Book excerpt: Les étudiants en médecine, exposés à un environnement de travail épuisant, constituent une population à risque de développer des troubles psychiatriques. En 2017, une enquête nationale a montré que sur les 22 000 étudiants en médecine interrogés, 68,2% présentaient une anxiété (contre 26,2% en population générale), 27,7% avaient des symptômes dépressifs et 23,7% avaient des idées suicidaires (contre 4% des femmes et 3% des hommes du même âge dans la population générale) dont 5% avaient des idées suicidaires dans le mois précédent. Il est donc nécessaire de prévenir les problèmes de santé mentale ultérieurs en agissant sur la prévention des troubles psychiques des étudiants. L'étude Must Prevent est une étude multicentrique, randomisée, contrôlée, à deux bras parallèles, en simple aveugle dont l'objectif principal est d'évaluer l'efficacité à un an de la méditation pleine conscience versus la relaxation afin de prévenir le burnout chez les étudiants en médecine de quatrième et cinquième années. Cette étude a débuté en septembre 2019 et se poursuit après la réalisation de cette thèse. Les données post intervention ne peuvent donc être exploitées dans cette thèse compte tenu de la levée du simple aveugle. Ce travail de thèse décrit une étude transversale descriptive des 35 étudiants marseillais inclus dans l'étude Must Prevent. La visite d'inclusion comportait un entretien clinique associé à des auto et hétéro questionnaires pour évaluer la santé mentale des étudiants (MINI, MADRS, CSSRS, test de Fagerstrom, AUDIT, DAST, CAST, HADS, Perceived Stress Scale, Jefferson Scale of Empathy, WHOQOL et l'échelle visuelle analogique de la douleur psychologique et des idéations suicidaires). Dans cette étude, nous avons constaté que 20% des étudiants avaient des symptômes dépressifs, plus du tiers ont eu des idées suicidaires dont 6% dans le dernier mois, un tiers des étudiants présentent un burnout et plus du tiers des étudiants ont un mésusage vis à vis de l'alcool. Notre étude a permis de montrer qu'il existe une réelle souffrance dans cette population et il est donc nécessaire de leur proposer une prise en charge adaptée.

This tradition of scapegoating stretches back to the nation’s founding and forms part of a contest over the legitimacy of the religion, both beyond and within Haiti’s borders. The Spirits and the Law examines that vexed history, asking why, from 1835 to 1987, Haiti banned many popular ritual practices. To find out, Kate Ramsey begins with the Haitian Revolution and its aftermath. Fearful of an independent black nation inspiring similar revolts, the United States, France, and the rest of Europe ostracized Haiti. Successive Haitian governments, seeking to counter the image of Haiti as primitive as well as contain popular organization and leadership, outlawed “spells” and, later, “superstitious practices.” While not often strictly enforced, these laws were at times the basis for attacks on Vodou by the Haitian state, the Catholic Church, and occupying U.S. forces. Beyond such offensives, Ramsey argues that in prohibiting practices considered essential for maintaining relations with the spirits, anti-Vodou laws reinforced the political marginalization, social stigmatization, and economic exploitation of the Haitian majority. At the same time, she examines the ways communities across Haiti evaded, subverted, redirected, and shaped enforcement of the laws. Analyzing the long genealogy of anti-Vodou rhetoric, Ramsey thoroughly dissects claims that the religion has impeded Haiti’s development.
