Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the basics, logic, and theory of statistics is essential for agricultural researchers for dealing with the interpretation of data. This volume presents some of the basic and necessary concepts of statistical tools, specifically as applied to the statistics of agriculture and allied fields. It covers basic statistics, design of experiments, sampling techniques, time series, inference outlines, forecasting models, data handling, and statistical software in an easy-to-understand manner that is aimed at students and researchers with little or no mathematical background. In the agriculture scenario, students and researchers face problems that can be addressed with statistical tools, planning of field experiments, collection of data, analysis, interpretation of the data, etc. In this book, statistical theories are discussed with the help of examples from real-life situations in agriculture and allied fields, followed by worked-out examples. Each chapter is followed by a number of problems and questions that will help readers gain confidence in solving those problems. The volume also provides an analysis of how data is important and introduces the reader to using statistical software such as MS Excel, SAS (Statistical Analysis System), JMP, Minitab, and R (from the R Foundation for Statistical Computing).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Monitoring theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Environmental and Ecological Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The Theme on Environmental Monitoring is largely concerned with strategies in the preparation of environmental impact assessments, as well as in many circumstances in which human activities carry a risk of harmful effects on the natural environment.. All monitoring strategies and programmes on environment have reasons and justifications which are often designed to establish the current status of an environment or to establish trends in environmental parameters. The content of the Theme provides the essential aspects and a myriad of issues that are great relevance to our world with respect to environmental monitoring. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs

Book SAS Programming for R Users

Book excerpt: SAS Programming for R Users, based on the free SAS Education course of the same name, is designed for experienced R users who want to transfer their programming skills to SAS. Emphasis is on programming and not statistical theory or interpretation. You will learn how to write programs in SAS that replicate familiar functions and capabilities in R. This book covers a wide range of topics including the basics of the SAS programming language, how to import data, how to create new variables, random number generation, linear modeling, Interactive Matrix Language (IML), and many other SAS procedures. This book also explains how to write R code directly in the SAS code editor for seamless integration between the two tools. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter so that you can test your knowledge and practice your programming skills.

Book An Introduction to Optimal Designs for Social and Biomedical Research

Download or read book An Introduction to Optimal Designs for Social and Biomedical Research written by Martijn P.F. Berger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing cost of research means that scientists are in more urgent need of optimal design theory to increase the efficiency of parameter estimators and the statistical power of their tests. The objectives of a good design are to provide interpretable and accurate inference at minimal costs. Optimal design theory can help to identify a design with maximum power and maximum information for a statistical model and, at the same time, enable researchers to check on the model assumptions. This Book: Introduces optimal experimental design in an accessible format. Provides guidelines for practitioners to increase the efficiency of their designs, and demonstrates how optimal designs can reduce a study’s costs. Discusses the merits of optimal designs and compares them with commonly used designs. Takes the reader from simple linear regression models to advanced designs for multiple linear regression and nonlinear models in a systematic manner. Illustrates design techniques with practical examples from social and biomedical research to enhance the reader’s understanding. Researchers and students studying social, behavioural and biomedical sciences will find this book useful for understanding design issues and in putting optimal design ideas to practice.

Book Working with Dynamic Crop Models

Download or read book Working with Dynamic Crop Models written by Daniel Wallach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-05-10 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical models are being used more and more widely to study complex dynamic systems (global weather, ecological systems, hydrological systems, nuclear reactors etc. including the specific subject of this book, crop-soil systems). The models are important aids in understanding, predicting and managing these systems. Such models are complex and imperfect. One fundamental research direction is to seek a better understanding of how these systems function, and to propose mathematical expressions embodying that understanding. However, this is not sufficient. It is also essential to have tools (often mathematical and statistical methods) to aid in developing, improving and using the models built from those equations. The book is specifically concerned with the application of methods to crop models, but much of the material is also applicable to dynamic system models in other fields. The goal of this book is to fill that gap. * State-of-the-art methods explained simply and illustrated specifically for crop models* Parameter estimation – applying statistical methods to the complex case of crop models, including Bayesian methods * Includes model evaluation, understanding and estimating prediction error* Offers a unique data assimilation by using the Kalman filter and beyond

Book Recurrent Events Data Analysis for Product Repairs Disease Recurrences and Other Applications

Download or read book Recurrent Events Data Analysis for Product Repairs Disease Recurrences and Other Applications written by Wayne B. Nelson and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survival data consist of a single event for each population unit, namely, end of life, which is modeled with a life distribution. In contrast, many applications involve repeated-events data, where a unit may accumulate any number of events over time. Examples include the number and cost of repairs of products, the number and treatment costs of recurrent disease episodes in patients, and the number of childbirths to statisticians. This applied book provides practitioners with basic nonparametric methods for such data, particularly the plot of the estimate of the population mean cumulative function (MCF), which yields most of the information sought. Recurrent Events Data Analysis for Product Repairs, Disease Recurrences, and Other Applications is the first book to present a simple, unified theory that includes data on costs or other "values" of discrete events, not just the number of events. It surveys computer programs that calculate and plot the MCF estimate with confidence limits, shows their output, and explains how to interpret such plots. Many such calculations can be easily done with a pocket calculator or spreadsheet program. Also, the book introduces basic Poisson and Cox regression models and parametric models, including homogeneous and nonhomogeneous Poisson processes and renewal processes.
