Book Satire in the Songs of Renart Le Nouvel

Download or read book Satire in the Songs of Renart Le Nouvel written by John Dickinson Haines and published by Droz Librairie. This book was released on 2010 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places the songs of Renart le nouvel in the broader context of this late medieval romance. As argued here, Renart le nouvel was written in two different stages, its first book around 1260 and its second around 1300. The first book presents situations and animals that stand for key events and characters in 1250s Flanders, mostly pertaining to the famous quarrel of the Avesnes and Dampierre families. The second book ushers in a more apocalyptic mood that reflects the deteriorating political situation in Flanders in the final decades of the thirteenth century. The songs of Renart le nouvel give voice both to a mounting apocalyptic mood and to a related cynicism towards courtly love. As the embodiment of duplicity, Renart the fox sings an especially cynical song, one that is ultimately passed on to an animal that makes a brief appearance in our romance but is soon destined for fame: Fauvel the ass. In particular, the emerging genre of the motet expresses the duplicitous and satirical spirits of the fox and the ass. French text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humorist asked his readers to share their least favorite tunes and chronicles the hilarious responses. When funnyman Dave Barry asked readers about their least favorite tunes, he thought he was penning just another installment of his weekly syndicated humor column. But the witty writer was flabbergasted by the response when over 10,000 readers voted. “I have never written a column that got a bigger response than the one announcing the Bad Song Survey,” Barry wrote. Based on the results of the survey, Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs is a compilation of some of the worst songs ever written. Dave Barry fans will relish his quirky take. Music buffs too will appreciate this humorous stroll through the world’s worst lyrics. The only thing wrong with this book is that readers will find themselves unable to stop mentally singing the greatest hits of Gary Puckett. Praise for Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs “Barry is his usual puckish self, but the real surprise here is how funny many of the survey respondents are.” —Kirkus Reviews “Who can resist such a book?” —Publishers Weekly

Book This is the Sound of Irony Music Politics and Popular Culture

Download or read book This is the Sound of Irony Music Politics and Popular Culture written by Katherine L. Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of irony in music is just beginning to be defined and critiqued, although it has been used, implied and decried by composers, performers, listeners and critics for centuries. Irony in popular music is especially worthy of study because it is pervasive, even fundamental to the music, the business of making music and the politics of messaging. Contributors to this collection address a variety of musical ironies found in the ’notes themselves,’ in the text or subtext, and through performance, reception and criticism. The chapters explore the linkages between irony and the comic, the tragic, the remembered, the forgotten, the co-opted, and the resistant. From the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, through America, Europe and Asia, this provocative range of ironies course through issues of race, religion, class, the political left and right, country, punk, hip hop, folk, rock, easy listening, opera and the technologies that make possible our pop music experience. This interdisciplinary volume creates new methodologies and applies existing theories of irony to musical works that have made a cultural or political impact through the use of this most multifaceted of devices.

Book Irony Satire Parody and the Grotesque in the Music of Shostakovich

Download or read book Irony Satire Parody and the Grotesque in the Music of Shostakovich written by Esti Sheinberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of Shostakovich has been at the centre of interest of both the general public and dedicated scholars throughout the last twenty years. Most of the relevant literature, however, is of a biographical nature. The focus of this book is musical irony. It offers new methodologies for the semiotic analysis of music, and inspects the ironical messages in Shostakovich‘s music independently of political and biographical bias. Its approach to music is interdisciplinary, comparing musical devices with the artistic principles and literary analyses of satire, irony, parody and the grotesque. Each one of these is firstly inspected and defined as a separate subject, independent of music. The results of these inspections are subsequently applied to music, firstly music in general and then more specifically to the music of Shostakovich. The composer‘s cultural and historical milieux are taken into account and, where relevant, inspected and analysed separately before their application to the music.
