Book In the Footsteps of the Etruscans

Download or read book In the Footsteps of the Etruscans written by Graeme Barker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Footsteps of the Etruscans describes the archaeology of the countryside within a ten km radius of the small town of Tuscania near Rome, throwing light on the unrecorded lives of the generations of farmers and shepherds who have lived there. What was the character of prehistoric settlement prior to Etruscan urbanization? How did urbanization shape the lives of the 'ordinary Etruscans' working the land, hardly ever addressed in Etruscan archaeology? What was the impact on these people of being absorbed into the expanding Roman empire and its globalised economic structures? How did the empire's collapse and the subsequent emergence of the nucleated medieval village affect Tuscania's rural population? The project's 7500-year 'archaeological history', from the first farmers to those grappling with globalisation today, contributes eloquently to our understanding of how Mediterranean peoples have constantly shaped their landscape, and been shaped by it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Livy describes the Etruscans as filling the whole of ancient Italy with their power and influence. While Etruscan rule throughout large parts of the Italian peninsula endured for but a few centuries, Etruscan influence was so extensive that in some respects it continues into the present. Outside the Etruscan heartland, Rome itself was perhaps the best preserver of things Etruscan. The fourteen essays comprising this volume explore Etruscan Italy and examine the influence exerted by Etruscan civilization upon the cultures of Italy in Roman and post-Roman times. Represented are contributions from various disciplines which converge to employ multiple methodologies in a comprehensive approach to delineating the enduring themes of Etruscan Italy.

Book excerpt: The Ivy Leaf Group is one of the local pottery groups producing black-figure vases in Etruria in the second half of the 6th century BC. To date 57 vases are attributed to the group: 40 amphorae, 2 jugs, 5 kyathoi, 8 oinochoai and 2 dinoi. The Ivy Leaf vases have earlier been presented in lists by Dohrn 1937 and Drukker 1986. The complilation of a new and current catalogue with all the available information and photographs was the first aim of this work. The present catalogue is arranged with reference to the pottery shapes and to the iconography: dancing figures with ivy leaves (which have given the name to the group), motifs from the Dionysian sphere, fantasy figures and ordinary animals.
