  • ISBN : 9780300096118
  • Pages : 552 pages

Download or read book Hertfordshire written by Nikolaus Pevsner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although so close to London this is still a rural area, with quiet country churches with fine monuments, timber-framed farmhouses, and some splendid country houses, of which the most celebrated is Cecil's Jacobean Hatfield House. At St Albans the remains of Roman Verulamium and the great early Norman abbey speak eloquently of older civilizations. The towns offer intriguing contrasts: Hertford, Bishop's Stortford and Hitchin still have the character of traditional market centres, while the new towns of Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead and Hatfield are important exemplars of planning ideals of the 1950s and 60s.

Book A Hertfordshire Demesne of Westminster Abbey

Download or read book A Hertfordshire Demesne of Westminster Abbey written by Derek Vincent Stern and published by Univ of Hertfordshire Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering contribution to the economic history of medieval England focuses on the Hertfordshire demesne farm of Kinsbourne (later Herpendenbury) and questions whether the farm's periods of economic success and failure were due to human factors or to the forces of nature. Originally written as a doctoral thesis in 1978, the history has now been edited and published as a memorial to its author who died in 1993. The detailed study is based on the meticulous analysis of numerous primary sources which, the author concludes, suggest that the weather had little impact on the efficiency, or otherwise, of the manor's management, accountancy or exploitation of the market. A lengthy introduction places the work within the context of meteorological debate and regional history.

Book Trout Valley the Hertz Estate and Curtiss Farm

Download or read book Trout Valley the Hertz Estate and Curtiss Farm written by Lisa Damian Kidder and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John D. Hertz, of rental car fame, discovered Trout Valley (then a part of unincorporated McHenry County) in the 1920s. He built a mansion, barns, and polo grounds on the banks of the Fox River, calling his new country estate Leona Farms. Famous landscape architect Jens Jensen designed its scenic landscape, fishing streams, and ponds. Here Hertz raised racehorses, including two Kentucky Derby winners, and hosted Gatsby-like parties for the rich and famous, including Myrna Loy, Will Rogers, and Walt Disney. Eleanor Roosevelt was once a guest too. In 1943, Hertz sold his estate to Otto Schnering, of Baby Ruth and Butterfinger fame, who transformed the grounds from a lush playground to the headquarters of a 10,000-acre farming operation. Old-timers still remember Schnering's six-pony hitch carrying joy-filled passengers down Main Street, the state-of-the-art livestock arena, and the trophy-winning cattle raised at Curtiss Farm.

Book Cape Verde

    Book Details:
  • Author : Murray Stewart
  • Publisher : Bradt Travel Guides
  • Release : 2017-06-05
  • ISBN : 1784770507
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Cape Verde written by Murray Stewart and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new 7th edition of Bradt's Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) has been fully revised and updated and remains the most comprehensive English-language guidebook available to the islands of this alluring Atlantic archipelago, described by some as 'Africa light'. The guide includes well-researched history and cultural sections, with a particularly strong section on music, and brings an honest approach to reporting the fragile balance between tourist development and protecting the environment. This new edition reflects the many changes since the previous one, including the introduction of charter flights from the UK to Sal and the first casino-hotel on Sal, as well as providing full information on how to make the most of the less developed islands away from the main tourist hotspots. Stable and peaceful, quietly isolated by its mid-Atlantic location, Cape Verde continues to grow economically and to develop its tourist infrastructure at a leisurely pace. With few natural resources, the islands are heavily dependent on imports, foreign remittances and still to some extent on foreign aid. The reduction in the latter has heightened the focus on the importance of tourism as an economic driver and visitor numbers continue to rise. Year-round sunshine makes Cape Verde a particularly appealing destination. The archipelago is diverse, particularly in terms of its tourist infrastructure. Sal and Boavista, the oldest of these volcanic islands are flat with white-sand beaches that rival anything in the world. Consequently, they attract 95% of Cape Verde's visitors, leaving the other seven inhabited islands undeveloped. Hikers and those curious to discover something authentic are drawn to them, spending their time walking amongst the jaw-dropping mountainous landscapes of Fogo or Santo Antão, taking some true time-out in tiny Brava or mellow Maio or enjoying the cultural fusion of African, Portuguese and Brazilian influences in the cities of Praia and Mindelo. The adventurous will find adrenalin rushing as they profit from windsurfing and kitesurfing opportunities, fuelled by strong breezes and Atlantic waves, while for culture, Mindelo is the attraction with a constant backdrop of seductive music, the thread which ties together the islands scattered across the mid-Atlantic.
