Download or read book Alex Miller the ruin of time written by Robert Dixon and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Miller: The Ruin of Time is the first sole-authored critical survey of the respected Australian novelist's eleven novels. While these books are immediately accessible to the general reading public, they are manifestly works of high literary seriousness - substantial, technically masterful and assured, intricately interconnected, and of great imaginative, intellectual and ethical weight. Among his many prizes and awards, Alex Miller has twice won the Miles Franklin Literary Award, for The Ancestor Game in 1993, and Journey to the Stone Country in 2003; the Commonwealth Writers' prize, also for The Ancestor Game in 1993; and the New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards Christina Stead Prize, for Conditions of Faith in 2001 and Lovesong in 2011. He received a Centenary Medal in 2001 and the Melbourne Prize for Literature in 2012. In 2011 he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. Having published his eleventh novel, Coal Creek, in 2013 - which won the Victorian Premier's Fiction Award in 2014 - Miller is currently writing an autobiographical memoir with the working title 'Horizons'.

Download or read book Hunters at the Margin written by John Sandlos and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunters at the Margin examines the conflict in the Northwest Territories between Native hunters and conservationists over three big game species: the wood bison, the muskox, and the caribou. John Sandlos argues that the introduction of game regulations, national parks, and game sanctuaries was central to the assertion of state authority over the traditional hunting cultures of the Dene and Inuit. His archival research undermines the assumption that conservationists were motivated solely by enlightened preservationism, revealing instead that commercial interests were integral to wildlife management in Canada.

Day Hiking: The San Juans and Gulf Islands is divided into roughly four sections: Anacortes, for many the gateway to the region; the San Juan Islands themselves, including some key islands not served by Washington State Ferries; Victoria, Canada, providing easy access to the Gulf Islands, as well as other unique destinations; and the magical southern Gulf Islands. Author Craig Romano explores state parks, county parks, and provincial parks as well as some municipal and regional parks. He also features the recent expansion of San Juan Island National Historic Park on San Juan Island and the recently created Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, spanning several of the southern Gulf Islands, both of which are not yet familiar to many hikers. While the star attractions are the ferry-accessed islands, Romano also features several of the larger islands that don’t have ferry service (e.g., Stuart Island)——making this guide of interest to paddlers and boaters who are looking for hikes too! Key features of this guide: 136 hikes (approximately 50% American, 50% Canadian locations) Ferry travel tips Car-camping recommendations Border-crossing details All distances and elevations in both English and metric units Overview maps for both the San Juans and Gulf Islands **Mountaineers Books designates 1 percent of the sales of select guidebooks in our Day Hiking series toward volunteer trail maintenance. Their efforts are essential to the land managers who maintain thousands of acres on shoestring budgets.

Download or read book Disease Health and Ape Conservation written by Arcus Foundation and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth volume of State of the Apes brings together original research and analysis with topical case studies and emerging best practice to further the ape conservation agenda around disease and health. It provides an overview of relevant disease and health issues and explores factors such as the ethics of intervening in and managing ape health; the impact of research and tourism on apes; the One Health approach; and disaster management and the protection of apes. It shows how the welfare of apes is interrelated with that of the people who share their habitats, while also demonstrating the benefits of integrating ape conservation in health, socioeconomic activities (such as in the extractive industries, industrial agriculture and infrastructure development), and regulatory policy and practice at all levels, from the local to the international.
