Book Building a Global Bank

Download or read book Building a Global Bank written by Mauro F. Guillén and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, Spain's Banco Santander purchased Britain's Abbey National Bank in a deal valued at fifteen billion dollars--an acquisition that made Santander one of the ten largest financial institutions in the world. Here, Mauro Guillén and Adrian Tschoegl tackle the question of how this once-sleepy, family-run provincial bank in a developing economy transformed itself into a financial-services group with more than sixty-six million customers on three continents. Founded 150 years ago in the Spanish port city of the same name, Santander is the only large bank in the world where three successive generations of one family have led top management and the board of directors. But Santander is fully modern. Drawing on rich data and in-depth interviews with family members and managers, Guillén and Tschoegl reveal how strategic decisions by the family and complex political, social, technological, and economic forces drove Santander's unprecedented rise to global prominence. The authors place the bank in this competitive milieu, comparing it with its rivals in Europe and America, and showing how Santander, faced with growing competition in Spain and Europe, sought growth opportunities in Latin America and elsewhere. They also address the complexities of managerial succession and family leadership, and weigh the implications of Santander's stellar rise for the consolidation of European banking. Building a Global Bank tells the fascinating story behind this powerful corporation's remarkable transformation--and of the family behind it.

Book Executive Education after the Pandemic

Download or read book Executive Education after the Pandemic written by Santiago Iñiguez and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business education and executive development has been one of the most fascinating industries in the world and the fastest growing segment of higher education over the past decades. Today, it is experiencing change on a scale unprecedented since the foundation of the first business schools in the early 20th Century, both due to changes in the corporate environment and also due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across all industries. In this context how do you create world-class educational and training institutions that can cope with those challenges, and be rigorous, vocationally relevant and suited to the corporate growing needs in this new fluid world? And how do you combine the very best of traditional academic values with new learning technologies to create an educational model that is fit to compete in the global economy, threatened today by populism, nationalism and economic turmoil? Yet, as daunting as it is, some institutions have already made significant progress in the journey. In this book Santiago Iñiguez de Onzoño, President of IE University, and Peter Lorange, former President of IMD, bring together contributions from leading figures from some of the world’s major universities. They share their experiences in addressing some of the challenges that the industry faces today, such as diversity and inclusion, employability, the role of AI and the advent of innovative new platforms. Packed with case studies of successful initiatives in business education and executive training, this is a truly visionary book. Authors anticipate future trends and share their in-depth knowledge of what it takes to build world-class educational providers – and their vision of higher education in the future.

Book Asian versus Western Management Thinking

Download or read book Asian versus Western Management Thinking written by Kimio Kase and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Navigating paradigm changes is a critical element of business leadership: analog to digital; brand to retailer to consumer; reason to emotion; West to East. Anything that illuminates these powershifts is valuable for the fast-moving decision-maker, and in this respect Asian versus Western Management Thinking is a first-rate inquiry into cultural business behaviors. Insular frameworks of thinking and action matter less by the second. I'm an And/And practitioner and my experience of bridging business between East and West, and vice versa, suggests we need to know the human distinctions that matter and the harmonies that will matter even more. Between the covers of this book by Kimio Kase and colleagues, business moves forward.' Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide, Saatchi & Saatchi, Lovemarks Company 'Having lived and worked my entire life in various countries around the world, I agree with the authors' premise that Asians and Westerners often approach business problems from different angles. Rather than focusing on differences, I welcome the strength that comes from diversity. As my experience at Renault and Nissan has demonstrated, the richest solutions come when ideas are challenged or questioned by people who have a different perspective. This book illustrates the value of accepting diverging ideas as a fact of life that can be used to enhance the world in which we all live and work.' Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Renault-Nissan Alliance 'A most welcome addition to the unbalanced management literature about the 'analytical' West and the 'synthetic' East. For too long the field has been dominated by comparisons of cultural value systems which paradoxically tell us precious little about how habits of mind influence management thinking and practice in different parts of the world over time. At a time when the world's economic centre of gravity is visibly shifting to Asia, this really is a most timely book.' Nigel Holden, Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds, UK

Book Corporate Governance in the Knowledge Economy

Download or read book Corporate Governance in the Knowledge Economy written by Paul David Richard Griffiths and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the transition into the Knowledge Economy, a formidable series of new challenges arise within the corporate governance space. This book tackles the issue of corporate governance along two axes. Firstly, it confronts the developments in corporate governance within the context of the Knowledge Economy and all its implications in relation to the pre-eminence of intangible assets, the advent of technologies such as smartphones and advanced forms of artificial intelligence, and cultural changes associated with the incorporation of Gen Y into the workforce and the proliferation of social networks and effects such as Big Data and cyber-threats. Secondly, it highlights the challenges for multinational organizations and the tension that exists between headquarters and subsidiary offices due to the need to combine the corporation’s ethical culture and corporate governance values with the institutional forces of the subsidiaries’ context. The combination of these two axes addressed viz a viz the relationship between senior management and the rank and file of the organization to create an ethical corporate culture leads to a completely different positioning of corporate governance and make the book truly unique and of interest to researchers, students of corporate finance and corporate governance alongside practitioners within financial organizations and more broadly.

Book Emilio Bot n y el Banco Santander

Download or read book Emilio Bot n y el Banco Santander written by Jaime Velasco Kindelán and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book International Migration in Cuba

Download or read book International Migration in Cuba written by Margarita Cervantes-Rodríguez and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the arrival of the Spanish conquerors at the beginning of the colonial period, Cuba has been hugely influenced by international migration. Between 1791 and 1810, for instance, many French people migrated to Cuba in the wake of the purchase of Louisiana by the United States and turmoil in Saint-Domingue. Between 1847 and 1874, Cuba was the main recipient of Chinese indentured laborers in Latin America. During the nineteenth century as a whole, more Spanish people migrated to Cuba than anywhere else in the Americas, and hundreds of thousands of slaves were taken to the island. The first decades of the twentieth century saw large numbers of immigrants and temporary workers from various societies arrive in Cuba. And since the revolution of 1959, a continuous outflow of Cubans toward many countries has taken place—with lasting consequences. In this book, the most comprehensive study of international migration in Cuba ever undertaken, Margarita Cervantes-Rodríguez aims to elucidate the forces that have shaped international migration and the involvement of the migrants in transnational social fields since the beginning of the colonial period. Drawing on Fernand Braudel’s concept of longue durée, transnational studies, perspectives on power, and other theoretical frameworks, the author places her analysis in a much wider historical and theoretical perspective than has previously been applied to the study of international migration in Cuba, making this a work of substantial interest to social scientists as well as historians.
