens bound in their camp. After they drink themselves to sleep, she struggles against her blood-slick knots. If she escapes up the road, they will find her. The best way out is through the thicket surrounding the camp. So, she pushes her way through thorns and darkness on her hands and knees until a lizard runs up her arm and into her hair. Bolting to her feet she screams, awakening her captors who then crash through the thicket after her. Down again she crawls furiously through winding game tunnels until her clothes are shredded and her body bleeds. At dawn she breaks out of the thicket onto a riverbank where sunlight dances on rippling water that cools her burning flesh. She can't hear the crashing and yelling of her captors anymore but knows she must keep moving.
