Book Invisible Agents

  • Author : David M. Gordon
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2012-11-26

Download or read book Invisible Agents written by David M. Gordon and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invisible Agents shows how personal and deeply felt spiritual beliefs can inspire social movements and influence historical change. Conventional historiography concentrates on the secular, materialist, or moral sources of political agency. Instead, David M. Gordon argues, when people perceive spirits as exerting power in the visible world, these beliefs form the basis for individual and collective actions. Focusing on the history of the south-central African country of Zambia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, his analysis invites reflection on political and religious realms of action in other parts of the world, and complicates the post-Enlightenment divide of sacred and profane. The book combines theoretical insights with attention to local detail and remarkable historical sweep, from oral narratives communicated across slave-trading routes during the nineteenth century, through the violent conflicts inspired by Christian and nationalist prophets during colonial times, and ending with the spirits of Pentecostal rebirth during the neoliberal order of the late twentieth century. To gain access to the details of historical change and personal spiritual beliefs across this long historical period, Gordon employs all the tools of the African historian. His own interviews and extensive fieldwork experience in Zambia provide texture and understanding to the narrative. He also critically interprets a diverse range of other sources, including oral traditions, fieldnotes of anthropologists, missionary writings and correspondence, unpublished state records, vernacular publications, and Zambian newspapers. Invisible Agents will challenge scholars and students alike to think in new ways about the political imagination and the invisible sources of human action and historical change.

Book The Year that Defined American Journalism

Download or read book The Year that Defined American Journalism written by W. Joseph Campbell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2006 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Year That Defined American Journalism examines the 1897 conflict between the activist "yellow journalism" of William Randolph Hearst and its objective antithesis represented by the New York Times. No other year, arguably, has produced more memorable, singularly important, or defining moments in American journalism. This exceptional year brought the establishment of the White House Press Corps; the introduction of half-tone photographs to newspaper printing; the publication of American journalism's most famous editorial, "Is There A Santa Claus?"; and the inauguration of newspaper history's longest-running comic strip, the "Katzenjammer Kids." Moreover, the outcome of this conflict reshaped the profession and gave American journalism its modern contours. This work enriches not only our understanding of this decisive moment in journalism history, but also our understanding of how to do media history.

Book In the Devil s Snare

  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 030742636X

Download or read book In the Devil s Snare written by Mary Beth Norton and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning historian Mary Beth Norton reexamines the Salem witch trials in this startlingly original, meticulously researched, and utterly riveting study. In 1692 the people of Massachusetts were living in fear, and not solely of satanic afflictions. Horrifyingly violent Indian attacks had all but emptied the northern frontier of settlers, and many traumatized refugees—including the main accusers of witches—had fled to communities like Salem. Meanwhile the colony’s leaders, defensive about their own failure to protect the frontier, pondered how God’s people could be suffering at the hands of savages. Struck by the similarities between what the refugees had witnessed and what the witchcraft “victims” described, many were quick to see a vast conspiracy of the Devil (in league with the French and the Indians) threatening New England on all sides. By providing this essential context to the famous events, and by casting her net well beyond the borders of Salem itself, Norton sheds new light on one of the most perplexing and fascinating periods in our history.
