Book Portraits of Early Sonoma County Settlers

Download or read book Portraits of Early Sonoma County Settlers written by Sonoma County Genealogical Society and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits of Early Sonoma County Settlers is the narrative history of sixteen early settlers in the area which is now Sonoma County, California. A number of these persons arrived before California became a state in 1850. A number of them were lured here by the Gold Rush of 1849. They engaged in wide and diverse activities. Several were directly or indirectly involved in the settlement and development of new towns in the area. Others contributed to the development of agriculture, schools, and religion. Some of them had to deal with the Mexican Government and the ranchos in early Alta California. Overall it gives a good picture of what the area was like as it moved towards and became a part of the United States of America.

Book Stories in Stone

Download or read book Stories in Stone written by Lynn Margaret Fostine and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The timeline of the graves in the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery date back to 1854. The family plots, mausoleums, headstones and footstones, and Veteran military grave-markers each tell their own unique "story in stone." World history is revealed in the translation of the calligraphy on the 100 Japanese headstones. United States history is written on the dates and regiments on the military veteran grave-markers. California history is told on the early settlers and pioneer graves. The infant children graves are recognizable by the lambs and angels, and their stories are told in number of days alive, not from dying during a pneumonia or small pox epidemic. Some stories are told in marble, others on wooden boards, and the 1906 earthquake disaster story is told on the Memorial Stone with 17 names and four numbers. The "Rural Cemetery Association" also has its own time-line of events, from its first Trustees filing (1873) the "incorporation" papers to 50 years later (1923) the Trustees not filing for renewal of the "incorporation papers." With no one legally responsible, the non-ownership of the Rural Cemetery resulted in neglect and vandalism. Documented with photographs, the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery timeline, gives the meaning of the symbols, shapes, and the epitaphs written on the different headstones. The Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery timeline is a window of insight into Santa Rosa and Sonoma County's past and is a valuable resource for all to enjoy.--Paraphrased from back cover.

Book The Santa Rosa Odd Fellows Cemetery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Santa Rosa Odd Fellows Cemetery is the city's "forgotten cemetery." Between the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery which has become a city park and has a dedicated group of volunteers, and Santa Rosa Memorial Park which is an active, endowed cemetery, Odd Fellows has received little attention. Founded in 1885, the Odd Fellows (IOOF) Cemetery has two sections: the older southeast section is the IOOF Lot Cemetery where "lots" of 12 graves were sold. The newer IOOF Lawn Cemetery is to the northwest and includes the great mausoleum. This book introduces this "forgotten cemetery," provides a selected tour and invites further investigation."--Back cover.
