Book excerpt: Excerpt from San Juan Capistrano Mission It was owing to the animosity of Rivera, as we know from the narrative on San Diego, that the two Fathers Lasuen and Amurrio were compelled to remain idle for nearly a year. Peremptory or ders from Viceroy Bucareli at last put an end to the chicanery. Fr. Serra, then at San Diego, was so overjoyed when the orders arrived that he rang the bells and celebrated a High Mass in thanksgiving. Having received orders to see that Mission San Juan Capistrano be established without delay on the site pre viously selected, Rivera detailed a guard of ten soldiers under a corporal. Instead of sending back Fr. Lasuen to lay the founda tions, Fr. Serra appointed him senior missionary of San Diego. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from San Diego Mission California, in the early days, was divided into four mili tary districts. The headquarters or garrisons were located at San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco, respectively. These military posts provided the guards for the Missions situated within the limits of their jurisdiction. The military district of San Diego embraced the Missions of San Diego, San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and San Gabriel, of which the City of Los Angeles in spiritual mat ters was a dependency. Although independent of one an other, a sort of union or connection existed among the Missions of the district. This suggested the geographical rather than the chronological order in relating the local his tory of the twenty-one Missions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In and Out of the Old Missions of California: An Historical and Pictorial Account of the Franciscan Missions Experts have studied the history and digested it, and in my own readings I have browsed and culled wherever I could find anything that I thought would help make this story more complete and interesting. The fields from which I have reaped are many, and if, for any reason, save in the case of Bancroft, I have quoted and failed to give credit, I tender my apologies in advance, make confession, and ask for the absolution that I am sure, were I dealing with one of the old padres, would generously be given. Book Spanish Mission Records at San Antonio Vol 10 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spanish Mission Records at San Antonio Vol 10 Classic Reprint written by Herbert E. Bolton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Mission Records at San Antonio, Vol. 10 The whole collection Of Spanish papers, which does not aggre gate more than pages, perhaps, falls into two groups. The larger and much completer one consists of records of the parochial church which served the Villa of San Fernando de Bexar and the adjacent Presidio Of San Antonio de Bexar. The smaller group is composed of records of the missions located near by. It is with the latter that I shall deal here. In the immediate neighborhood of San Antonio five Spanish missions were established and Operated in the 18th century, while a sixth was projected and nominally founded, but was actually con ducted as a part Of one of the other five. The five actually estab lished were San Antonio de Valero which had existed for merly on the Rio Grande as San Francisco Solano, San J os de Aguayo Nuestra Senora de la Purissima Concepcion San Juan Capistrano (1731) and San Francisco de la Espada The sixth, San Xavier de Naxera, was nominally founded in 1722, and the neophytes intended for it, though minis tered to from San Antonio de Valero, were apparently kept separate till 1726, when they were definitely attached to this mission. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary swallows aren't the only annual returnees to San Juan Capistrano. The great coastal mission draws more than 500,000 visitors a year into the southern reaches of Orange County. The most famous of all the missions in the California system established in the 18th century by Franciscan friar Junipero Serra, Mission San Juan Capistrano still contains the Serra Chapel, the oldest church in California, and the only building still standing where the good padre celebrated mass. But San Juan Capistrano is more than its well-known mission. Its epic story encompasses the rancho days and land barons, California statehood, the arrival of the San Diego Freeway in 1958, city incorporation in 1961, and recent growth from 10,000 residents in 1974 to 34,000 in 2004.
