Book excerpt: Southern Monterey Bay was the most intensively mined shoreline (with sand removed directly from the surf zone) in the U.S. during the period from 1906 until 1990, when the mines were closed following hypotheses that the mining caused coastal erosion It is estimated that the yearly averaged amount of mined sand between 1940 and 1984 was 128,000 m3/yr, which is approximately 50% of the yearly average dune volume loss during this period. To assess the impact of sand mining, erosion rates along an 18km range of shoreline during the times of intensive sand mining (1940-2004). Most of the shoreline is composed of unconsolidated sand with extensive sand dunes rising up to a height of 46 m, vulnerable to the erosive forces of storm waves. Erosion is defined here as a recession of the top edge of the dune. Recession was determined using stereo-photogrammetry, and LIDAR and OPS surveys. Long-term erosion rates vary from about 0.5 m/y in the middle of the range, and then decrease northward. Erosion events are episodic and occur when storm waves and high tides coincide, allowing swath to undercut the dune and resulting in permanent recession. Erosion appears to be correlated with the occurrence of El Ninos. The calculated volume lots of the dune in southern Monterey Bay during the 1997-98 El Nino winter was 1,820,000 m3/yr. After cessation of sand mining in 1990, the erosion rates decreased at locations in the southern end of the bay but have not significantly changed at other locations.

This budget is based heavily upon sediment information obtained from field and laboratory studies. These studies included a detailed quasi-synoptic areal sampling to determine distribution of textural patterns, and a time-series study of beach and surf-zone sand samples obtained from local sand-mining companies. Results from these studies were combined with data on river discharge, the wind and wave regimes, and shoreline changes during the past century to develop quantitative estimates of sediment gains and losses to the cell. It was determined that the major sources of sediment are the discharge from the Salinas River which empties into the northeast corner of the cell, and erosion of Quaternary seacliffs which form the inner bay shore. Major sinks are the Monterey Submarine Canyon, active coastal dune fields, the mining companies, and the offshore area. The recent history of the sediment regime in the southern bay is reviewed, and a forecast of future nearshore changes is made. Recommendations for further work needed to refine the budget computations are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: A sediment budget analysis based on the principle of mass conservation is performed for Monterey Bay. The various littoral processes in the Bay are evaluated quantitatively. The results indicate that about 2.1 million cubic yards of sand are deposited annually into the Bay, which is treated as a quasi-closed system. Deposition from cliff erosion, computed from the cliffs profile changes, amounted to 5.6 million cubic yards, and accounted for 27% of the total deposit. River discharges were extrapolated using a power law formula; the total yield was 1.4 million cubic yards, representing 54% of the entire sediment deposition. The potential longshore drift was evaluated using a 18 years spectral wave climatology; its contribution was 4.09 million cubic yards which amounts to 19%. Sediment losses accrued from submarine canyon deposition, sand mining operations, offshore deposition by rip currents and eolian sediment transport to the dunes; these losses amounted to 2.34 million cubic yards and were all estimates taken from previous studies. The budget deficit signifies an erosion trend along the Bay. The effects of sand mining to coastal erosion are discussed. Recommendations needed to refine the budget analysis and to establish a correlation between the budget deficit and shoreline erosion are presented for further research.

Book excerpt: This study assessed the downstream river system adaptation in response to upstream damming on the Ribb River, Ethiopia, to irrigate 15,000 ha. It combined primary and secondary data, and the application of remote sensing and mathematical modeling. The pre-dam morphodynamic trends of the Ribb River were analyzed for 59 years based on aerial photographs, satellite images, and newly collected field data. Three dam operation scenarios were developed to analyze the long-term hydro-morphological effects of the dam on the downstream river reaches. It also assessed the applicability of physics-based analytical equations (Equilibrium Theory) compared to a 1D numerical model (SOBEK-RE) to determine the least-morphologically impactful dam operation scenario on the river reaches downstream of the dam. Moreover, a HEC-RAS 2D hydrodynamic model was developed to assess the effect of the dam on the flooding extent of the Fogera Plain. This was used to study the potential implications of hydrological alteration on the ecology of the floodplain wetlands, as they are the habitats of important fish and bird species. The results contribute to knowledge on the hydro-morphological and environmental impacts of dams on downstream river systems. The developed methodologies and findings may be used to study future hydro-morphological and ecological changes that may arise due to other dam operations or climate change.

Book excerpt: Sand dune erosion is highly episodic occurring only when storm waves coincide with high tides generating swash that impacts the toe of the dune. Owing to the episodic nature of sand dune erosion, it is difficult to observe in nature. The removal of a structure and rip-rap sea-wall from the Stilwell Hall site located in southern Monterey Bay provided a unique opportunity to study erosion processes at an accelerated rate. A 1-D wave impact line erosion model (Larson et al., 2004) was tested against data acquired at this site between April, 2004 and April 2005. The model was optimally tuned to the data by a dimensionless coefficient that relates the impact force to the rate of recession. The coefficient values ranged from 0.7-1.3x10-3, for this field data, compared with values of 1.0-2.5x10-3 previously obtained for lab and field data. Migrating rip currents create a system of mega-cusps, which are nominally 10m in width and 200m in alongshore wavelength (Thornton, 2005). The presence of mega- cusps is hypothesized to accelerate sand dune erosion at their embayments where the beach is steeper and narrowest (Short, 1979; Shih and Komar, 1984; Revell, et al., 2002). It was determined that the highest recession occurred at the location of the rip current/mega-cusp embayment. Changes in the surf climate are of great interest to Naval Special Warfare (NSW) and U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) forces tasked with planning and executing operations in littoral areas. Naval history is replete with operations highlighting the importance of understanding and accurate prediction of nearshore dynamics. Without the ability to predict nearshore morphologic processes, providing such support is impossible.
