Book Birth Control Sex and Marriage in Britain 1918 1960

Download or read book Birth Control Sex and Marriage in Britain 1918 1960 written by Kate Fisher and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first half of the twentieth century witnessed a revolution in contraceptive behaviour as the large Victorian family disappeared. This book offers a new perspective on the gender relations, sexual attitudes, and contraceptive practices that accompanied the emergence of the smaller family in modern Britain. Kate Fisher draws on a range of first-hand evidence, including over 190 oral history interviews, in which individuals born between 1900 and 1930 described their marriages and sexual relationships. By using individual testimony she challenges many of the key conditions that have long been envisaged by demographic and historical scholars as necessary for any significant reduction in average family size to take place. Dr Fisher demonstrates that a massive expansion in birth control took place in a society in which sexual ignorance was widespread; that effective family limitation was achieved without the mass adoption of new contraceptive technologies; that traditional methods, such as withdrawal, abstinence, and abortion were often seen as preferable to modern appliances, such as condoms and caps; that communication between spouses was not key to the systematic adoption of contraception; and, above all, that women were not necessarily the driving force behind the attempt to avoid pregnancy. Women frequently avoided involvement in family planning decisions and practices, whereas the vast majority of men in Britain from the interwar period onward viewed the regular use of birth control as a masculine duty and obligation. By allowing this generation to speak for themselves, Kate Fisher produces a richer understanding of the often startling social attitudes and complex conjugal dynamics that lay behind the vast changes in contraceptive behaviour and family size in the twentieth century.

Book Voluntary Work in the Welfare State

Download or read book Voluntary Work in the Welfare State written by Mary Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1998. This is Volume XVII of eighteen of a series on the Sociology of Public Policy, Welfare and Social Work. Voluntary work is undertaken for three main reasons; first, there are jobs to be done which cannot be or at least will not be done by paid personnel; second, the opportunity to give service meets a personal need felt by individual people; and third, voluntary action is a powerful force for social progress. These three reasons provide the explanation and the justification for the existence of voluntary work. The purpose of this book is to examine the present position and future role of voluntary work in the United Kingdom and to analyse its value to the individual and to the community. Its limitations as well as its achievements will be considered and criticism as well as praise will be recorded.

Book Critical Criminology Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Critical Criminology Routledge Revivals written by Ian Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975, this collection of essays expands upon the themes and ideas developed in the editors’ previous work, the visionary and groundbreaking text: The New Criminology. Directed at orthodox criminology, this is a partisan work written by a group of criminologists committed to a social transformation: a transformation to a society that does not criminalize deviance. Included are American contributions, particularly from the School of Criminology at Berkeley, represented by Hermann and Julia Schwendinger and Tony Platt, together with essays by Richard Quinney and William Chambliss. From Britain, Geoff Pearson considers deviancy theory as ‘misfit sociology’ and Paul Hirst attacks deviancy theory from an Althusserian Marxist position. The editors contribute a detailed introductory essay extending the position developed in The New Criminology, and two other pieces which attempt to continue the task of translating criminology from its traditional correctionalist stance to a commitment to socialist diversity and a crime-free set of social arrangements.
