Book Samuel the Prophet Classic Reprint

Download or read book Samuel the Prophet Classic Reprint written by F. B. Meyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel has the distinction of being Israel's last judge and the reference point of a new phase in the history of God's Chosen People. He also is the one who picked and anointed the first two kings of Israel, underlining the important role that the prophet played in Jewish history. As such, it is not surprising for him to become the subject of a book, especially Rev. F.B. Meyer's Samuel the Prophet. The author closely examines the life of this great Hebrew prophet, dwelling longer on the most poignant periods of the subject's life. He adds dimension to what is already known about Samuel by adding his own reflections and commentaries, which help readers appreciate the meaning of various symbols, rituals, and events that took place while the Israeli judge was still alive. With the inclusion of Rev. Meyer's spiritual exhortations, this 1910 edition also serves as a material that one can reflect upon and also use as a guide in enriching one's faith. This volume is a definitive account of Samuel's life, which combines references to the prophet found in the Old and New Testament. As such, Pastor Meyer did manage to knit together a cohesive, accurate, and detailed portrait of this powerful Biblical figure. This indeed is one book that those serving in a community-based ministry, as well as those studying Biblical history, will find a very informative and spiritually enriching resource. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hannah, the Mother of Samuel the Prophet and Judge of Israel: A Sacred Drama One object of them is to exemplify the compo sitiou and style of the early Hebrew Scriptures, as remarkably adapted to produce a dramatic effect. Any careful reader of the First Book of Samuel, for instance, will observe a succession of narratives, all connected in the while history, each being a sequel to the preceding, each serving for the basis of a drama, and having its distinctive circumstances, and separate unity. The patience and the reward of Hannah's trust in god are the subject of the first, perhaps the least interesting. From that day the prophet Samuel became, not only his mentor, but his guardian angel, God's special messenger, and afterwards his stern rebuker. Thus it sometimes happens in our less important lives, that the merest casualty brings us acquainted with the person whose thread of life is thenceforward to be closely twisted with our own. In those days of youthful simplicity and innocent surprise, Saul was no doubt deeply under the in uence of relig ious feeling. The shudder of reverential awe had not worn away under custom in sinning. He heard with astonishment his designation as the deliverer of Israel; and bowed his head with humble thoughtfulness to the great anointing. He even became. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Samuel and His Age: A Study in the Constitutional History of Israel Here are certain conspicuous personalities in the history of the Kingdom of God in the Old Testament, men whose lives form epochs in the opening up of His ways to His people. Moses is immeasurably the grandest of these. Probably the next to him is Samuel; and just as we understand Samuel, his character, his position, his offices, and his work, or fail to understand him, we shall succeed in understanding, or shall fail to understand, very much of Jehovah's dealings with Israel. There is one very marked resem blance between Moses and Samuel - both exercised the three great functions in the Hebrew Commonwealth, those of prophet, priest, and supreme ruler, combining in their own persons three offices which in ordinary circumstances were jealously kept separate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Samuel in the Temple I should hope that every member of a Sabbath school knew all about the story of little Samuel, whose history is in the Bible. Yet 1 fear such is not the case; and therefore propose to call attention to it in these few pages. He was the first-born, and his mother, whose name was Hannah, loved him very much. She had prayed for a great while, that God would give her that little boy; and when he was born, she knew that God had heard her prayer, and she was very grateful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Readings With My Children, Vol. 2 Sheba) saw that Samuel was a true prophet of the Lord, and they had faith in his words. Now, you will see from the story that I am going to tell you, that the Israelites were foolish enough Sometimes to act with out coming to Samuel for advice. It was some years after Samuel's vision when the Philistines, those old enemies of the Israelites, came up from their own country to fight them. You heard SO much about the Philistines in the story of Samson, that I hope you do not want me to remind you they were a wicked people who lived in Canaan. They never prayed to God, but to idols, and it vexed them to see the children of Israel serving the true God, and they Often quarrelled and fought with them. N ow, of course, if the children of Israel had wished to do the right thing, they would have come to the prophet Samuel, to ask his advice before they went out to fight the Philistines. Instead of this, out they all ran, with their swords, or anything they could find to fight with, against the Phili tines. Well, what do you expect to hear happened? Who do you think got the best of it Not the Israelites, you may be sure, when God felt angry with them, and would not help them. Just see what these Silly wicked people did next. Instead of coming penitent to Eli lor Samuel, telling him how sorry they were for their misconduct, they went to the priests, Hophni and Phinehas, the wicked sons of Eli, and asked them to bring the Ark of God out among their tents, for then nothing could prevent them conquering the Philistines. If Hophni and Phinehas had not been Sinful men, they would have said, No; we must not bring the Holy Ark into battle but they only thought of pleasing the people and getting presents4 the philistines and the ark. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of Samuel Theflhome in which Samuel is born has some points Of quiet interest about it; but these are marred by serious defects. It is a religious household, at least in the sense that the outward duties Of religion are care fully attended to; but the moral tone is defective. First, there is that radical blemish - want Of unity. NO doubt it was tacitly permitted to a man in those days to have two wives. But where there were two wives there were two centres Of interest and feeling, and discord must ensue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of Samuel: With Map, Notes and Introduction The two most important mss. Of the LXX containing the book of Samuel are the Alexandrine ms. (denoted by the letter A) written in the fifth century. And now preserved in the British Museum; and the Vatican ms. (denoted by the letter B) assigned to the fourth century, and preserved in the Vatican Library at Rome. The text of the former in the Book of Samuel has been corrected for the most part to agree with the existing Hebrew text: that of the latter differs considerably from it, and although disfigured by mistakes, glosses, marginal notes inserted in the text by ignorant scribes, and similar defects, appears to preserve evidence for an original text older and in some places more correct than the existing Hebrew recensionl. That the Hebrew text of Samuel is by no means free from errors is clear from internal considerations and from a com parison of the passages which exist in duplicate elsewhere. These, with the exception of 1 Sam. Xxxi. Chr. X. 1 - 12) belong to the Second Book, and need not be enumerated here. The principal readings in which the Septuagint differs from the Hebrew are mentioned in the notes, partly with a View to the criticism of the text, partly to exhibit the form of the text which was current in a great part of the Christian Church for many centuries after its first foundation.
