Book Sans Famille Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sans Famille Classic Reprint written by Hector Malot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sans Famille IT has been the aim in these selections from Sam Famille to give the story in as complete and consecutive a form as possible, presenting what, to the editor, has seemed to be the most valuable and characteristic in this work of Malot, and at the same time the most interesting from the narrative standpoint; for this reason almost all long descriptions have been omitted and chapters that do not directly bear on the immediate advancement of the story, such as Remi's stay at the gardener's and his experiences at the mining town. A straightforward, uninterrupted narration has been the principal aim; a text in which ample opportunity is given for conversation in the classroom; notes which do not translate (the selections being especially light and easy), but which may serve to point out illustra tions of the principal rules of grammar which a first year student is likely to compass, or a second-year student needs to review. It seems that this story has never been given its proper place in the evolution or development of French literature in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nobody's Boy: Sans Famille Was a foundling. But until I was eight years of age I thought I had a mother like other children, for when I cried a woman held me tightly in her arms and rocked me gently until my tears stopped falling. I never got into bed without her coming to kiss me, and when the December winds blew the icy snow against the window panes, she would take my feet between her hands and warm them, while she sang to me. Even now I can re member the song she used to sing. If a storm came on while I was out minding our. Cow, she would run down the lane to meet me, and cover my head and shoulders with her cotton skirt so that I Should not get wet. When I had a quarrel with one of the village boys she made me tell her all about it, and she would talk kindly to me when I was wrong and praise me when I was in the right. By these and many other things, by the way she spoke to me and looked at me, and the gentle way she scolded me, I believed that she was my mother. My village, or, to be more exact, the village where I was brought up, for I did not have a vil lage of my own, no birthplace, any more than I had a father or mother the village where I spent my childhood was called Chavanon; it is one of the poorest in France. Only sections of the land could be cultivated, for the great stretch Of moors was covered with heather and broom. We lived in a little house down by the brook. Until I was eight years of age I had never seen a man in our house; yet my adopted mother was 'not a widow, but her husband, who was a stone cutter, worked in Paris, and he had not been back to the village since I was of an age to notice what was going on around me. Occasionally he sent news by some companion who returned to the vil lage, for there were many of the peasants who were employed as stone-cutters in the city. Book Nobody s Girl En Famille Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nobody s Girl En Famille Classic Reprint written by Hector Malot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nobody's Girl (En Famille) Nobody's Girl is not a human document, such as is Nobody's Boy, because it has more story plot, and the adventure is in a more restricted field, but it discloses no less the nobility of a right-minded child, and how loyalty wins the way to noble deeds and life. This is another beautiful literary creation of Hector Malot which every one can recommend as an ennobling book, of interest not only to childhood, page by page to the thrilling conclusion, but to every person who loves romance and character. Only details, irrelevant for readers in America, have been eliminated. Little Perrine's loyal ideals, with their inspiring sentiments, are preserved by her through the most discouraging conditions, and are described with the simplicity for which Hector Malot is famous. The building up of a little girl's life is made a fine example for every child. Every, reader of this story leaves it inspired for the better way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Dramas (Drames De Famille) I have said that Corbieres was my schoolmate. We had known each other at the lycee louis-le-grand, when we were both day-scholars; but our acquaintance was nothing more than a reason for tutoz'ement. We had heard the same lecturers, learned the same lessons, put the same material into Latin verse, for a number of years, without having spoken to each other, except to say good morning, and good night. We made the discovery of each other, as schoolmates often do, after we were out of school, and after having entered upon paths which were widely dissimilar. But we both brought to our respective pursuits in themselves so different that one might say they were diametrically opposite that same anxiety as to the problems of our time, that same need of harmonizing intellectual determinism with civic action which seems to me the peculiar characteristic of our generation. It was in the spring of 1873 that this renewal of acquaintance took place, as the result of a meeting that can hardly be attributed to anything but chance. Its least details are present to my mind with extreme precision. I was coming out of a cafe, now destroyed, which once occupied the corner of the rue de Vaugirard, opposite the Luxembourg and the Odeon. Book excerpt: Nobody's Girl (En Famille): Large print by Hector Malot She looked around and saw a long, low building, which might have been a house, but which might serve for anything else. The walls were made of bits of stone, wood and plaster. Even tin boxes were used in its construction. The roof was made of tarred canvas and cardboard, and most of the window panes were of paper, although in one or two instances there was some glass. The man who designed it was another Robinson Crusoe, and his workman a man Friday. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sarah's Choice, or the Norton Family At the time my story opens, I was much younger than I now am. My mother's health, never very strong, was feeble. We had exchanged places. Ihad assumed the role of protector and advisor, but alas! I had no good orthodox religion to intrude upon her. Mine was of that uncertain character that sees possible salvation for every one, and I wanted sunshine, not shadow, and laughter instead of tears. My mother took it as an additional cross that I should turn out to have such a worldly bent of mind, notwithstanding all the pious precepts I had been brought up on, and she spent even more of her time. In tears and prayers over me than she did in my wretched childhood. And yet, all things considered, we got along very well together in those last years of her life. Poor mother! My heart bleeds for you when I think 'of you now, for I see through older eyes, and can realize how hard it must have been for you to believe your only child all wrong.
