Download or read book Master Plots written by Jared Gardner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2000-12-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Master Plots, Jared Gardner examines the tangled intersection of racial and national discourses in early American narrative. While it is well known that the writers of the early national period were preoccupied with differentiating their work from European models, Gardner argues that the national literature of the United States was equally motivated by the desire to differentiate white Americans from blacks and Indians. To achieve these ends, early American writers were drawn to fantasies of an "American race," and an American literature came to be defined not only by its desire for cultural uniqueness but also by its defense of racial purity.

Book excerpt: Savage Awakening maps the journey of spiritual initiation experienced by Witches, Healers, and other Strange Creatures. The journey is unique for each of us, but the terrain is the same. This book maps that terrain and gives crucial information and support as you traverse this often treacherous territory. Grounding, assuring, supportive, and real, author Sadee Whip walks with the reader through the gut-wrenching, profound, beautiful, and terrifying experience that is Initiation. Written for people new to this path, as well as those who are advanced along it, the reader will discover information that is found nowhere else about the Four Paths of Initiation, and gain tools and insights for how to navigate this territory. Sadee is brutally honest about what the initiatory path is as she guides the reader with compassion, straight-talk, and keen insight through the remarkable journey of being utterly undone and remade into something truly strange. Initiation is real and it is savage. This book serves not only individuals on this path, but practitioners who are encountering the increasing number of people who are being caught up by it. The mitigating orientation and practical approach revealed in these pages can make the difference between swimming or sinking for those truly in the grips of this path. Throughout the book, Sadee charges us with becoming more relational, ecosystemic, and honoring of the many beings of the Unseen realm. Her wisdom guides us deeper into our own embodied wisdom and the ability to learn from the spirits themselves, leading us ultimately toward the ancient being at the heart of it all, the one she calls the Dragon Mother.

Book The Gothic Other

Download or read book The Gothic Other written by Ruth Bienstock Anolik and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary use of the Gothic is marked by an anxious encounter with otherness, with the dark and mysterious unknown. From its earliest manifestations in the turbulent eighteenth century, this seemingly escapist mode has provided for authors a useful ground upon which to safely confront very real fears and horrors. The essays here examine texts in which Gothic fear is relocated onto the figure of the racial and social Other, the Other who replaces the supernatural ghost or grotesque monster as the code for mystery and danger, ultimately becoming as horrifying, threatening and unknowable as the typical Gothic manifestation. The range of essays reveals that writers from many canons and cultures are attracted to the Gothic as a ready medium for expression of racial and social anxieties. The essays are grouped into sections that focus on such topics as race, religion, class, and centers of power.

Download or read book To Walk the Earth Again written by Christopher Trigg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Quick and the Dead explores the political dimension of Anglo-American Protestant writing about the future resurrection of the dead between the seventeenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. Reading histories, epic poetry, funeral sermons, and scientific tracts alongside works of eschatological exegesis, the book challenges the conventional scholarly assumption that Protestantism's rejection of purgatory prepared the way for the individualization and secularization of Western attitudes towards mortality. A deeper engagement with the complex history of resurrection theology reveals the importance of collective solidarity with the dead for Protestant social and political thought. Puritans, Anglicans, Quakers, and radicals looked to resurrection to understand their communities' prospects in the uncertain terrain of colonial America. They also expressed their conviction that political identities and religious duties did not expire with the mortal body but were carried over into the next life. This belief shaped their positions on a wide variety of issues, including the limits of ecclesiastical and civil power, the relationship of humanity to the natural world, and the emerging rhetoric of racial difference. In the early national and antebellum periods, secular and Christian reformers drew on the idea of resurrection to imagine how American republicanism might transform society and politics and ameliorate the human form itself. Early-modern Protestants really believed that they would live again in the flesh. By taking this belief seriously, this book opens up new perspectives on their mutually constitutive visions of earthly and resurrected existence"--

Book excerpt: A legendary adventurer seeking fame and treasure in 1880's Peru. A headstrong California beauty who'll do anything to protect her father, a professor determined to find the lost Incan city of Vilcapampa. If the jungle doesn't kill them, will love stand a chance? The lady has just met her match. He wasn't her type of man. And yet . . . "We're probably making a big mistake," he said roughly, and she nodded. "Very likely." "Are you sure this is what you want?" She drew in a deep, trembling breath. "More than anything." His reaction took her by surprise. He pulled her to him, his mouth crashing down on hers with bruising force, invading her with his tongue as he backed her toward the bed. It almost hurt, but she tasted his urgency, and heat and desire rose in her as sharp and strong. He shoved a hand through her hair, loosened the pins and let them scatter atop the mattress and onto the floor, raked his fingers through the loose braids to free it around her shoulders, splayed his fingers over her back, tugged at laces that held her jabot around her neck. He tossed it aside, unbuttoned her blouse and peeled it down her arms, freed her mouth for a moment to regard the Flynt Waist beneath with less than enthusiastic scrutiny. Heart hammering, she helped him untie the laces and stood silently when he slid it off her. . . . Virginia Brown has written more than fifty historical and contemporary romance novels. Many of her books have been nominated for Romantic Times' Reviewer's Choice Award, Career Achievement Award for Love and Laughter, and Career Achievement Award for Adventure.
