Book The Impact of Emotional Intelligence and Executive Coaching on Leader Effectiveness

Download or read book The Impact of Emotional Intelligence and Executive Coaching on Leader Effectiveness written by Ellen Brooks Van Oosten and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotional intelligence has been hailed as a hallmark of successful leaders since the term was popularized in the early 1990s. Shortly thereafter, executive coaching emerged as a popular and beneficial resource to support the development of managers and leaders in organizations. The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of both phenomena on leader effectiveness. This empirical study tests two research inquiries: does emotional competence predict leader effectiveness, and what impact does a quality coaching relationship have on leader effectiveness? Leader effectiveness is conceptualized as four constructs: job performance, personal vision, work engagement, and career satisfaction. Eighty-five senior executives in a North American financial services organization completed a leadership development experience which included training on emotional intelligence, multi-rater assessment, and work with an external executive coach. Survey responses were collected and triangulated with job performance data and multi-rater feedback. Results indicated that both emotional competence and a high-quality coaching relationship do indeed make a difference. Specifically, findings revealed that emotional competence directly and positively impacts performance and career satisfaction and that a quality coaching relationship leads to increased levels of work engagement, career satisfaction and expression of a personal vision. These results may be of particular benefit to scholars and practitioners interested in leader effectiveness, leader development, developmental relationships and emotions and coaching in the workplace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point in their careers, all managers face a frustrating and seemingly insurmountable challenge -- the highly intelligent, highly skilled direct report who is failing when he should be excelling. Often, this employee is destroying not only his own career, but also the morale of the rest of the team. While this behavior may initially seem willful, it is more than likely due to a lack of emotional intelligence -- the ability to comprehend one’s emotions, empathize with the feelings of others, and interact with people in ways that promote congenial working relationships. More than any other trait, emotional intelligence is the one variable that can transform a mediocre employee into an exceptional one. Managers now have a new and demanding role. They must become coaches who help their employees to develop emotional intelligence and the positive interpersonal relationships that result. And while this kind of corrective coaching may seem daunting and unpleasant to many managers, it is also achievable with the right tools. In Coaching for Emotional Intelligence, Bob Wall offers coaching strategies that will enable every manager to elicit excellence by improving the negative behaviors and communications flaws that are undermining an employee's performance. The book provides a structured format for formulating and delivering both praise and corrective feedback, as well as a step-by-step method and sample scripts for conducting a coaching session. Readers will: Overcome the fear of coaching on sensitive, personal issues. Learn the critical importance of praise--and how to give it. Understand the influences that shaped the behaviors of the individual being coached. Determine whether an employee is responding to corrective coaching, when to keep him -- and when to fire him. Create an action plan for teaching employees to identify and alter unwanted behavior. Master spontaneous coaching: delivering praise in 15-20 seconds -- and corrective feedback within 45 seconds. Formulate structured conversations when corrective coaching isn’t working. Create successful, detailed, and clear personal, team, and work evaluations and mission statements. The first book of its kind, Coaching for Emotional Intelligence is a thoughtful, realistic, and accessible guide that will change the way managers lead in the workplace -- and will ensure that their employees are reaching their full potential.

Book Emotional Intelligence As a leadership Strategy to Make Leaders Great

Download or read book Emotional Intelligence As a leadership Strategy to Make Leaders Great written by Dr. Whitney Stevens and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Phoenix, language: English, abstract: Twenty successful leaders in the United States participated in the study to explore the extent to which emotional intelligence supports leadership potential and success. Competent managers with strong leadership skills are scarce (Cafolla, 2008). According to Goleman (2001), EQ might predict up to 90% of the variance in leadership effectiveness by uncovering strong positive effects of leadership commitment and effectiveness that support strong influences on leadership effectiveness. This modified Delphi study extended research on the emotional intelligence competencies to explore future possibilities of improving leadership success at mid- to high-level management tiers. The results of this study provide evidence to support emotional intelligence and leadership potential, validating the need for EQ as a leadership strategy. The Delphi study results recommended training to increase EQ in leaders and asserted that leaders with high levels of EQ are likely to improve overall organizational results, reduce turnover, reduce fraud and low performance, improve moral, and make organizations a better place to work.

Book Emotional Intelligence and Cognitive Abilities

Download or read book Emotional Intelligence and Cognitive Abilities written by Pablo Fernández-Berrocal and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, not only psychologists are interested in the study of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Teachers, educator, managers, employers, and people, in general, pay attention to EI. For example, teachers would like to know how EI could affect student’s academic results, and managers are concerned about how EI influences their employees’ performance. The concept of EI has been widely used in recent years to the extent that people start to applying it in daily life. EI is broadly defined as the capacity to process and use emotional information. More specifically, according to Mayer and Salovey, EI is the ability to: “1) accurate perception, appraise, and expression of emotion; 2) access and/or generation of feelings when they facilitate thought; 3) understand emotions and emotional knowledge; and 4) regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth” (Mayer and Salovey 1997, p. 10). When new information arises into one specific area of knowledge, the work of the scientists is to investigate the relation between this new information and other established concepts. In this sense, EI could be considered as a new framework to explain human behaviour. As a young concept in Psychology, EI could be used to elucidate the performance in the activities of everyday life. Over the past two decades, studies of EI have tried to delimitate how EI is linked to other competences. A vast number of studies have reported a relation between EI and a large list of competences such as academic and work success, life satisfaction, attendee to emotions, assertiveness, emotional expression, emotional-based decision making, impulsive control, stress management, among others. Moreover, recent researches have shown that EI plays an important role in the prediction of behaviour besides personality and cognitive factors. However, it is not until quite recently, that studies on EI have considered the importance of individual differences in EI and their interaction with cognitive abilities. The general issue of this Research Topic was to expose the role of individual differences on EI in the development of a large number of competencies that support a more efficient performance in people’s everyday life. The present Research Topic provide an extensive review that may give light to the better understanding of how individual differences in EI affect human behaviour. We have considered studies that analyse: 1) how EI contributes to emotional, cognitive and social process beyond the well-known contribution of IQ and personality traits, as well as the brain system that supports the EI; 2) how EI contributes to relationships among emotions and health and well-being, 3) the roles of EI during early development and the evaluation in different populations, 4) how implicit beliefs about emotions and EI influence emotional abilities.

Book Assessing Leadership Effectiveness

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to contribute to a better understanding of effective leadership characteristics. More specifically, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of emotional intelligence and leadership behaviors as a predictor of group or organizational performance. This study evaluated the relationship of the Schutte (1998) 33-item Emotional Intelligence Scale and Bass and Avolio's (2004) full-range leadership model (MLQ 5X) and organizational performance in a high-performance Midwestern automotive trim and parts manufacturing organization (N = 860).Company-wide manager/supervisor and subordinate perceptions of leadership behaviors and leadership outcomes (MLQ 5X) indicated significant positive associations for Idealized Influence Attributed and Behavior for transformational leadership styles and Contingent Reward in the transactional leadership styles. Further, Effectiveness (leadership outcome) exhibited the highest significant positive association between these groups. Additional regression analysis of Schutte 33-item Emotional Intelligence Scale against Bass and Avolio's full-range leadership model (MLQ 5X) further identified that the highest shared predictor variance of leadership patterns to emotional intelligence were Inspirational Motivation and Contingent Reward for this manufacturing population.Post-hoc analysis of production department managers/supervisors and subordinates presented significantly higher positive associations for transformational leadership styles of Idealized Influence Attributed and Inspirational Motivation. The transactional leadership style of Contingent Reward exhibited the highest significant positive association between production managers/supervisors and subordinate personnel. Further, Effectiveness was identified as the most significant positive association of the three leadership outcomes within this group.Recommendation for practice and further research focuses on the need for increased training and research as it applies to an environment using a formalized process improvement program.

Book Emotional Intelligence and Self Efficacy in Leadership Effectiveness

Download or read book Emotional Intelligence and Self Efficacy in Leadership Effectiveness written by Ramchunder Yvette and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role that personal attributes play in predicting leadership success will become more prominent as leadership situations become more complex and varied (Herbest & Maree, 2008). The multidimensional increase in complexities from organisational structures to societal demands may render leaders ineffective if they are unable to adjust to these complexities. The question can be asked whether this ability to adjust to the complexities is innate and for the purpose of this research whether a leader's effectiveness is associated with the psychological constructs of Emotional Intelligence and Self-Efficacy.
