Download or read book River Flowing From The Sunrise written by James M Aton and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors recount twelve millennia of history along the lower San Juan River, much of it the story of mostly unsuccessful human attempts to make a living from the river's arid and fickle environment. From the Anasazi to government dam builders, from Navajo to Mormon herders and farmers, from scientific explorers to busted miners, the San Juan has attracted more attention and fueled more hopes than such a remote, unpromising, and muddy stream would seem to merit.

Book Flora of the Four Corners Region

Download or read book Flora of the Four Corners Region written by Kenneth D. Heil and published by Missouri Botanical Garden Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This massive contribution to floristic knowledge of western North America describes the 2,303 species, subspecies, and varieties of vascular plants currently known to grow spontaneously in the drainage basin of the San Juan River, a major tributary of the Colorado River. It includes parts of four states in the southwestern United States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah), one of the regions of North America with the highest rate of plant endemicity. While rich in natural beauty and resources, the Four Corners region faces rapid development and population growth resulting in extensive habitat fragmentation and loss, erosion, and overuse. The need for a comprehensive flora of the region has never been more urgent.

Book Colorado River Basin Water Management

Download or read book Colorado River Basin Water Management written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of past climate and streamflow conditions have broadened understanding of long-term water availability in the Colorado River, revealing many periods when streamflow was lower than at any time in the past 100 years of recorded flows. That information, along with two important trends-a rapid increase in urban populations in the West and significant climate warming in the region-will require that water managers prepare for possible reductions in water supplies that cannot be fully averted through traditional means. Colorado River Basin Water Management assesses existing scientific information, including temperature and streamflow records, tree-ring based reconstructions, and climate model projections, and how it relates to Colorado River water supplies and demands, water management, and drought preparedness. The book concludes that successful adjustments to new conditions will entail strong and sustained cooperation among the seven Colorado River basin states and recommends conducting a comprehensive basinwide study of urban water practices that can be used to help improve planning for future droughts and water shortages.
