Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sand-Lime and Other Concrete Bricks Without denying the special merits of other blocks in special circumstances, it may be safely asserted that for all ordinary uses there is no better building-block than the ordinary brick. It has been evolved by thousands of years' experience in all parts of the civilised world as the ideal block for hand use. Its size varies within narrow limits; for instance, in Scotland and India it is slightly larger than in England; in the United States and Belgium it is slightly smaller. But this small variation is, in itself, a clear testimony to the suitability of the standard; to depart from it entirely is merely to make a block that is quite unsuitable for ordinary use. In material there is scope for greater variation; Within the universal standard material, burnt clay, there is so wide a range of quality that it would be difficult to go outside it With any other material. It is at all times legitimate, therefore, and in present circum stances profitable, to consider the preparation and use of bricks made of materials other than burnt clay. Book Cement Concrete and Bricks Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cement Concrete and Bricks Classic Reprint written by Alfred Broadhead Searle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cement, Concrete and Bricks Of all building materials which are not found in a state of nature, the most important are, unquestionably, cement, concrete and bricks. The first of these includes a large variety of materials used to bind together particles of stone, sand, and other naturally occurring materials; the second - used in a broad sense - includes all kinds of artificial stones made by cementing various materials together without the aid of heat, and the last - bricks - includes an even larger number of different articles, distinguished by their general form and by the fact that heat has been used to render their shape permanent. It is a mistake to suppose that all bricks are made of clay; at the present time they are made from a number of other materials, such as destructor refuse, sand, slag, etc. Indeed, the composition of some bricks so closely resembles that of concrete as to render it necessary to include them as one of the forms taken by this material. It is important, in considering the chemical and other properties of these three typical building materials, to observe the genetic relationships between them. To neglect this is to enter upon a course of study which is exceptionally difficult, and to follow a pathway of thought along which many men have lost their way. So long as cement and concrete are considered as having nothing in common with bricks, and vice versa, it is almost impossible to understand the constitution of any of these materials. Separately, they lead to no important conclusions, but considered together they throw a light on each other's characteristics which is as important as it is unexpected. Until a few years ago the brick industry of this country had no men of sufficient scientific training to study adequately the constitution of the materials used or the chemical and physical changes which occur during manufacture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cement-Lime Mortars The proportion of each material was varied in amounts of 5 per cent by weight, based on total dry weight of mix. This made 231 possible combinations. All of 0 these were used in tests for compressive strength and for plasticity. For tests of other properties only 105 different mixes were used, which included all those with 50 per cent of sand and over and, in addition, the mixes represented by the remaining points on the border of each diagram. Book Limestone Screenings As a Substitute for Sand in Mortar and Concrete

Download or read book Limestone Screenings As a Substitute for Sand in Mortar and Concrete written by Frederick William Kasten and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Limestone Screenings as a Substitute for Sand in Mortar and Concrete: Thesis Concrete is becoming the most widely used structural material of the present day. Its increase in use has been so rapid that the investigations into its properties have fallen behind. As a result there are some sharp differences of opinion concerning its use and manufacture. For instance, there is considerable dispute as to whether limestone screenings, or crusher dust, is a suitable substitute for sand. The Chicago and Western Indiana in its track elevation in Chicago used sand from Indiana, when they could have obtained limestone screenings from Thornton only twenty milw away on their own line. On the other hand, the Chicago, Book Island and Pacific used crushed limestone obtained from old buildings in the concrete for their new depot and used the screenings instead of sand. The New York Subway used crusher dust for grouting: but the Boston Subway used sand for the same purpose. In Chicago, contractors vary in their preference. Download or read book Compressive Strength of Clay Brick Walls Classic Reprint written by A. H. Stang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressive Strength of Clay Brick Walls Tests of walls built of sand-lime brick have been made and the results reported in Technologic Paper no. 276. The present paper reports and discusses the results of the tests on clay brick masonry. In this report walls numbered 1 to 17 are of such construction as to permit comparison with those built of sand-lime brick, but it should be noted that the sand-lime brick used were Of slightly higher coma pressive strength than those used in the construction of walls 1 to 17, inclusive. The effect Of brick strength on wall strength is dis cussed herein. The tests on masonry Of cement brick have not yet (1929) been made. The scope Of this investigation has been extended much beyond the original plan, for it seemed desirable to discover, if possible, some of the factors which influence or measure masonry strength. It is believed that much pertinent information, not heretofore known and analyzed, has been disclosed and that this information may be useful to engineers and architects and to the construction industry generally. Book Hydrated Lime

Download or read book Hydrated Lime written by E. W. Lazell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrated Lime: History, Manufacture and Uses in Plaster, Mortar, Concrete; A Manual for the Architect, Engineer, Contractor and Builder Lime, Which possesses many advantages over the older Lump Lime. The art of using lime is one of the very oldest connected with the building trade and was probably brought to its greatest perfection by the Greeks and Romans. Since these ancient times until very recently little or no improvement has been introduced in the preparation of plaster or stucco made from lime. Probably the reason for this is the time and care required to slake the lump lime used to prepare the mortar. With the use of hydrated lime the time required to slake and age the quick lime is done away with. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
