Spanning global literature from the beginnings of recorded history to the present day, this expansive four-volume set examines the many varieties of the world’s literatures in their social and intellectual contexts. Its four volumes are devoted to literature before 200 CE, from 200 to 1500, from 1500 to 1800, and from 1800 to 2000, with four dozen contributors providing new insights into the art of literature, and addressing the situation of literature in the world today. Organized throughout in six broad regions—Africa, the Americas, East Asia, Europe, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, and West and Central Asia—Literature: A World History offers readers a clear and consistent treatment of diverse forms of literary expression across time and place. Throughout the text, particular emphasis is placed on literary institutions within different regional and linguistic cultures and on the relations between literature and a spectrum of social, political, and religious contexts. Download or read book A History of Hindi Literature written by K. B. Jindal and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The ballads of Rajput prowess, the aphorisms of Kabir, Tulsidas, Ramayana, the bhajans of Sur and Mira, the poetical rhetoric of Kesava, the closed-packed epigrams of Behari, the lyrics of mystics Prasada, Pant and Mahadevi make Hindi literature an 'enchanted garden'. The present work seeks to give a glimpse of that 'enchanted garden' to those whose mother-tongue is not Hindi. At the end there is an anthology of Hindi verse containing best pieces of the 'nine gems' of mediaeval Hindi. A glance through the anthology may enduce the reader to read the full text in the original. From the Chhandas of the Vedas to the Khadi Boli of the present day is a long span of five thousand years. From Chhandas to Sanskrit, from Sanskrit to Prakrit, from Prakrit to Apabhramsa, from Apabhramsa to local dialects Dingal, Pingal, Avadhi, Brajbhasa, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Bundeli, Dakhani, and finally a wrench from the past and the birth of a new language, the Khadi Boli of today-is a phenomenon unparalleled in the history of any language.

Download or read book English Pali Dictionary written by Ambalaṅgoḍa Polvattē Buddhadatta and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a reprint of the English-Pali Dictionary by A.P. Buddhadatta Mahathera published long ago by the Pali Text Society in Roman script. This publication was then considered a notable event in the life of the Society for it was a great improvement on a similar earlier work by Venerable W. Piyatissa whose usefulness was reduced for the English-speaking readers by the Pali words being given in Sinhalese script. This is a consider ably enlarged form of a concise English-Pali Dictionary compiled by the present author during the second World War. The author has coined many new words and has given more than one Pali word for some English verbs which do not exist in the ancient languages like Pali. This dictionary, though not an exhaustive one, has proved much useful to the scholars of the Pali language as it presents well chosen material in a single volume of a manageable size. (by the same author) CONCISE PALI-ENGLISH DICTIONARY - This Concise Pali-English Dictionary has been prepared mainly for use by students in schools and colleges. The author is not only an eminent Elder of the Buddhist Order but one of the leading Pali scholars recognized both in the East and West as an authority on the subject. It is to be observed that the author has kept more or less to the traditional sense of words while not altogether ignoring the meanings given by western scholars in their translations and lexicons. Many errors in the latter sources have also been rectified. But the basic sense adopted is in nearly every instance the traditionally accepted meaning in accord with the commentaries and the glossaries. This perhaps is of special value to beginners as thereby they get introduced to the indigenous tradition, thus providing a useful basis on which to build up a more scientific knowledge as the study advances.
Download or read book Tagore s Chitra and Aurobindo s Savitri written by Ketki N. Pandya and published by Atlantic Publishers & Dist. This book was released on 2004 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabindranath Tagore S Drama Chitra Is Aimed At Reminding Man That The Ultimate Truth Is To Be Found Not At The Physical Level But In The Steady Evolution Of The Self. The Illumination Of A Young Princess Mind Lies In The Recognition And Realization That It Is In Truth Alone That True Happiness Resides. Similarly Aurobindo S Epic Savitri Seeks To Narrate The Story Of A Young Princess Who Saves The Life Of Her Husband From Death To Suggest The Ultimate Liberation Of Man From Universal Death. Chitra And Savitri Are Upanishadic Works In The Sense That Their Principal Theme Is The Search For Vidya (Knowledge) That Liberates Man From Avidya (Ignorance), And That Their Main Stylistic Device Is The Conversation Between The Human And Divine Characters. Evolution Thus Becomes The Watchword Of Both Aurobindo And Tagore. The Awakening Of The Self Or Raising The Life And Existence To A Higher Level Of Consciousness Is One Of The Parallel Themes Observed In Chitra And Savitri. Further, The Integral Transformation Of Chitra And Savitri And Their Inner Intuitive Development Has A Much Wider Connotation To Mankind At Large. Chitra And Savitri Are Thus Established As Works Of Self-Discovery. Although There Are Fundamental Differences In Terms Of The Nature Of Chitra And Savitri S Awareness, There Is No Denying The Fact That These Legends From The Mahabharata Are Exquisite Examples Of The Female Aspect Of The Indian Women.

These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A History of Sanskrit Literature: Look inside the book: After Alexander's invasion, the Greeks became to some extent acquainted with the learning of the Indians; the Arabs, in the Middle Ages, introduced the knowledge of Indian science to the West; a few European missionaries, from the sixteenth century onwards, were not only aware of the existence of, but also acquired some familiarity with, the ancient language of India; and Abraham Roger even translated the Sanskrit poet Bhart?ihari into Dutch as early as 1651. ...Considering that the affinity of the oldest form of the Avestan language with the dialect of the Vedas is already so great that, by the mere application of phonetic laws, whole Avestan stanzas may be translated word for word into Vedic, so as to produce verses correct not only in form but in poetic spirit; considering further, that if we knew the Avestan language at as early a stage as we know the Vedic, the former would necessarily be almost identical with the latter, it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that the Indian branch must have separated from the Iranian only a very short time before the beginnings of Vedic literature, and can therefore have hardly entered the North-West of India even as early as 1500 B.C.
