Book Sampling for Measurement of Odours

Download or read book Sampling for Measurement of Odours written by Peter Gostelow and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2003-05-31 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into the sampling and measurement of odours has developed in a number of sectors, especially the agriculture, food and process industries, with knowledge from each sector being transferred to the wastewater and solid waste management sectors. Progressive developments in odour research have resulted in researchers re-tracing original research studies to understand the contribution and variability of differing sampling and measurement techniques. There are, however, very few reviews that compile earlier studies across each sector. This study looks at the information used to support current practices in odour sampling and measurement for impact reduction. Sampling for Measurement of Odours reviews European and other internationally available research studies to understand odour sampling and measurement practice in waste applications. The emphasis is placed on appropriate odour sampling and its relationship to differing measurement techniques. As recent developments in standardisation of odour measurement have reduced much of the variation and identified best practice in this area there is, at present, a far greater variation in sampling techniques with serious implications for the quality of samples obtained and their usefulness for assessing odour impact. The review considers the available information on uncontrolled area sources, identifies factors influencing sample losses or transformations and looks at information on the sources of variability identified through standardisation programmes. This need for this report was identified by the Odour Network, an EPSRC-sponsored discussion platform intended to promote multidisciplinary research in the areas of odour measurement, modelling and treatment. Scientific and Technical Report No.17

Book Odour Impact Assessment Handbook

Download or read book Odour Impact Assessment Handbook written by Vincenzo Belgiorno and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Odours have become a priority concern for facility operators, engineers and urban planners who deal with waste and industrial treatment plants. The subjectivity of smell perception, its variability due to frequency and weather conditions, and the complex nature of the substances involved, has long hampered the regulation of odour emissions. This book provides a comprehensive framework for the assessment, measurement and monitoring of odour emissions, and covers: Odour characterization and exposure effects Instruments and methods for sampling and measurement Strategies for odour control Dispersion modelling for odour exposure assessment Odour regulations and policies Procedures for odour impact assessment Case studies: Wastewater treatment, composting, industrial and CAFO plants, and landfill Intended for researchers in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, and civil engineering, this book is also an invaluable guide for industry professionals working in wastewater treatment, environmental and air analysis, and waste management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wastewater treatment works have the potential to generate unpleasant odours, which can results in annoyance and consequently have a detrimental effect on a local population. As a result 'odour control and prevention' has become an important consideration both in the management of existing facilities and in the design and gaining of planning consent for new works. Odours in Wastewater Treatment provides readers with a detailed discussion on the basic principles involved in the formation of volatile compounds in wastewater treatment. Accounts are given of recent developments in the sampling and measurement of odours, practical examples in the prediction and dispersion of odorous emissions are offered and an overview of the technologies currently used to contain and treat odorous compounds presented. Contents Introduction Odours associated with wastewater treatment Odour sampling and measurement Assessment and prediction of nuisance odours Odour control and treatment

Book Introduction to Odour Measurement and Odour Sensors

Download or read book Introduction to Odour Measurement and Odour Sensors written by Himanshu Patel and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the five senses, the sense of smell is the most complex and unique in structure and organization.Odour can be measured using standardized methods that are objective, quantifiable, dependable, and reproducible. Unfortunately, odours have measurable parameters that are not generally understood. The basic odour parameters are odour strength (concentration) and odour character (standard descriptors). Odour strength and character can be measured/quantified in an odour laboratory from a "whole air" bag sample that is collected at the odour source.Odour is measurable using scientific methods. Odour testing has evolved over time with changes in terminology, methods, and instrumentation. Odour terminology is linked to standard methods and the instrumentation used in these standard methods. A clear understanding of odour terminology is needed in order to discuss the uses of odour measurements. In this book, I have integrated the basics of odour, odour analysis techniques, sensors used for odour analysis and overview of odour measurement techniques.

Book Human Responses to Environmental Odors

Download or read book Human Responses to Environmental Odors written by Amos Turk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Responses to Environmental Odors presents some of the approaches to the study of the human olfactory response. This book contains 11 chapters that describe the complexity in human olfaction. This text deals first with the sensory and physicochemical aspects of odor. These topics are followed by discussions on the sampling, transport, dispersal, odor intensities and preferences, and psychophysical scaling. The discussion then shifts to the applications of some previously slighted fundamentals, such as vapor pressure phenomena and the chemical stability of odorants in the atmosphere. Other chapters are devoted to community odor problems and annoyance reactions, combustion odors, and laser Raman spectroscopy. These chapters include odor measurement and control. This book is of great value to flavor scientists, chemists, physiologists, and behavioral scientists.

Book Odour and Volatile Organic Compounds

Download or read book Odour and Volatile Organic Compounds written by John Kaiyun Jiang and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2001-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently the development of odour measurement, regulation and control techniques has made great progress, with new and updated standards and regulations for odour control and measurement in Europe and Australasia; in the United States, odour was listed as one of the key areas for action by the Agricultural Air Quality Task Force. In these circumstances, it is clear that a uniform systematic approach to quantifying and solving odour problems worldwide is highly desirable. This motivated the 1st IWA International Conference on Odours and VOCs, with its focus on ?measurement, regulation and control techniques?. The conference emphasised the need to standardise the approaches to odour measurement, to quantify odour impact from various emission sources for regulatory purposes, and to devise ways of alleviating odour impact on local communities. These subjects are of concern nationally and internationally because of the decreasing tolerance to such impacts by local communities and the current lack of effective solutions. From the papers presented 42 have been selected for these proceedings, dealing with olfactometry; field observation and sampling; odour regulations; physical treatment; odour dispersion modelling; volatilisation models; animal farming odours; manure treatment; biofilters; odour control for anaerobic ponds; and H2S removal. They represent the latest work of leading experts from European, Asian, North American, Australian and New Zealand universities, agencies and organisations and will prove a major resource for all interested in the research and practice of odour measurement and control.
