Book Inspector Bourke in Sydney Bangkok and Moscow

Download or read book Inspector Bourke in Sydney Bangkok and Moscow written by Tibor Timothy Vajda and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-04-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is cheaper and more effective: guns or heroin? How does Detective Inspector Frank Ironman Bourke find out who set up the international robbery and heroin smuggling operation? And what is the role and motivation of the officers of the Russian and American consulates? * * * There is a series of unsolved jewellery robberies in Sydney. It ends when a well-known cat-burglar Rudy Valentik falls off a second storey balcony during a robbery. Before he dies, he confesses hes the burglar the police are looking for. His last words are, he gives the tips, he pays, but he doesnt name any names. Media attacks on the police stop for a while until newspaper magnate Crawford Forests house is burgled and jewels are taken away in circumstances similar to the previous robberies. Forests newspapers start a daily campaign against the inefficient police and personally against the minister and the commissioner. Commissioner Jack Warren orders the head of the Break and Enter squad, Patrick OMalley, his brother-in-law, to organise a task force. The commissioner orders OMalley to make Sydneys best detective, Inspector Frank Ironman Bourke head of the day-to-day work of the task force. OMalley tries to stop giving Bourke a leading role because there has been long standing animosity between Bourke and his boss, OMalley, Bourke having fought for years against the corrupt methods of OMalley and his cronies (stealing money, drugs and pornographic films found during house searches, etc.) The results of a widespread investigation are fed into a central computer and it points to a Double Bay jeweller, Maurice Rainier, whose secretary Joy Kearney travels to overseas fashion shows to model jewellery approximately two weeks after every robbery. All stolen jewels contain large gemstones and none of them are offered for sale in Australia. Bourke suspects that Rainier gets the goldsmith working for him to remove the precious stones and smuggle them out of the country. Commissioner Warren uses a ruse to blackmail Joy Kearneys occasional lover, Stewart Kendall, to follow Joy on her next overseas trip and orders Bourke to covertly follow the couple and act as a bodyguard for Kendall. Two weeks after the latest jewel robbery the three people fly to Bangkok separately where Kendall is to have a holiday with Joy. She is supposed to model imitation jewellery for customers who can order the chosen items to be made up for them in real gold and gemstones by the Rainier firm. In Bangkok everything happens in a flash: Thai gangsters attack Joy and steal her case with the gemstones set in gold coloured base metal. Joy visits the gang boss to ask for his help and while she is there Kendall and Huey a cooperative Thai detective steal back the case and get Joy out of the house. Next day Joy takes the case to Ralph Rainier, a jeweller cousin and partner in crime of the Sydney jeweller. She is paid in heroin which she takes to the Russian Embassy to exchange it for alexandrites, rare semi-precious stones, as she has been trusted to do on previous occasions. In front of the embassy, Lok Lie, a Thai gang boss man tries to grab the heroin-filled case from Joy in a motorcycle attack but the Russian guards prevent this and take Joy, the gangster and the heroin-filled case into the embassy. Kendall, Bourke and Huey fight the guards in vain to save Joy and the case but have to retreat when threatened with guns. On the basis of Bourkes report, the Sydney and Bangkok police make coordinated raids on the premises of the Rainier cousins in Sydney and Bangkok where they find dismantled stolen jewellery, large amounts of alexandrites and heroin. Maurice Rainiers goldsmith confesses to melting down stolen jeweller

Book All the Wrong Moves

Download or read book All the Wrong Moves written by Sasha Chapin and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enthralling journey into the world of chess--a story of heartbreak, obsession, failure, and the hunger for greatness Sasha Chapin is a victim of chess. Like countless amateurs before him--Albert Einstein, Humphrey Bogart, Marcel Duchamp--the game has consumed his life and his mind. First captivated by it as a member of his high school chess club, his passion was rekindled during an accidental encounter with chess hustlers on the streets of Kathmandu. In its aftermath, he forgot how to care about anything else. He played at all hours, for weeks at a time. Like a spurned lover, he tried to move on, but he found the game more seductive the more he resisted it. And so, he thought, if he can't defeat his obsession, he had to succumb to it. All the Wrong Moves traces Chapin's rollicking two-year journey around the globe in search of glory. Along the way, he chronicles the highs and lows of his fixation, driven on this quest by lust, terror, and the elusive possibility of victory. Stylish, inventive, and laugh-out-loud funny, All the Wrong Moves is a celebration of the purity, violence, and beauty of the game.

Book excerpt: With the grim determination of an unrepentant rocker, Larry Frolick sets off on a 12,000-mile trek across Central Asia, brooding over the fate of its lost civilizations. From Kiev, Crimean Tartary, and Moscow, through the nomadic homelands of Uzbekistan, Kyrgizstan, Tien-Shan, and finally into distant Mongolia and Siberia, he explores a continent on the brink of a meltdown, a strange world lit harshly by the red afterglow of the Soviet collapse. His vivid account opens the door to a crowd of unlikely strangers: Mafiosi flatheads, salt-mine campers, fractious archaeologists, a conceptual artist who uses fresh corpses in his window displays, the very last of three Romanov princesses, an inept Chinese secret agent, a relentless Uzbek glottal probologist, disgruntled e-mail swains – and above all, Larissa, the moody Eurasian beauty who “just stepped out of a novel in her impossibly pointy Italian shoes.” With gleeful wit and a steely eye for detail, Frolick transports the reader to a world inhabited by a people burning with desire for something new to happen.

Book excerpt: A March 2024 Indie Next Pick "Powerful, relatable and crazily addictive, Bye, Baby takes an unflinching look at the battling forces of toxicity and love which define so many female friendships. I couldn't put it down." ––Rosie Walsh, New York Times bestselling author of Ghosted and The Love of My Life Every friendship has its shadow... On a brisk fall night in a New York apartment, 35-year-old Billie West hears terrified screams. It's her lifelong best friend Cassie Barnwell, one floor above, and she's just realized her infant daughter has gone missing. Billie is shaken as she looks down into her own arms to see the baby, remembering—with a jolt of fear—that she is responsible for the kidnapping that has instantly shattered Cassie’s world. Once fiercely bonded by their secrets, Cassie and Billie have drifted apart in adulthood, no longer the inseparable pair they used to be in their small Hudson Valley hometown. Cassie is married to a wealthy man, has recently become a mother, and is building a following as a lifestyle influencer. She is desperate to leave her past behind—including Billie, who is single and childless, and no longer fits into her world. But Billie knows the worst thing Cassie has ever done, and she will do whatever it takes to restore their friendship... Told in alternating perspectives in Lovering’s signature suspenseful style, Bye, Baby confronts the myriad ways friendships change and evolve over time, the lingering echoes of childhood trauma, and the impact of women’s choices on their lifelong relationships.

Book The Battle and the Breeze

Download or read book The Battle and the Breeze written by Sir Edward Ashmore and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Edward Ashmore, one of the key figures in the post-war history of the Royal Navy, rose to the highest rank in his chosen profession and later became Chief of the Defence Staff. In this his autobiography he gives a vivid insight into the life of an aspiring naval officer in the 1950s and 60s, and the preoccupations of high command during the 1970s. The Battle and the Breeze sheds much new light on many key aspects of post-1945 naval policy, such as the controversy surrounding CVA01 (the fleet carrier replacement programme), the crucial decision to procure the Sea Harrier, the lack of airborne early warning at the time of the Falklands war, and the Chevaline and Type 22 programmes. Ashmore also makes fair and sound judgements on his contemporaries such as Lord Louis Mountbatten. Not only does The Battle and the Breeze make an important contribution to our understanding of recent naval policy, but it is also potentially the most significant naval historical autobiography of the post-1945 period.
