Perhaps a surfeit of space led the westering pioneers to be profligate with the names they bestowed on the land: a modest region of the West was often larger than a whole European country so it deserved the name. A "country" in the western American sense usually took its name from its distinguishing feature -- physical, historical, social, institutional.
