Book Stone Architecture in Santa Barbara

Download or read book Stone Architecture in Santa Barbara written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building with stone requires a commitment to permanence, like the extraordinary, almost citywide conviction of builders in Santa Barbara from the 1870s through the 1930s. As Santa Barbara was evolving from a dusty little port and outlying resort into a vibrant and growing city, there occurred an extraordinary era of stone construction. This was made possible by a fortuitous conjunction of factors: abundant material, a cadre of expert artisans, and almost unlimited financing. This period provided an atmosphere not only conducive to the building of public spaces, homes, bridges, walls, and an assortment of other stonework, but encouraged some exceptional expressions of the stoneworkers' art. Many of these artistic fabrications remain a testimony to the skills and tastes of their creators and add a distinctive element to the particular ambiance that makes Santa Barbara the special place that it is.

Download or read book A Naturalist s Guide to the Santa Barbara Region written by Joan Easton Lentz and published by Heyday Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and deeply felt guide to one of the world's most beautiful and varied regions. Santa Barbara and the neighboring counties of San Luis Obispo and Ventura comprise a transitional zone where the plants and animals of Northern California mix with those of the south, creating diverse and dynamic habitats. Lucid explications of the geological and ecological forces that continue to shape and reshape the area are interspersed with personal accounts, as the author delights in the salty breath of a two-hundred-ton whale near the Channel Islands, the antics of beach hoppers along the shoreline, the explosion of wildflowers on the Carrizo Plain, memories of exploring the chaparral with her father, excursions into oak woodlands, and hikes to lofty peaks and canyons cloaked with pinyon pine and juniper. Enhanced with ample, specially commissioned photographs, maps, and charts, this book will broaden our understanding and deepen our enjoyment of a unique and constantly surprising region."--Back cover.

Book The Early Days of Santa Barbara California

Download or read book The Early Days of Santa Barbara California written by Walter A. Hawley and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Santa Barbara, California: From the First Discoveries by Europeans to December, 1846 In disregard of the historic value of the old buildings of the Mission, Presidio, and Pueblo of Santa Barbara - precious monuments sacred to the memory of men who will be remembered for generations to come - tiled roofs have been destroyed, walls allowed to crumble, and foundations effaced. Already some of the most interesting buildings have gone. Even their former locations are known to few. Fifteen years ago, realizing how rapidly the old landmarks were dissappearing, the writer with the assistance of an engineer made surveys both at the Mission and at the presidio of all the buildings then standing, and also of all the ruins and traces of foundations of former buildings. These surveys were then carefully platted. This work was done on account of a personal interest in the subject, and with the view of placing the data, thus obtained, at the disposal of any one competent and willing to write the history of the early days of Santa Barbara. But the subject has awakened but little interest in the historian; and as some of the ruins that were then surveyed have since disappeared, the writer now offers this little sketch, accompanied by plans of the Mission and presidio, made from the original surveys, in the hope that it will create a greater interest in the lives and works of the founders of this beautiful city.
