Download or read book The Next Mormons written by Jana Riess and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Millennials--the generation born in the 1980s and 1990s--have been leaving organized religion in unprecedented numbers. For a long time, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was an exception: nearly three-quarters of people who grew up Mormon stayed that way into adulthood. In The Next Mormons, Jana Riess demonstrates that things are starting to change. Drawing on a large-scale national study of four generations of current and former Mormons as well as dozens of in-depth personal interviews, Riess explores the religious beliefs and behaviors of young adult Mormons, finding that while their levels of belief remain strong, their institutional loyalties are less certain than their parents' and grandparents'. For a growing number of Millennials, the tensions between the Church's conservative ideals and their generation's commitment to individualism and pluralism prove too high, causing them to leave the faith-often experiencing deep personal anguish in the process. Those who remain within the fold are attempting to carefully balance the Church's strong emphasis on the traditional family with their generation's more inclusive definition that celebrates same-sex couples and women's equality. Mormon families are changing too. More Mormons are remaining single, parents are having fewer children, and more women are working outside the home than a generation ago. The Next Mormons offers a portrait of a generation navigating between traditional religion and a rapidly changing culture.

Book Geology of Millard County Utah

Download or read book Geology of Millard County Utah written by Lehi F. Hintze and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin serves not only to introduce the non-geologist to the rich geology of Millard County, but also to provide professional geologists with technical information on the stratigraphy, paleontology, and structural geology of the county. Millard County is unique among Utah’s counties in that it contains an exceptionally complete billion-year geologic record. This happened because until about 200 million years ago the area of present-day Millard County lay near sea level and was awash in shallow marine waters on a continental shelf upon which a stack of fossil-bearing strata more than 6 miles (10 km) thick slowly accumulated. This bulletin summarizes what is known about these strata, as well as younger rocks and surficial deposits in the county, and provides references to scientific papers that describe them in greater detail. Mountains North 30 x 60 (1:100,000-scale) quadrangles. These companion maps and this bulletin portray the geology of Millard County more completely and accurately than any previously published work.

Book Family Maps of Sanpete County Utah Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Family Maps of Sanpete County Utah Deluxe Edition written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 446 pages with 144 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Sanpete County, Utah, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 3994 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 20 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Book History of Sanpete and Emery Counties Utah

Download or read book History of Sanpete and Emery Counties Utah written by W. H. Lever and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Sanpete and Emery Counties, Utah: With Sketches of Cities, Towns and Villages, Chronology of Important Events, Records of Indian Wars, Portraits of Prominent Persons, and Biographies of Representative Citizens Almost half a century has elapsed since the bold pioneers entered Sanpete Valley to make homes amidst the savage Indians and barren deserts of sagebrush. The veterans of '49 have nearly all disappeared from the valleys where they chased the redmen, erected homes and conquered the arid lands, converting Sanpete into a veritable agricultural paradise. Many of the sons and daughters have crossed the mountains in quest of new vales to conquer, and it is fitting that at this time a comprehensive history should be compiled. The book here presented will be preserved as one of the most valuable family treasures, beneficial for its pages of history, genealogy, biography, commercial and educational records and the familiar features of representative citizens. The publisher has labored at great disadvantage in compiling this book, because such a work has never been issued and data could not easily be collected. There may be some errors in dates and omissions of events of minor importance, as is always the case in the first issue of such a volume, but the most searching efforts have been made to have it a reliable and comprehensive work.
