Book Dweller in Shadows

Download or read book Dweller in Shadows written by Kate Kennedy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive biography of an extraordinary English poet and composer whose life was haunted by fighting in the First World War and, later, confinement in a mental asylum Ivor Gurney (1890–1937) wrote some of the most anthologized poems of the First World War and composed some of the greatest works in the English song repertoire, such as “Sleep.” Yet his life was shadowed by the trauma of the war and mental illness, and he spent his last fifteen years confined to a mental asylum. In Dweller in Shadows, Kate Kennedy presents the first comprehensive biography of this extraordinary and misunderstood artist. A promising student at the Royal College of Music, Gurney enlisted as a private with the Gloucestershire regiment in 1915 and spent two years in the trenches of the Western Front. Wounded in the arm and subsequently gassed during the Battle of Passchendaele, Gurney was recovering in hospital when his first collection of poems, Severn and Somme, was published. Despite episodes of depression, he resumed his music studies after the war until he was committed to an asylum in 1922. At times believing he was Shakespeare and that the “machines under the floor” were torturing him, he nevertheless continued to write and compose, leaving behind a vast body of unpublished work when he died of tuberculosis. Drawing on extensive archival research and spanning literary criticism, history, psychiatry and musicology, this compelling narrative sets Gurney’s life and work against the backdrop of the war and his institutionalisation, probing the links between madness, suffering and creativity. Facing death in the trenches, Gurney hoped that history might not “forget me quite.” This definitive account of his life and work helps ensure that he will indeed be remembered.

Book excerpt: Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics by Bliss Carman Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics is a poetry book by Canadian poet Bliss Driver, first published in 1904 in Boston by Carman LC Page's cousin and fellow Canadian poet Charles GD Roberts. Ots wrote an introductory article on the subject. "Sappho's Poetry" Sappho was an ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos who was included in the Greek canons of the nine poets of poetry. Most of his poetry, known and highly prized in antiquity, has been lost. But his reputation remains unwavering, supported by a fraction of the poem. Carman's method, as Roberts saw it. "Obviously this is imagining the lost song as it was discovered, and then translating it, because infinite translation is always persistent, even with the fluidity and freedom of work. It was a terrible job, as Robert admits, "as if sculptors today had to stand up respectfully and practice their craft and familiarity with the spirit, technique and atmosphere of history. Of him to revive A statue of Polyclitus or Praxiteles, which Ma Karman has been a success. "Written more or less concurrently with the love poem in Songs of the Sea Children, Sappho's new creation retains the shape of love from a woman's point of view. However, the sentiment that identifies Sappho is a Carman. Pure in sensitive and graceful pain. "

Also known by such names as the "Tenth Muse" and "The Poetess", Sappho was a prolific poet widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets of ancient times. As well as an extraordinary poet, she also represents a symbol of romantic love between women, the word lesbian and sapphic originating from her name and home island. The majority of Sappho's work is lost and what remains only does so as fragments. Despite this, her work has and continues to influence that of others significantly. This pocket-sized volume contains 45 of Sappho's existing poems and fragments, translated and interpreted by John Myres O'Hara and Henry de Vere Stacpoole. Contents include: "An Introduction by H. De Vere Stacpoole", "Sapphics by Algernon Charles Swinburne", "Poems Translated by John Myres O'hara", and "Fragments Translated by Henry De Vere Stacpoole". Wine Dark Press is proudly publishing this brand new collection of classic poems, now complete with an introductory essay by Charles Swinburne.
