Sanitary engineering - 1ike electrical engineering - is one of the recent branches of civil engineering; sanitary science, the researches of which form its foundations, is a new science, which has, in the past few years, made such rapid strides that its importance is beginning to be more universally recognized. The general public has but a vague idea of the meaning of the term sanitary engineering. Many mistaken or narrow views exist in regard thereto, and it is with a view of dispelling these that this book is published. Book Sanitary Fittings and Plumbing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sanitary Fittings and Plumbing Classic Reprint written by George Lister Sutcliffe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitary Fittings and Plumbing During the last quarter of a century, so many books have been written on the sanitation of build ings that there would be little need for another work on any part of the subject, were it not that sanitary science is still rapidly progressing. New discoveries and inventions are continually pressing for notice, and old problems are being solved in new ways. In this book an attempt has been made to enunciate the general principles now governing the design of sanitary work in buildings, and also to describe and illustrate the most important modern sanitary fittings and the plumber's work in connection with them. No claim is made that the book is exhaustive, but the author ventures to hope that it will prove sufficiently thorough to be of use to the young architect, sanitary engineer, and plumber, and that it may also serve as a guide to the householder in the choice of fittings, and enable him to distinguish good work from bad. The greater part of the book appeared as a series of articles in T/ze Builder during the first half of this year, but fresh matter has been added to render the work more complete. Book Sanitary Engineering with Respect to Water Supply and Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sanitary Engineering with Respect to Water Supply and Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint written by Leveson Francis Vernon-Harcourt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitary Engineering With Respect to Water-Supply and Sewage Disposal The correct form for masonry reservoir -dams exposed to a consider able water-pressure was determined, about the middle of last century, by careful mathematical calculations, carried out by a French engineer, in accordance with which the F urens darn was erected in 1861 - 1866, as mentioned on page 142, and has proved perfectly stable, and since which time several other high masonry dams have been constructed on similar lines, with equally satisfactory results; whereas, according to the conclusions drawn from the above experiments, those dams are unstable, are exposed to tensional strains reaching between 5 and to tons per square foot, and are subjected to shearing stresses far in excess of anything imagined. Turning now to the failure of masonry dams, the Austin dam in Texas, shown in section on page 146, should, according to the above theory, have failed by an opening at its toe under vertical tensional strains, and then have turned over; whereas, on the contrary, the darn was pushed bodily downstream in an upright posi tion by the horizontal water-pressure. The Bouzey dam also, in the first instance, and the gros-bois darn were pushed slightly forward by the water-pressure. Dock walls, moreover, do not fail by vertical dislocations in front, or by overturning if the toe rests on a solid foundation but they are pushed forward in an upright position by the pressure at the back. Unless any new theory, with regard to the stresses on masonry dams and their stability, can be proved to be more in accordance with the actual results of experience, especially in the case of failures, than the theory on which the designs of the principal masonry dams have been based during the last forty years, and have successfully borne the test in actual practice, the new theory cannot reasonably be accepted in preference to the old one; and whenever a theory, however authoritatively advanced, is evidently at variance with actual occurrences, it may safely be disregarded. Book The Sanitary Condition of City and Country

Download or read book The Sanitary Condition of City and Country written by George E. Waring and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanitary Condition of City and Country: Dwelling Houses The first edition of this booklet consisted mainly of a reproduction of two papers read before the American Public Health Association and the Public Health Association of New York, in 1876. These papers have been re-written, in the light of the advances made in the practice of House Drainage since that date, but their form has not been changed materially. The paper on Country Houses led to a lengthy correspondence in the American Architect and Building News. This correspondence was reproduced, originally, as affording the best presentation of my own views on the subject, and as meeting objections which were likely to arise in the minds of those who had given it only casual attention. Book Conservation by Sanitation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conservation by Sanitation: Air and Water Supply; Disposal of Waste (Including a Laboratory Guide for Sanitary Engineers) The sanitary engineer has a treble duty for the next few years of civic awakening. Having the knowledge, he must be a leader in developing works and plants for state and municipal improve ment, at the same time he is an expert in their employ. But he must be more; as a health officer he must be a teacher of the people to Show them why all these things are to be. The slow ness with which practicable betterments have been adopted among the rank and file is, partly at least, due to the separation of functions, of specialization, and partly to the exclusiveness of agents in the work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Hygiene and Sanitation The excellence of the Mosaic code of the Hebrews is acknowledged by all sanitary authorities, and its effects are seen to this day in the comparative longevity of the race. The Greeks cultivated to the extreme both the physical and mental faculties, and had for their motto A sound mind in a sound body. The Romans, in their aqueducts for conveying water to the city and in the Cloaca Maxima, have left some wonderful examples of sanitary engineering, which are, in certain respects, not yet surpassed. All of which serves to Show that the ancients appreciated the importance of maintaining and improving health, and the influence of material condi tions and environment upon sanitation.
