Download or read book Gloucester in the Great War written by Derek Tait and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2016-01-31 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When news of the war broke out in 1914, nothing could prepare the citizens of Gloucester for the changes that would envelop their city over the next four years. The story of Gloucester in the First World War is both an interesting and intriguing one. The city played a key role in the deployment of troops to Northern Europe as well as supplying vital munitions. Local men responded keenly to recruitment drives and thousands of soldiers were billeted in the city before being sent off to fight the enemy overseas. The city also played a vital role caring for the many wounded soldiers who returned home from the front. The effect of the war on Gloucester was great. By the end of the conflict, there wasn't a family in Gloucester who hadn't lost a son, father, nephew, uncle or brother. There were tremendous celebrations in the streets as the end of the war was announced but the effects of the war lasted for years to come. This powerful account of a city that showed great courage and determination in a time of adversity ensures that Gloucester's people, who lived through the four intense years of conflict, are remembered for their immense contribution the war effort.

Download or read book Remember the 70s written by Derek Tait and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Bohemian Rhapsody and David Bowie to Star Wars and Watergate, the history of an unforgettable era that rocked (and discoed) the world. The 1970s was one of the most exciting, innovative, and colorful decades of the twentieth century. It was ten years of major events in music (Freddie Mercury, The Sex Pistols, The Carpenters, and Blondie), film (Jaws, Dirty Harry, The Godfather, and Saturday Night Fever), television (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, All in the Family, Benny Hill, and The Waltons), and politics (Richard Nixon, Margaret Thatcher, and Jane Fonda). It was also a time of social change (the women’s movement and gay rights), and unforgettable nutty trends (orange shag carpets, bell bottoms, platform shoes, and wing-collared shirts). From home-life and fashions to entertainment, sports, headlining-making crimes, and pioneering new technologies, Remember the 70s is a fabulous record of a chaotic, pivotal, loud, and revolutionary era. For those who lived through it, and for those who just heard about it, historian Derek Tait (who came of age in it—and has the photos to prove it) offers fascinating insights, truths, and reflections into a dazzling pop-culture turning point that resonates to this day.

Download or read book Devon at War 1939 45 written by Derek Tait and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When war was declared on 1 September 1939, the people of Devon pulled together in a way that they hadn't done since the Great War of 1914-18. This book covers the people of Devon's contribution to the war effort, from the commencement of the conflict in September 1939, to its end in September 1945. It features many forgotten news stories of the day and looks at the changes to civilian's everyday lives, entertainment, spies and the internment of aliens living within the area. Devon became vital as a base for troops and as a dispatch point for the many men who left to fight in Europe. Several RAF bases were also established within the county to repel German attacks. Air raid shelters were erected in gardens and at public places and many children living in larger cities were swiftly evacuated to the countryside, as Plymouth and Exeter both suffered greatly from German bombing, with much of Plymouth being obliterated. Carrying a gas mask, rationing, the make-do-and-mend culture and the collection of scrap metal all became a generic way of life. Many of the jobs left open by men fighting abroad were taken up by women on the Home Front. The Women's Voluntary Service assisted with the evacuation of mothers and children to the country, carried out civil defense duties and provided food and clothing for the many refugees from occupied Europe. During the buildup to D Day, American troops were trained and stationed within the county before leaving for the beaches of Normandy. Slapton Sands, Dartmoor and Woolacombe were all used as training grounds with tragic loss of life at Slapton. Devon played a truly vital role in the war and its people contributed greatly to bringing the world changing conflict to an end.
