Book Diana Markosian Santa Barbara

Download or read book Diana Markosian Santa Barbara written by and published by Aperture. This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diana Markosian's Santa Barbara brings together staged scenes, film stills, and family pictures in an innovative and compelling hybrid of personal and documentary storytelling. In 1996, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Markosian's mother, Svetlana, placed a classified ad in a Los Angeles newspaper: "I want to see America, and meet a kind man who can show me the country," she wrote. One man who responded was from Santa Barbara, California, and their correspondence led to Svetlana becoming a mail-order bride, fleeing her increasingly dreary prospects in post-Soviet Moscow with seven-year-old Markosian and her older brother in tow. This book is a retelling of the family's first years in the US, imagined as an episode from the soap opera Santa Barbara--the first American show allowed on Russian television in the 1990s. For many families, including Markosian's, this soap opera symbolized the opportunities of America and the West; for her project, Markosian wrote a script in collaboration with one of the original Santa Barbara writers and hired actors to reenact moments from her personal history. A major exhibition of this work, including a three-channel film presentation, will open at Rencontres d'Arles in July 2020, in advance of a fall 2020 exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Book excerpt: Before 1973, the Loud family of Santa Barbara, California, lived in the privacy of their own home. With the airing of the documentary An American Family, that "privacy" extended to every American home with a television. This book is the first to offer a close look at An American Family -- the documentary that blurred conventions, stirred passions, revised impressions of family life and definitions of private and public, and began the breakdown of distinctions between reality and spectacle that culminated in cultural phenomena from The Oprah Winfrey Show to Survivor.

Book Discorrelated Images

Download or read book Discorrelated Images written by Shane Denson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Discorrelated Images Shane Denson examines how computer-generated digital images displace and transform the traditional spatial and temporal relationships that viewers had with conventional analog forms of cinema. Denson analyzes works ranging from the Transformers series and Blade Runner 2049 to videogames and multimedia installations to show how what he calls discorrelated images—images that do not correlate with the abilities and limits of human perception—produce new subjectivities, affects, and potentials for perception and action. Denson's theorization suggests that new media theory and its focus on technological development must now be inseparable from film and cinema theory. There's more at stake in understanding discorrelated images, Denson contends, than just a reshaping of cinema, the development of new technical imaging processes, and the evolution of film and media studies: discorrelated images herald a transformation of subjectivity itself and are essential to our ability to comprehend nonhuman agency.

  • Author : James T. Hamilton

Download or read book Channeling Violence written by James T. Hamilton and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If it bleeds, it leads." The phrase captures television news directors' famed preference for opening newscasts with the most violent stories they can find. And what is true for news is often true for entertainment programming, where violence is used as a product to attract both viewers and sponsors. In this book, James Hamilton presents the first major theoretical and empirical examination of the market for television violence. Hamilton approaches television violence in the same way that other economists approach the problem of pollution: that is, as an example of market failure. He argues that television violence, like pollution, generates negative externalities, defined as costs borne by others than those involved in the production activity. Broadcasters seeking to attract viewers may not fully bear the costs to society of their violent programming, if those costs include such factors as increased levels of aggression and crime in society. Hamilton goes on to say that the comparison to pollution remains relevant when considering how to deal with the problem. Approaches devised to control violent programming, such as restricting it to certain times and rating programs according to the violence they contain, have parallels in zoning and education policies designed to protect the environment. Hamilton examines in detail the microstructure of incentives that operate at every level of television broadcasting, from programming and advertising to viewer behavior, so that remedies can be devised to reduce violent programming without restricting broadcasters' right to compete.
