Neil Rusch’s superb photographs, complemented by John Parkington’s thought-provoking text, bring to life these enigmatic markings and the way of life of their creators. Neil Rusch is an independent publisher, writer and photographer. He entered publishing after studying journalism at Rhodes University and later became the editor of SA Yachting magazine. He has produced The Mantis, the Eland and the Hunter and other books in the Follow the San series for the Krakadouw Trust and the Living Landscape Project. John Parkington is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cape Town, and has had a lifelong research interest in southern African hunters and gatherers. He has published a number of academic papers and books on the subject and is involved in the Living Landscape Project in Clanwilliam.

Guenther explores the pervasiveness of human-animal hybridity and transformation in San expressive culture (myth, stories and storytelling, ludic dancing and art, ancestral rock art and contemporary easel art), ritual (trance dance curing, female and male rites of passage) and hunting. Transformation is shown to be experienced by humans, particularly via rituals and dancing that evoke animal identity mergers, but also by hunters who may engage with their prey animals in terms of sympathy and inter-subjectivity, particularly through the use of “hunting medicines.”

It examines the ‘on the ground’ history of colonialism from the vantage point of a small town in the Karoo region, showing how patterns of possession and dispossession have played out in the municipality and schools. Using the strong political and ontological critique of decoloniality theories, the book demonstrates the ways in which government interventions over many years have allowed colonial relations and the construction of racialised differences to linger in new forms, including unequal access to schooling. Written in an accessible style, the book considers how the dream of decolonial schooling might be realised, from the vantage point of research on the margins. This Karoo region also offers an interesting case study as the site where the world’s largest radio telescope was recently located and highlights the contrasting logics of international ‘big science’ and local development needs.
