Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Templars in Bologna A Multidisciplinary Approach

Download or read book Templars in Bologna A Multidisciplinary Approach written by Giampiero Bagni and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to use a multidisciplinary approach to study the Knights' Templars of Bologna, Italy. Archaeological, scientific, historical and archival sources are combined to consider the Templars in the context of Bologna’s growing economic and political power during this period. A complete picture of urban and suburban Templar properties in Bologna is provided, detailing lucrative activities such as Templar land use, agricultural innovations and wine production. Because the Crusades were influential in this era and directly impacted the urbanization of the city, the Bolognese Templars are also studied in relation to the five other military orders in Bologna, including the understudied Crucifers and Knights of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many formerly unexplored historical and archival sources are integrated with scientific data from this project’s archaeological excavations and architectural surveys of the Templar House in Bologna, allowing for its precise dating and the development of an architecturally accurate 3D film reconstruction of this property. Particular attention is also given to the Order's rise and fall under the ecclesiastical governance of the archbishops of Ravenna, as well as the Templar trial conducted by Archbishop Rinaldo da Concorezzo. In addition, the biography of the famous Templar brother Peter of Bologna is explored, due to his considerable impact on the events of the Templar trial of 1310. While many Freemasons believe Peter of Bologna escaped from the Paris trial and went to Scotland in 1313, bringing information crucial to that organization’s founding, the research included here suggests that Peter returned to Bologna instead, serving as a Hospitaller until his death in the city in 1329. This book therefore suggests alternative conclusions regarding Peter of Bologna’s death and legacy, based on the latest available interdisciplinary research.

Book Eating on the Move from the Eighteenth Century to the Present

Download or read book Eating on the Move from the Eighteenth Century to the Present written by Rita d’Errico and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on food and meals consumed during travel since the transport revolution and examines the ways in which the introduction of new forms of transport (propelled by steam and petrol engines), not only affected the way people travel but also led to a transformation in the way we eat. Eating on board a train is different from eating on a ship, and the same is true for other forms of transport. Such differences are not simply a question of quality or variations of menu; a unique history has defined each of these different situations, a history which is still largely to be studied. This volume contains contributions from a mix of established food historians and young researchers. Social and economic history overlap with cultural history approaches and forays into the fields of linguistics and art, confirming that the field of food history, and more generally food studies, is by definition a field of transdisciplinary and border research. This volume will be of interest for scholars within the field of food history, food studies, and food culture, as well as social and cultural historians dealing with industrialization or social policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The farmers of Paradise County have been leading a hardscrabble life unchanged for generations. The Communist government has encouraged them to plant garlic, but selling the crop is not as simple as they believed. Warehouses fill up, taxes skyrocket, and government officials maltreat even those who have traveled for days to sell their harvest. A surplus on the garlic market ensues, and the farmers must watch in horror as their crops wither and rot in the fields. Families are destroyed by the random imprisonment of young and old for supposed crimes against the state. The prisoners languish in horrifying conditions in their cells, with only their strength of character and thoughts of their loved ones to save them from madness. Meanwhile, a blind minstrel incites the masses to take the law into their own hands, and a riot of apocalyptic proportions follows with savage and unforgettable consequences. The Garlic Ballads is a powerful vision of life under the heel of an inflexible and uncaring government. It is also a delicate story of love between man and woman, father and child, friend and friend—and the struggle to maintain that love despite overwhelming obstacles.

Book My War My Peace

Download or read book My War My Peace written by Silvana Bastianutti Kukuljan and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My parents were shaped by World War I.I was shaped by World War II.Both my parents were children in 1914, when World War I started. During the four years of the war, both became orphans. They lived lives of extreme poverty and despair. The children ate mostly once a day, and sometimes it was only a piece of bread. They had no warm clothing or shoes, and in winter they suffered frozen fingers and toes. Yet they grew up to become outstanding individuals with dignity, moral values, pride, and principles, which they passed on to my younger brother Diego and me. They raised a family with love and high standards in the midst of another war, World War II. This conflict caused indescribable hardships and horrors, yet my mom and dad remained steadfast throughout their countless obstacles. The nobility of their soul was earned and not inherited.Diego and I never felt despair, even in the darkest moments. We learned that hard work, not necessarily luck, would give us whatever we needed and wanted in life. We were encouraged to get an education because ¿Nobody can take that away from you.¿ We learned that home is where we were safe. We were told that ¿poverty is only temporary and it is not a shameful state.¿ My father always provided for us and was the sunshine and laughter in our family. My mother was his right hand and a strong pillar who gave all of us constant, unwavering direction, and support. During difficult times, I often heard my parents give each other courage and say, ¿This will also pass.¿Now I am a grandmother. I have lived a long and good life and have many memories. Through the years, I heard many oral accounts of my parents¿ lives. In time, their stories became part of my story, and one day my children and grandchildren may appreciate this chronicle.I wish readers to learn what occurs to men, women, and children during wars and how they endure, survive, and start anew.
