Book Water Resources and Decision Making Systems

Download or read book Water Resources and Decision Making Systems written by Cecilia Tortajada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water data and information are essential to support efforts to understand, manage, allocate, utilize and protect water resources. The linkages between Water Information Systems and needs of decision makers are complex, but can be encapsulated in a Driving Force (Policy Needs) – Monitoring – Data Management – Reporting framework. The rapid development in water policy reforms in many sectors and growing emphasis on demand-side policy solutions to water resources management has created an information imbalance. This imbalance can be characterised in terms of an inverted pyramid with implementation of many water policy initiatives supported by little data and information, especially related to economic and financial elements, to help guide decision makers toward more effective and efficient water resources management strategies. Additionally, as stress and demands on water systems increase and water becomes a more valued resource, this tends to increase the value of water information both for water providers and users. Nevertheless, many countries are reporting that the capacity to collect water information is being undermined by a lack of resources, while expertise to collect, analyse and interpret water data for decision makers is being lost. Finally, the impact of climate change on hydrological regimes represents a key potential stress on water systems. This issue could be the catalyst for adapting policies to provide more efficient and effective use and management of water resources and advance institutional and governance reforms in the water sector. This book is based on a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.

Book Saskatchewan s Water Resources and Utilization

Download or read book Saskatchewan s Water Resources and Utilization written by A. T. Prince and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The development of an adequate supply of water is a major problem in the prairies. This problem arises from several causes: insufficient rainfall over large areas, particularly during the growing season; the uneven and erratic distribution of precipitation in the region; and the geographic setting of prairie streams. The non-uniform distribution of the water resources in the province presents a very real problem of making the water available when and where it is needed, a problem with which the province is dealing effectively. This paper is concerned only with the broader questions of long-term availability and adequacy of water resources in the prairie region"--P. 1.

Book Managing Water Resources in a Time of Global Change

Download or read book Managing Water Resources in a Time of Global Change written by Alberto Garrido and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global change possesses serious challenges for water managers and scientists. In mountain areas, where water supplies for half of the world population originate, climate and hydrologic models are still subject to considerable uncertainty. And yet, critical decisions have to be taken to ensure adequate and safe water supplies to billions of people, millions of farmers and industries, without further deteriorating rivers and water bodies. While global warming is known to cause glaciers’ retreat and reduced snow packs around the world, it is not clear that mountain discharge will be lower. What is widely recognised is that water management must be adapted to accommodate significant regime changes. However, this inevitably involves managing transboundary rivers, adding further complexity to putting principles in practice. This book takes global warming and the importance of mountain areas in world water resources as the starting point. First, it provides detailed reviews of the processes going on in several rivers systems and world regions in Europe (Rhône and Ebro), North America (Canadian Rockies, Western US and Mexico), the Middle East (Jordan), Africa (Tunisia, Kenya and South Africa). These contexts provide case studies and examples that show the difficulties and potential for adaptation to global change. Land-use, economics, numerous modeling approaches are some of the cross-cutting issues covered in the chapters. The volume also includes the views of water practitioners, with two chapters authored by members of the US-Canada International Joint Commission, an industrialist from Western Canada and an environmental leader in Spain. By combining a rich set of contexts and approaches, the volume succeeds in offering a view of the global challenges faced by water agencies, international donors and researchers around the world. A case is made in some chapters to seek adaptive strategies rather than trying to reduce or control resources variability. This requires factoring in land-use, social and economic aspects, especially in developing countries. Another conclusion is that complex problems can and must be posed and negotiated with the help of models, mapping techniques and science-based facts. However complex these may be, there are ways to translate them to easily interpretable and visualisations of alternative scenarios and courses of action. This book provides numerous examples of the potential of such approaches to draft environmental programmes solve transboundary disputes and reduce the economic consequences of droughts and climate instability.

Book Water Resources of North America

Download or read book Water Resources of North America written by Asit K. Biswas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonardo da Vinci, the eminent Renaissance scholar and philosopher said, "water is the driver of nature". Many may have considered it to be an overstatement in the past, but at the beginning of the third millennium, no sane individual would disagree with Leonardo's view. Water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource for most of the world's citizens. The current trends indicate that the overall situation is likely to deteriorate further, at least for the next two decades, unless the water profession eschews its existing "business as usual" practices, which can only allow incremental changes to occur. Somewhat surprisingly, the water profession as a whole neither realised nor appreciated the gravity of the global water situation as late as 1990, even though a few serious scholars have been pointing out the increasing criticality of the situation from around 1982. For example, the seriousness of the crisis was not a major issue, either at the International Conference on W ater and the Environment, which was organised by the UN system in Dublin and also at the UN Conference on Environment and Development at Rio de Janeiro. Held in 1992, both are considered to be important events for the water sector of the past decade. It is now being increasingly recognised that the Dublin Conference was poorly planned and organised, and thus not surprisingly it produced very little, if any, worthwhile and lasting results.

Book Canada Saskatchewan South Saskatchewan River Basin Study Technical Appendix II

Download or read book Canada Saskatchewan South Saskatchewan River Basin Study Technical Appendix II written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Saskatchewan River is the most reliable supply of good quality water in the southern half of the province. However, Alberta also uses the resources of the river extensively for irrigation. Both Alberta and Saskatchewan had plans to develop more irrigated land and Saskatchewan also had development plans for recreational use, leading to concerns over the adequacy of the resource. The Canada-South Saskatchewan River Basin study was undertaken to provide information to guide water management and to help ensure that the water resources of the basin can meet the needs of existing and future users. This technical appendix to the report summarizes the water quality of the water resources of the Saskatchewan portion of the river basin. It identifies the water quality issues in the basin; evaluates existing water quality data bases; fills information gaps; establishes basin-specific water quality objectives for specific uses; and recommends a monitoring plan for the basin. Background information on the study and the water resources of the study area are also included.

Book Water Use Analysis Model WUAM Demonstration

Download or read book Water Use Analysis Model WUAM Demonstration written by Atef M. Kassem and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstration of the application of the Water Use Analysis model (WUAM) on the Saskatchewan portion of the South Saskatchewan River basin focusing on data requirements and preparation, scenario development, and model runs, and on the analysis of the results. The study investigated the water resources impacts of four alternative development scenarios. The scenarios, all assumed to correspond to the year 2000, covered two levels of future water use in Alberta and two levels of irrigation development in Saskatchewan. Only the irrigated area in Saskatchewan was varied; all other irrigation parameters were assumed to remain constant. The system was also simulated under the extreme condition of Alberta's using 50% of the monthly natural streamflow. Irrigation water uses by irrigation area, node, and basin total and consumptive uses from Lake Diefenbaker for irrigation, evaporation, and diversion were analyzed for the various scenarios and their frequencies of occurrence were presented.
