Book Sand Island Dykes Beaufort Sea

Download or read book Sand Island Dykes Beaufort Sea written by Western Canada Hydraulic Laboratories Ltd and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to improve the understanding of the processes at work in the construction of artificial islands in the Beaufort Sea. In particular, the study investigates the settling characteristics of a sand-water slurry discharged above the sea bed from a pipe fitted with a chain basket nozzle. The primary objective was to assess feasible sand slopes and dyke heights with the discharge nozzle arrangements prepared for construction operations in 1981. Model tests have been carried out at 1:5 scale to examine the settling characteristics of sand discharged from a pipe through a nozzle. Test facilities were set up to run experiments under controlled conditions into the effect of varying the nozzle design, nozzle height, nozzle movement and slurry specific gravity on the side slopes and crater formation of the resulting sand cones and/or dykes. ... From numerical analyses of the test results it was found that up to 35 percent of the pumped sand was not effectively used in building the cone formation but settled outside the cone area on the sand bed. It was anticipated that, depending on sand and ambient current characteristics, full scale cone and dyke construction operations in the field could experience losses of 50 percent of the pumped sand. The test study results showed that to ensure construction of constant dyke heights at the desired level in the field, preliminary calculation of sand volumes, discharge and nozzle movement rates must be carried out anticipating the likely degree of sand loss. Extreme nozzle motions should be avoided during construction"--ASTIS database.

Book Sedimentary Coastal Zones from High to Low Latitudes

Download or read book Sedimentary Coastal Zones from High to Low Latitudes written by I.P. Martini and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world where the loss of sea ice and thawing of coastal grounds in the north, and renewed marine transgression and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events globally, are becoming commonplace. This volume presents a timely examination of coasts, the geological environment at particular risk, as global warming brings on this new reality. In 23 papers, low lying, mainly siliciclastic coasts are reviewed, described and analysed, under a variety of climates in quasi-stable tectonic settings along passive, trailing-continental edges from Polar Regions to the Tropics. Examples include coast of the Arctic seas, temperate to tropical eastern shores of the Americas, western Portugal, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, South Africa and Australia. The entire coastal zone (landscape) is considered ranging from geophysical processes and products to biological entities including the adaption of Native People in various climatic zones. Knowledge of the state of the coasts now, and how the coastal plain has evolved since Late Pleistocene, is crucial for any realistic planning for the future.

Book Seas at the Millennium

Download or read book Seas at the Millennium written by Charles R. C. Sheppard and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Seas at the Millennium

Download or read book Seas at the Millennium written by C. Sheppard and published by . This book was released on 2000-10-19 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable work, published in September 2000, provides a comprehensive review of the environmental condition of the seas of the world, sea by sea and region by region. It focuses on all aspects of man's interactions with the seas and with their biological and physical systems. The three volumes of Seas at the Millennium: an Environmental Evaluation cover issues of global and regional importance such as: biological description of the coast and continental shelf waters; development and use of the coast; landfill and its effects; pollutant discharges over time; effects of over-fishing; management methods and techniques used to ensure continued ecosystem functioning. The relative importance of water-borne and airborne routes differ in different parts of the world, so routes and paths of pollutant movement in different areas will be examined and described in their local and global context. Each chapter is written by experts in the field. The regional chapters include: an historical overview of the area concerned in environmental terms; uses to which it has been put and to which it is put today; its current environmental status and major problems arising from human use of both the sea and its watershed; informed comment on major trends, problems and successes; and recommendations for the future. The global issues chapters cover major habitats and species groups, governmental, education and legal issues, fisheries effects, remote sensing, climate change and management.
