Book Community and Culture

Download or read book Community and Culture written by K.V. Subbanna and published by Akshara Prakashana. This book was released on with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of K.V. Subbanna reveal the range, dimension and courage of an intellectual who never, ever, let the pressures of contemporary cultural politics affect his free and open enquiries into the nature of the culture of the land he was rooted in. K.V. Subbanna was an organic intellectual who drew his intellectual powers from a sense of community that was vibrant and alive and never from the context of a centralising nation-state and its dominant quality of homogenizing practically every aspect of social and cultural life. The spirit of decentralisation was what a community symbolised for Subbanna and all his writings – on literature, theatre, cinema, language – engender this vital principle of decentralization. For that matter even the smallest community was, for him, a complex, heterogeneous universe, quite autonomous at one level, yet, at another, an integral part of the entire globe... In other words, for Subbanna concern for the community also meant a deep commitment to the whole world for the two are part of, and grow from, each other. It was this faith in the 'local' and the 'global' that helped Subbanna locate Ninasam in Heggodu while drawing from ideas, thinkers, artistes from all over the world... This book contains three sections comprising several essays and lectures by Subbanna written and delivered at various points of time; an interview that he conducted and two interviews others conducted with him; and tributes paid to him by two individuals who are important cultural spokespersons of our times and happened to know Subbanna quite intimately. An English book by Akshara Prakashana

Book excerpt: India prides itself in a rich tradition of diversity, dialogue and debate. Our democracy draws its sustenance from this tradition. Myths, texts and systems of faith and thought have been cherished, revisited and also challenged. They have often inspired imaginative versions through oral retellings and local adaptations. The dynamism of Indian culture has kept it open to influences and has stood the test of time. In Words Matter, edited by eminent poet and scholar K. Satchidanandan, scholars and writers including Romila Thapar, Githa Hariharan, Pankaj Mishra, Salil Tripathi and Ananya Vajpeyi discuss these definitive values from various points of view. The contributors argue that we must nurture critical thinking to fight all kinds of discrimination and insularity. It lies in our interest as a modern nation to preserve our cultural strength and help democracy flourish.

Book Theatres of India

Download or read book Theatres of India written by Ananda Lal and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatres of India, edited by Professor Ananda Lal, is a comprehensive and accessible guide to theatre in India. The volume surveys both rural and urban modes of Indian theatre across its history of over 2000 years. The first section brings together entries that discuss theatres of India's linguistic regions. The second section includes entries on specific forms and genres, as well as on topics such as street theatre, music, and Tagore's dramatic oeuvre. The book avoids both the Western scholarship's obsession with traditional Asian forms of performance, as well as Indian city-based theatre workers' view that traditional forms do not even qualify as 'theatre'. 'Theatre' in this volume is defined as any form that contains theatre's fundamental element, acting. Importantly, the entries are accompanied by photographs of performances that allow us to view the 'visual-ness' of India's performance forms. In keeping with the highest standards of international reference publishing, Ananda Lal has compiled and edited material from several contributors so that each entry allows us to tap individual documentation and knowledge. Also included in this pioneering, authoritative, and collective resource are short bibliographies for every entry on the regional theatres. Theatres of India will be useful for general readers, theatre professionals, as well as students and researchers of theatre and performance studies.
