Book excerpt: Excerpt from The San Jose or Chinese Scale The estimates given in our early publications of the seriousness of this pest have been more than borne out by the experience of the last ten years. Since its appearance on the Atlantic seaboard in the early nineties it has, in spite Of all efforts at control in nurseries and by State quarantine, spread well over the eastern and middle United States and into Canada, so that there are now very few regions where fruit growing is at all important in which it has not gained permanent foothold. Maine and a féw of the middle western States have not so far reported this scale insect, but it is only a question of time when it will complete its extension over the entire fruit-growing areas of North America within its climatic range. Nevertheless the San Jose scale has not been an unmitigated scourge, and the active investigations by the Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agriculture and the entomologists of the State experiment stations have demonstrated the practicability of several means of control, and particularly of the lime-sulfur wash; so that the fears aroused by this scale insect are rapidly subsiding and it no longer is considered as an insurmountable obstacle to the growth of deciduous fruits. In the case of certain fruits, as, for example, the peach, it has been found that the lime-sulfur wash has a very great value as a fungicide, and so much so that some growers are recom mending its use whether the San Jose scale be present in the orchard or not. Furthermore, the presence of this scale has led to\ much more careful methods on the part of nurserymen and in the planting and care of stock, thus raising the standard and giving the intelligent and conscientious, painstaking grower a distinct advantage over his care less neighbor. The results in the East, in other words, are following rather closely on the experience in California and elsewhere on the Pacific coast, Where the San Jose scale, long looked upon as the worst menace of the deciduous-fruit interests, is now not necessarily so regarded, and the same benefits have come to California fruit growing by the use of better methods of planting, pruning, and care. Tion explains the discrepancy, the 1907 plot having an average grade before treatment of degrees, and the 1911 plot a grade of degrees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The San Jose Scale in Illinois The surface of the bark, when it is completely covered, has to the naked eye a minutely roughened, incrusted, and unhealthy look, and a dusky or dark grayish hue. If the surface be rubbed by the finger, it will have a greasy feel, due to an oily uid from the crushed insects. Examined under a good glass, the nipple-like centers of the young scales and the circular grooves surrounding these give a very characteristic appearance to the encrusted sur face. From other common fruit scales it is very readily distin guished, especially in the winter, by its circular form, by its smaller size, and by the absence of eggs beneath it. The other common apple scales are the oyster-shell bark-louse and the scurfy scale, both of which are oblong, varying in length from a tenth to a sixth of an inch. Under each scale of these species will be found at this season a little collection of oval eggs, yellow or nearly white under the oyster-shell scale, and maroon-red under the scurfy scale. The San Jose scale, on the other hand, does not commonly lay eggs, but brings forth its young alive.416 bulletin No. 48. The experiments consisted of a single application of the insecticide in every case, with varying subsequent treatments of the different trees with water. Frequent counts of dead and living scales were made for all of the trees, no attention being paid in these counts to old scales, outworn and dead, but only to those whose size and immature character showed that they belonged to the new generation of the preceding fall. Counts of dead and living scales were made in all cases either before or shortly after the applica tion of the insecticide spray. It was. In this way ascertained that an average of about fifty per cent. Of the immature scales were al ready dead on these trees before the insecticide was applied; and that the action of the insecticide was scarcely perceptible within the first twenty-four hours. But in many cases the infested wood was injured or dead and most or all of the scale-insects were dead in consequence, before the spray was applied. In June, when the twigs were cut for the second examination to show the effect of the treatment, the trees were in leaf and it was easy to distinguish the living from the dead branches. Only living branches, of course, were examined at this time, and in some cases the number of living insects after the treat ment exceeded the number found on the injured branches at the first examination.
