Book Resilience and Collapse in African Savannahs

Download or read book Resilience and Collapse in African Savannahs written by Michael Bollig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the causes and consequences of environmental change in East Africa, asking whether local African communities are sufficiently resilient to cope with the ecological and social challenges that confront them. It focuses on the savannahs of the Baringo-Bogoria basin, and the surrounding highlands of Kenya’s northern Rift Valley that form the social-ecological system of the specialised cattle pastoralists and niche agricultural farmers who occupy these semi-arid lands. Historical studies of resilience spanning the past two centuries are linked with analysis of current environmental challenges, and the ecological, social, economic and political responses mounted by local communities. The authors question whether the most recent challenges confronting the peoples of eastern Africa’s savannahs – intensified conflicts, mounting poverty driven by demographic pressures, and dramatic ecological changes brought by invasive species – might soon led to a collapse in essential elements of the specialised cattle pastoralism that dominates the region, requiring a re-orientation of the social-ecological system. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Eastern African Studies.

Book The Curse of Knight s Island

Download or read book The Curse of Knight s Island written by Sidney St. James and published by BeeBop Publishing Group. This book was released on with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Curse of Knight's Island Alles Gute zum Geburtstag A Romance Mystery & Suspense Thriller The old woman sat there dominated by a sense of profound sadness. Fatigue etched on her worn face. She warmed her shivering hands against the crackling fire. The sorrow grew more extreme each year she spent in her quiet and lonely house. The solemn walls continued to revive the memory of her daughter's death encountered at the hands of a member of a wealthy Knight Family descendant. She stood frozen in front of her mirror and saw the deceiving hollow soul that reflected in the tear-stained looking glass. The marks left no room to see her true self any longer. All that remained was a shell of a woman, a woman wasted away. As she gazed into the mirror she reminded herself again of the curse left behind for the gruesome murder of her daughter. The curse was spoken by the old woman in the year 1567 to the man she blamed for her daughter's murder. It still echoed over many generations of the Knight Family history. "When one Knight family member spends three years on this Island, or two, unneglected, unslighted, and never regretting having come, I forgive you to the extent of my very first curse." 'When the first marriage is loveless on both sides and unselfish on both sides, may that be the last marriage on which the second curse falls!" "When someone loves life and willingly gives it for a Knight in peril, gives it without thought of other glory or reward than the thanks of a Knight, let the third curse go away." Her terrible curse, which came true for five hundred years remained unbroken. But, will our famous detective, Vincent Gideon, come out of retirement, again, finally solve the curse before it's too late? Will he lose the woman he has loved his entire life? What about his son? Will he die a violent death as predicted in the Curse? So many unanswered questions. The first edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley published on New Year's Day in 1818 sat on the nightstand of John Pilkington, owner of the Portland Sentinel. There was something about this novel that intrigued the old recluse. By the time this romantic suspense ends, the famed detective's friend will have read the story at least a dozen times. Why? Book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Download or read book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil written by John Berendt and published by Random House. This book was released on 1994-01-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Book Cursed from Birth

Download or read book Cursed from Birth written by William S. Burroughs. Jr. and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2006-08-23 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being the son of counter-culture author William S. Burroughs is bound to be a trial. After all, the man who frequented lesbian dives and had a fascination with firearms couldn't possibly make that great of a father. Perhaps inevitably, William Jr. (called Billy) referred to himself as "cursed from birth" and in the book of the same name editor David Ohle collects parts of Billy's third and unfinished novel Prakriti Junction, his last journals and poems, and correspondence and conversations to recreate this tortured life. Endowed with the sufferings — but not the patience — of Job, Billy's life was often characterized by tragedy and frustration, although there were also pockets of success and levity. More than just the memoir of a casualty of the Beat Generation, Cursed From Birth provides rare insight in Billy's father, as well as his scene, friends, and times. It also provides an all-too-familiar story of familial difficulties that anyone with difficult parents can understand and appreciate.

Download or read book Savannah s Midnight Hour written by Lisa L. Denmark and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Savannah’s Midnight Hour argues that Savannah’s development is best understood within the larger history of municipal finance, public policy, and judicial readjustment in an urbanizing nation. In providing such context, Lisa Denmark adds constructive complexity to the conventional Old South/New South dichotomous narrative, in which the politics of slavery, secession, Civil War, and Reconstruction dominate the analysis of economic development. Denmark shows us that Savannah’s fiscal experience in the antebellum and postbellum years, while exhibiting some distinctively southern characteristics, also echoes a larger national experience. Her broad account of municipal decision making about improvement investment throughout the nineteenth century offers a more nuanced look at the continuity and change of policies in this pivotal urban setting. Beginning in the 1820s and continuing into the 1870s, Savannah’s resourceful government leaders acted enthusiastically and aggressively to establish transportation links and to construct a modern infrastructure. Taking the long view of financial risk, the city/municipal government invested in an ever-widening array of projects—canals, railroads, harbor improvement, drainage— because of their potential to stimulate the city’s economy. Denmark examines how this ideology of over-optimistic risk-taking, rooted firmly in the antebellum period, persisted after the Civil War and eventually brought the city to the brink of bankruptcy. The struggle to strike the right balance between using public policy and public money to promote economic development while, at the same time, trying to maintain a sound fiscal footing is a question governments still struggle with today.

Book excerpt: She didn’t need any more surprises… Not when Nora Pride’s life was changing at a pace faster than the Indy 500. With her birthday a whisper away, she was prematurely becoming a grandmother. She’d just had her first hot flash (to her archrival’s undisguised glee). And Nora had gone from primo designer to prime suspect in one day when a priceless vase disappeared from a house she’d designed. The topper—sexy detective Calvin Caine was nipping at her heels. His rough-around-the-edges authority was causing her whole world to heat up. And making her feel as empowered as a modern-day Scarlett O’Hara. As Nora set out to crack the case of the missing vase, she found an even more welcome surprise. Older didn’t mean wiser. It just meant feeling more free to be yourself.
