Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) has shown remarkable progress by consistently building itself into a market-oriented economy, with economic growth in 1986-2016 averaging around 6.5% per annum. The rapid and sustained growth brought about changes in the structure of output, but did not alter job composition: resource-based products still dominate in industry, low value-added jobs in services, and 65% of the labor force in agriculture. This country diagnostic study provides comprehensive analysis and identifies promising new drivers of growth which the Lao PDR can develop to diversify its production structure and speed up structural transformation.

Download or read book Ending Asian Deprivations written by Shiladitya Chatterjee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite Asia’s rapid growth, vast sections of its population still live in poverty and suffer hunger and other forms of deprivation. Merely relying on Asia’s growth will not help the deprived see a better future in their lifetimes. Ways must be found to make growth more inclusive combined with proactive public action to bring substantial improvements in the lives of Asia’s deprived people. This book is written by a set of experts who have been working long on reducing various aspects of human deprivations in Asia. It begins with a discussion of the massive dimensions of deprivations that continue to exist in Asia. Although many countries have adopted inclusive growth strategies to enable the benefits of growth to reach the poor, much more needs to be done to make growth processes more broad based and beneficial to all. The book points to essential action needed to bring this about. The book also emphasizes the crucial role of determined, target driven public action if Asia’s deprived populations are to see substantial improvement in their lives. Practical measures to tackle problems of hunger, unemployment, gender discrimination, ill health, lack of quality basic education, inadequate access to clean water and basic sanitation are each discussed. The problems of the urban poor and migrants who continue to flock to Asia’s cities are also highlighted. The book also emphasizes the need for an appropriate environment for public action to succeed including strong participatory institutions, effective governance, social protection and regional cooperation.

Download or read book From reacting to preventing pandemics written by World Bank and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investing in One Health – cross-sectoral, multidisciplinary coordination and collaboration across the human health, animal health, and environmental health sectors – is crucial for maintaining healthy agricultural and food systems and addressing global health security risks. Such action can reduce the threat of future pandemics through upstream preventive actions, early detection, and agile responses to zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases outbreaks, coupled with measures for promoting food safety, including anti-microbial resistance. This regional review, conducted jointly by the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, assesses the socioeconomic impacts of zoonotic diseases and epidemics across the East Asia and Pacific region, providing a background on why emerging infectious diseases are occurring more frequently in this region. This review looks at the benefits of using a risk-based approach, assesses the management of animal and wildlife health and the ability to identify and respond to emerging threats and protect the health, agricultural production, and ecosystem services. It provides recommendations on priority activities to be undertaken, and offers governments and their development partners the evidence and analysis needed to make more and better investments in wildlife systems and animal health to improve global health security.
Download or read book Evaluation of FAO USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats Programme Phase II EPT 2 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been involved in the Emerging Pandemic Threats Programme (EPT-2), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) since 2014. The programme sets out to minimize the impact of existing global pandemic threats and to detect, respond to and improve the prevention of emerging threats. Implementation of this programme at FAO has been carried out through 20 projects with efforts concentrated in 36 countries in Africa and Asia. It builds upon lessons learned in the first phase of the programme, in which FAO was involved in improving livestock disease surveillance, enhancing capacity of veterinary epidemiologists and laboratories and improving response to the avian influenza. EPT-2 focuses more in-depth on preventative measures to zoonotic novel pathogens thereby reducing the risk of emergence of such diseases. This evaluation aims to trace the contribution of FAO’s interventions to the programme and assess its outcomes at the global, regional, and national levels. EPT-2 has largely achieved its objectives and outputs in terms of technical capacity development and disease strategy, but less so in terms of enabling policy, value chains, and production. In line with FAO’s 2011 One Health Action Plan (FAO, 2011), EPT-2’s technical focus has strengthened traditional partnerships between FAO and technical livestock departments and ministries and built stronger collaborations with health and environment ministries. The next phase of the EPT-2 programme could take advantage of renewed national, regional, and global interest in ensuring that the COVID-19 experience is not repeated. FAO needs to fully utilize its convening power, partnerships, trusted status, and experience of emerging pandemic threats to engage political and business leaders on the need to consolidate and scale up EPT-2-induced gains to improve pandemic preparedness.
