Book Transformations of Romanness

Download or read book Transformations of Romanness written by Walter Pohl and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman identity is one of the most interesting cases of social identity because in the course of time, it could mean so many different things: for instance, Greek-speaking subjects of the Byzantine empire, inhabitants of the city of Rome, autonomous civic or regional groups, Latin speakers under ‘barbarian’ rule in the West or, increasingly, representatives of the Church of Rome. Eventually, the Christian dimension of Roman identity gained ground. The shifting concepts of Romanness represent a methodological challenge for studies of ethnicity because, depending on its uses, Roman identity may be regarded as ‘ethnic’ in a broad sense, but under most criteria, it is not. Romanness is indeed a test case how an established and prestigious social identity can acquire many different shades of meaning, which we would class as civic, political, imperial, ethnic, cultural, legal, religious, regional or as status groups. This book offers comprehensive overviews of the meaning of Romanness in most (former) Roman provinces, complemented by a number of comparative and thematic studies. A similarly wide-ranging overview has not been available so far.

Book Records of the English Province of the Society of Jesus

Download or read book Records of the English Province of the Society of Jesus written by Henry Foley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the English Province of the Society of Jesus: Historic Facts Illustrative of the Labours and Sufferings of Its Members in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries The following pages were already in print when it came to the knowledge of the Editor, that Canon F. R. Raines, the well known and learned antiquarian, had been furnished by the lateright Rev. Dr. Goss, Bishop of Liverpool, with a copy Of the narrative Of Father Cuthbert Clifton (alias Norris), relating to'the conversion Of James, Earl Of Derby, on his way to the scaffold, and which must have been given to the Bishop by the late Dr. Oliver. The Canon publishes this narrative in his appendix to the life of that noble man1 as a literary curiosity, without admitting that it affects in any way the fidelity Of the Earl to the faith he had heretofore held. He lays great stress on its want of publication, at, or near the period in question, and on the inherent improbability of such an event happening at such a time and place, in opposition to all the Earl's antecedent convictions. Book In the Footsteps of the Ancients

Download or read book In the Footsteps of the Ancients written by Ronald G. Witt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph demonstrates why humanism began in Italy in the mid-thirteenth century. It considers Petrarch a third generation humanist, who christianized a secular movement. The analysis traces the beginning of humanism in poetry and its gradual penetration of other Latin literary genres, and, through stylistic analyses of texts, the extent to which imitation of the ancients produced changes in cognition and visual perception. The volume traces the link between vernacular translations and the emergence of Florence as the leader of Latin humanism by 1400 and why, limited to an elite in the fourteenth century, humanism became a major educational movement in the first decades of the fifteenth. It revises our conception of the relationship of Italian humanism to French twelfth-century humanism and of the character of early Italian humanism itself.
