The recent increase in the number of public and private global health actors and the complex global governance for health boosted the need for professionals who combine a thorough understanding of health-related challenges with multidisciplinary training in social sciences, economics, and management. In the past few years, this has led, not only to the mushrooming of courses dedicated to global health, but also academic degrees in global health. By reviewing a recent attempt to innovate the educational offerings in global health policy and management by a consortium of academic institutions in Italy, the book analyzes the recent trends in global health education. The book concludes that while global health and development is certainly an emerging area in the higher education systems of many countries, international offerings in graduate programs are still highly dominated by those taught in medical schools, often failing to combine health sciences with economic, social, and management sciences. The multidisciplinary nature of global health education programs should be improved.

In the context of today’s development scheme for Africa, ownership is often considered to be the panacea for all of the aid-dependent continent’s development woes. Reinforced through the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness and the Accra Agenda for Action, ownership is now the preeminent procedure for achieving aid effectiveness and a range of development outcomes. Throughout this book, the author illustrates how the ownership paradigm dictates who can produce development knowledge and who is responsible for carrying it out, with a specific focus on the health sectors in Burkina Faso and Kenya. Under this paradigm, despite the ownership narrative, national stakeholders in both countries are not producers of development knowledge; they are merely responsible for its implementation. This book challenges the preponderance of conventional international development policies that call for more ownership from African stakeholders without questioning the implications of donor demands and historical legacies of colonialism in Africa. Et trop souvent, ces lacunes sont cachees - par consequent, pour faire face a la crise de l'apprentissage, il est crucial de commencer par la mettre en lumiere en ameliorant l'evaluation des acquis des eleves.Comment mettre l'ecole au service de l'ensemble des apprenants ? Les travaux de recherche sur le cerveau, l'innovation pedagogique et la gestion des etablissements scolaires, entre autres, ont identifie des interventions qui favorisent l'apprentissage en faisant en sorte que les apprenants soient mieux prepares, que les enseignants soient a la fois competents et motives, et que d'autres moyens soient mis en oeuvre pour soutenir larelation entre l'enseignant et l'apprenant.Comment faire en sorte que le systeme favorise l'apprentissage ? Pour realiser les objectifs d'apprentissage a travers le systeme educatif dans son ensemble, il ne suffit pas de transposer a plus grande echelle les interventions efficaces. Les pays doivent aussi surmonter des obstacles techniques et politiques en ayant recours a des outils de mesure et indicateurs suffisamment parlants pour mobiliser les acteurs concernes etsuivre les progres, en formant des coalitions au service de l'apprentissage et en adoptant une approche de reforme evolutive.

The explosion of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the persistence of malaria as a major killer, and the resurgence of diseases like tuberculosis which were previously under control, have brought about changes in the health system, with implications for its governance, especially in view of the diminished capacity of the public health facilities to cope with a complex range of expanded needs. Government responsibilities and objectives in the health sector have been redefined, with private sector entities (both for profit and not-for profit) playing an increasingly visible role in health care provisions. The reasons for collaborative patterns vary, but chronic under-funding of publicly financed health services is often an important factor. Processes of decentralisation and health sector reforms have had mixed effects on health care system performance; while private health insurance markets and private clinics are pointers to a growing stratification of the health market, in line with the intensified income and social differentiation that has occurred over the last two decades.These developments call for health sector reforms.

Ces investissements auraient toutefois des retornbees substantielles : 65 millions de cas de retard de croissance et 265 millions de cas danemie chez la femme auraient ete evites en 2025 comparati vement a I' annee de reference 2015. En outre, sur 10 ans, au moins 91 millions d' enfants supplementaires auraient ete traites pour emaciation severe et 105 millions de nourrissons additionnels auraient ete beneficiaires d'un allaitement matemel exclusif au cours de leurs premiers six mois de vie. L'atteintede l'ensemble de ces cibles permettrait d'eviter au moins 3,7 millions de mortalites infantiles. Chaque dollar investi dans ce paquet d'interventions genererait des rendements econorniques de4 a 35 dollars, ce qui fait du financement de la nutrition precoce l'une des interventions de developpement les plus rentables. Certaines des cibles - particulierement celles qui sont axees sur la reduction du retard de croissance chez l'enfant et de I'anemie chez la femmeparaissent ambitieuses et demanderont des efforts concertes de financement, de mise a l' echelle et d' engagement continu; toutefois, l' experience tiree de plusieurs pays indique que leur atteinte reste possible. Les investissements au cours des 1000 premiers jours decisifs de la petite enfance sont inalienables, transportables et porteurs de retombees tout au long de la vie - non seulement pour les enfants directement concernes, mais aussi pour nous tous - sous forme de societes plus robustes, qui agissent comme moteur des economies a venir.

Despite scholarship on the importance of social connections to facilitate feelings of belonging and settlement, lack of consensus around what integration means has led to bustling critique of the notion as prescribing processes through which migrant others must work their way into acceptance in the body social. Moreover, scholars recognise that discourses and practices of integration are often used as means to justify accompanying policies of disintegration and exclusion. Put differently, there is a humanitarian hand that cares and a hand that strikes. Frameworks for understanding migration and integration traverse the realms of theory, policy and practice, and are usually intertwined with discourses and regimes of care and connectedness. This Research Topic aims to further unsettle debates around integration and care through an engagement with the value commitments that underlie integration projects and that drive everyday practice and service provision, drawing upon perspectives beyond the global north.

If so, what are the limits, if any, to such regulatory powers? As a wide variety of state regulations allegedly aimed at protecting public health may interfere with foreign investments, a tension exists between the public health policies of the host state and investment treaty provisions. Under most investment treaties, States have waived their sovereign immunity, and have agreed to give arbitrators a comprehensive jurisdiction over what are essentially regulatory disputes. Some scholars and practitioners have expressed concern regarding the magnitude of decision-making power allocated to investment treaty tribunals. This book contributes to the current understanding of international investment law and arbitration, addressing the fundamental question of whether public health has and/or should have any relevance in contemporary international investment law and policy. With a focus on the ‘clash of cultures’ between international investment law and public health, the author critically analyses the emerging case law of investment treaty arbitration and considers the theoretical interplay between public health and investor rights in international investment law. The book also explores the interplay between investment law and public health in practice, focusing on specific sectors such as pharmaceutical patents, tobacco regulation and environmental health.
