In their broad aspects'the two battles of Saratoga may be considered to mark definitely the turning point of the American Revolution in that the result brought to the cause of the hard-pressed-colonists the assistance of France, Spain, and Holland, thereby greatly increasing the-probability of eventually winning independence. To a hesitant, vacillating France awaiting the opportune moment to strike a telling blow at the British, Saratoga brought the decision for intervention - a decision which previous diplo matic negotiations had been unable to obtain. The active entrance of France into the war in june 1778, provided the financial, military, and naval support without which the American cause would have been practically hopeless. Though three more years of fighting were necessary in order to bring ultimate victory at Yorktown, Saratoga furnished the physical and psychological impetus which brightened a desperate cause at a moment when failure would have been disastrous. Without the success of American arms at Saratoga, it is difficult to see how the struggle could long have been continued. The park preserves sites associated with a significant American military victory during the Revolution. The battles of Saratoga rank among the most decisive in world history. Here in 1777 American forces met, defeated, and forced a major British army to surrender, an event which led France to recognize the independence of the United States and provide critical military support to the struggling Americans. Under a 1926 law, New York State began to acquire battlefield lands in preparation for the sesquicentennial of the battles. The battlefield was made part of the national park system in 1938 when Saratoga National Historical Park was authorized by the United States Congress. Since 1938, the portion of the Battlefield Unit owned by the National Park Service has been enlarged and three sites of the Old Saratoga Unit in Town of Saratoga have been added to the park: the General Philip Schuyler Estate in the village of Schuylerville, and the Saratoga Monument and Victory Woods in the village of Victory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Saratoga Monument Association The battles of Bemis Heights and of Saratoga (Stillwater), and the surrender of Lieutenant-General John Burgoyne, on the 17th of October, 1777, formed a niche in the Temple of Liberty which Patriotism will one day fill with an appropriate monument. Actuated by this sentiment, on the 17th of October, 1856, John A. Corey, George Strover, and other patriotic gentlemen, met at the old Schuyler mansion in Schuylerville, N. Y., and discussed the preliminary steps to be taken in the matter. On this occasion, Alfred B. Street delivered a poem; a banquet was given, and a celebration on a small scale held. The result of this meeting was the organization, in 1859, by Hamilton Fish, Horatio Seymour, John A. Corey, Peter Gansevoort, and others, of the Saratoga Monument Association, under a perpetual charter from the state of New York, whose object was the erection of a fitting memorial on the site of Burgoyne's surrender.
