Book Human Dimensions of the Saskatchewan Forest Habitat Project

Download or read book Human Dimensions of the Saskatchewan Forest Habitat Project written by Bonita Lynn McFarlane and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saskatchewan Forest Habitat Project (SFHP) was undertaken to help integrate timber and wildlife management objectives into forest management practices in the Weyerhaeuser Saskatchewan Limited Forest Management License Agreement (FMLA) area. Habitat supply models, which use the concept of indicator species, were developed for six of the approximately 250 species of birds and mammals found in the FMLA area. An important component of assessing the viability of the SFHP is determining its impacts on stakeholders. A study was undertaken to examine two user groups (wildlife viewers and moose hunters), their use of the FMLA area, and the potential impact of habitat supply models on their activities. Mail surveys were used to collect information on wildlife use, attitudes toward wildlife, and viewing and hunting preferences. Both groups were similar in terms of some socioeconomic characteristics, attitudes toward wildlife, and reasons for participating, but differed in terms of the factors that detracted from their wildlife experiences. The Weyerhaeuser FMLA area is important for viewing and hunting activities. However, simply managing for species and their habitat may not meet the demands of these users. Incorporating an experience-based management framework with habitat supply models may be necessary to meet their needs.

Book excerpt: This document provides an overview of some forest management considerations at the landscape level, with the overall intent of focusing primarily on site-level applications that will integrate wildlife values into the forest planning process based on an indicator species approach. Indicator species are sensitive to changes in their habitat conditions and also represent the needs of other species associated with these habitat types. The document describes indicator species requirements for moose, woodland caribou, pileated woodpecker, ovenbird, beaver, and snowshoe hare. For each species, certain forest management practices are suggested and other species benefitting from those practices are listed. A glossary is included.

Book Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen

Download or read book Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen written by Canada-Alberta Partnership Agreement in Forestry and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was aimed primarily at technology tranfer, demonstrating the integration of silvicultural and harvesting techniques for protecting spruce understories in mixedwoods. This report provides details of the silvicultural component. It stresses post-harvest implications, particularly blowdown risk and growth and yield potential of released understory, and regeneration and growth of spruce, aspen, and poplar on mechanically harvested mixedwood sites. The project addresses concerns about maintaining the coniferous component of mixedwood forests and finding alternatives to clearcutting. It covers the current status of operational understory protection and some related aspects of integrated resource management.

Book Saskatchewan Long term Integrated Forest Resource Management Plan

Download or read book Saskatchewan Long term Integrated Forest Resource Management Plan written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document sets out Saskatchewan's integrated forest management plan, intended to allow for sustainable development of the province's forest resource. The first part of the document presents an overview of the forest resource, including its value (both economic and non-economic), distribution, and characteristics. It provides the administrative context for the plan, including the role of the plan in national and international forest resource agreements, and outlines the concept of integrated forest resource management, the goals of the plan, and the eleven strategies that are to be used to implement the plan. These strategies relate to such goals as renewable resource management, urban forestry, economic development, tourism, funding, inventory, and research. The second part consists of supporting material: a summary of the public consultation process involved in forming the plan, an assessment of forest resource issues, timber production scenarios, and the protected areas policy.

Book Wildlife Habitats in Managed Forests

Download or read book Wildlife Habitats in Managed Forests written by Jack Ward Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That is what this book is about. It is a framework for planning, in which habitat is the key to managing wildlife and making forest managers accountable for their actions. This book is based on the collective knowledge of one group of resource professionals and their understanding about how wildlife relate to forest habitats. And it provides a longoverdue system for considering the impacts of changes in forest structure on all resident wildlife.

Book Forest Plans of North America

Download or read book Forest Plans of North America written by Jacek P. Siry and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Plans of North America presents case studies of contemporary forest management plans developed for forests owned by federal, state, county, and municipal governments, communities, families, individuals, industry, investment organizations, conservation organizations, and others in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The book provides excellent real-life examples of contemporary forest planning processes, the various methods used, and the diversity of objectives and constraints faced by forest owners. Chapters are written by those who have developed the plans, with each contribution following a unified format and allowing a common, clear presentation of the material, along with consistent treatment of various aspects of the plans. This work complements other books published by members of the same editorial team (Forest Management and Planning, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resource Management), which describe the planning process and the various methods one might use to develop a plan, but in general do not, as this work does, illustrate what has specifically been developed by landowners and land managers. This is an in-depth compilation of case studies on the development of forest management plans by the different landowner groups in North America. The book offers students, practitioners, policy makers, and the general public an opportunity to greatly improve their appreciation of forest management and, more importantly, foster an understanding of why our forests today are what they are and what forces and tools may shape their tomorrow. Forest Plans of North America provides a solid supplement to those texts that are used as learning tools for forest management courses. In addition, the work functions as a reference for the types of processes used and issues addressed in the early 21st century for managing land resources. - Presents 40-50 case studies of forest plans developed for a wide variety of organizations, groups, and landowners in North America - Illustrates plans that have specifically been developed by landowners and land managers - Features engaging, clearly written content that is accessible rather than highly technical, while demonstrating the issues and methods involved in the development of the plans - Each chapter contains color photographs, maps, and figures
