Book Records of Convocation VI Canterbury 1444 1509

Download or read book Records of Convocation VI Canterbury 1444 1509 written by Gerald Lewis Bray and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2005 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The convocation records of the Churches of England and Ireland are the principal source of our information about the administration of those churches from middle ages until modern times. They contain the minutes of clergy synods, the legislation passed by them, tax assessments imposed by the king on the clergy, and accounts of the great debates about religious reformation; they also include records of heresy trials in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, many of them connected with the spread of Lollardy. However, they have never before been edited or published in full, and their publication as a complete set of documents provides a valuable resource for scholarship. This volume contains the acts of convocation during the wars of the roses and the reign of Henry VII. Most of this material has never been published before, and the collection of different sources enables us to see how both Edward IV and Henry VII modernized the institution along the lines of their other administrative reforms. We are also able to trace the church's reaction to the Lambert Simnel affair in the only documents which are exactly contemporary with the events.

This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Middle Ages saw the emergence of professional jurists as a new functionary elite. The study approaches this phenomenon by focusing on a singular individual: Dietrich von Bocksdorf, Professor of Canon Law in Leipzig, learned counselor to the elector of Saxony, bishop of Naumburg. The book thereby breaks new ground. It offers not only a biography, but explores large and previously unused and largely unknown collections of more than 500 papers from the legal practice, written by the Leipzig Ordinarius. Based on this unique material the book examines for the first time spheres of influence, circles of clients and occupational fields of an individual late medieval german jurist. Legal opinions (“consilia”) and pleadings, but as well working tools for the emerging learned practice of “Common Saxon Law” made by Dietrich von Bocksdorf, provide deep insights into the beginnings of the epochal change from the traditional-archaic jurisdiction of the Middle Ages to the scholarly and written practice of law in the early modern world.

Book A Calendar of the Registers of the Priory of Llanthony by Gloucester 1457 1466 1501 1525

Download or read book A Calendar of the Registers of the Priory of Llanthony by Gloucester 1457 1466 1501 1525 written by John Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their base at Gloucester the priors of Llanthony ultimately controlled two monasteries of that name in England and Wales and a house in Ireland. They were lords of 41 manors and patrons of 115 parish churches and chapels in the three countries. Their registers are in the rare form of letter-books recording the memoranda, letters, deeds and inventories which crossed their desks year by year. They reveal among much else the chaotic leadership of the Augustinian college at Oxford, Cardinal Wolsey's heroic efforts to reform the Augustinian order and the cardinal’s revenge when his plans were frustrated. They are packed with details of people, places and events on the priory's properties: more than 300 entries for Gloucestershire, 80 for Herefordshire, 20 for Monmouthshire, 17 for Ireland, 7 each for Shropshire, Wiltshire and Bedfordshire and 4 for Hampshire. A treatise about relations between the priors and the town of Gloucester tells of plague, drowning, murders, arrests and hasty recuttings of the town ditch. Other entries deal with the import of Irish linen, the teaching of grammar, the maintenance of a clock, the carpentry of a watermill and a fish-weir, rabbit-keeping, sheep-shearing, apple species, wagons, manorial halls, bailiffs' chambers, the tiling of roofs and the glazing of windows.
