Book excerpt: Police executives must be responsive to the needs of the citizens in order to receive their cooperation. This study used survey responses from 190 residents of the unincorporated part of Washington County, Tennessee, to measure citizensâ satisfaction with the services provided by the Washington County TN Sheriffâs Office, and to determine what services and special components of the Sheriffâs Office were important to them. A significant difference was found in satisfaction with police services when compared by race, polite treatment by the police, type of contact with police, and night walking safety. However, no significant difference was found in satisfaction with police services when compared by socioeconomic status, fair treatment by the police, visibility of patrol cars in neighborhoods, and prior victimization. It was also found that the citizens felt the greatest needs of their Sheriffâs Office were more officers and more jail and administrative office space.

Book excerpt: Within the last forty years, numerous studies have been conducted to determine what variables affect citizens' satisfaction with police services. The present study, using survey responses from 100 residents in one city in upper East Tennessee, measured citizens' satisfaction with police services based on their own police-citizen contacts and neighborhood conditions; and, determined what types of police services the citizens desired or thought were important. A significant difference was found in satisfaction with police services when compared by race, polite and fair treatment by the police, the type of contact with police, and visibility of patrol cars in neighborhoods. However, no significant difference was found in satisfaction with police services when compared by socioeconomic status, night walking safety, and prior victimization. It was also found that citizens felt the greatest needs of their local police department were more officers and a police station open 24 hours a day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Citizenâs Police Academy allows citizens to attend the police academy to learn more about police departments and police work. While increasing in popularity, very little research has focused on participant impact. This study examines the impact of the Johnson City CPA on participantsâ attitudes and beliefs about police work. Surveys were analyzed to discover differences in age, education levels, gender and prior interest in police work concerning satisfaction, importance of training, and behavior change. Older respondents reported the most benefit from participation, while younger respondents were more likely to change their behaviors. Those with mid level educations gained the most insight from the program. Females responded more positively about the academy than did males. Prior interest in police work had no significant impact on participantsâ opinions. While exploratory in nature, this study lays the groundwork for further examination of the impact of CPAs on participantsâ attitudes and behaviors.

Are such events aberrations or are they extreme examples of a more general problem that plagues American police departments? Although such questions have been raised by the media, politicians, and police scholars and administrators, this is the first study to present a nationwide portrait of how rank-and-file police officers view these and other critical questions of police abuse of authority. Officers provided information on what types of abuse and attitudes toward abuse are observed in their departments, including the code of silence, whistle blowing, and the extent to which a citizen's race, demeanor, and class affect the way police officers treat them; what strategies (including first-line supervision, community policing, citizen review boards, and training) do police officers consider to be effective means of preventing police abuse of authority; and whether police abuse is a necessary byproduct of efforts to reduce and control crime. Responses are also analyzed according to rank, race, region of the U. S., and size of department.
