Book Geothermal retrofit Study for the National Orange Show Facilities in San Bernardino California

Download or read book Geothermal retrofit Study for the National Orange Show Facilities in San Bernardino California written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cost and feasibility of retrofitting the National Orange Show Facilities to use geothermal heat instead of natural gas for heating are determined. Because of the limited usage of the smaller facilities the study was limited to the conversion of the six major buildings: Domed, Hobby, Citrus, Auditorium, Restaurant and Commercial. A major problem is that most of the buildings are used on a very limited basis. This drastically reduced the amount of savings that could be used to amortize the retrofit cost. Another problem is that the buildings are spread over a large area and so the below grade piping costs were high. Finally, all of the buildings except for the Auditorium have direct gas fired heaters that would require all new terminal heating systems. In order to limit the retrofit cost, the retrofit system was designed to handle less than the peak load. This seemed appropriate because the facility might not even be in operation when a peak load condition occurred. Also, the existing systems could be used to supplement the geothermal system if necessary. The calculated and design peak loads are summarized.

Book Geothermal Heating Retrofit Study for the State Office Employment Development Buildings in San Bernardino California

Download or read book Geothermal Heating Retrofit Study for the State Office Employment Development Buildings in San Bernardino California written by Sosoka & Associates and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the economics of converting the State Office Building and the E.D.D. Building in San Bernardino from natural gas to geothermal fluids. The heat from the geothermal fluid would be used for space and domestic hot water heating. Two basic design approaches were developed for the space heating systems. One design allowed the geothermal fluids to circulate directly through the existing heating system. It was believed that this was a feasible approach because of the unusually high quality of the geothermal fluid. The alternate design incorporated a flat plate heat exchanger to isolate the geothermal fluid from the closed loop heating system. In the case of the domestic hot water the designs included double walled heat exchangers to comply with the normal code requirements. These heat exchangers are the same type that are used for solar heating systems. As a result of this study it is recommended that only the space heating system for the State Office Building be retrofitted for geothermal at this time. The distance of the E.D.D. Mechanical Room from Third Street combined with the relatively low gas usage are the major factors in making this bulding a poor application. Also contributing to the poor economics is the fact that the E.D.D. Building is a relatively small building and the potential utility savings is correspondingly small. Retrofit of the domestic hot water for the State Office Building is also not recommended at this time because of the poor return on investment. The piping for the water heated will have to be extended from the geothermal lines in the basement up to the roof level. The cost of this piping plus the required double walled heat exchanger result in a prohibitive retrofit cost. While the direct use of geothermal water in the space heating system for the State Office Building has a better return on investment (27%), it is recommended that the isolated system using the heat exchanger be installed. While the return on investment is less (13%), it avoids any potential problems from the geothermal fluid in the system. After sufficient operating experience has been obtained with the geothermal fluid it may be possible to recommend that future systems be designed without the isolation heat exchanger.

Book Geothermal Heating Retrofit Study for the Cal Trans District Offices in San Bernardino California

This book was released on 1983 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the economics of converting the main building and the annex of the Cal Trans facility in San Bernardino from natural gas to geothermal fluids. As a result of this study it is recommended that only the space heating system for the main building be retrofitted for geothermal at this time. The distance of the annex from the main building and the geothermal mains in Arrowhead Avenue and Second Street is a major factor in making this building a poor application. Also contributing to the poor economics is the fact that the annex is a relatively small building and the potential utility savings is correspondingly small. Retrofit of the domestic hot water for the main building is also not recommended at this time because of the poor return on investment. The piping for the space heating system will be sized so that the domestic hot water system can be converted at a later date without any penalty. Fortunately the boiler and water heaters are in close proximity. While the direct use of geothermal water in the space heating system has a better return on investment (29%), it is recommended that the isolated system using the heat exchanger be installed. While the return on investment is less (16%), it avoids any potential problems from the geothermal fluid in the system. After sufficient operating experience has been obtained with the geothermal fluid it may be possible to recommend that future systems be designed without the isolation heat exchanger.
