Book excerpt: "This book describes the extent to which four village communities have participated in the market sector introduced by the Europeans ; the ways in which they have responded to the various incentives provided by the trade stores ; the manner in which they have accommodated an increasing need for money. The traditional and trade sectors of the village economies are described, measured and related to the levels of incentive for participation in the market sector offered in each vilage. The Samoans adopted a dual economy in which the old subsistence-based socially motivated system continues to dominate the new market system of the foreigners."--Jacket

Book The Making of Modern Samoa

Download or read book The Making of Modern Samoa written by Malama Meleisea and published by [email protected]. This book was released on 1987 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since independence in January 1962, several constitutional court cases have exposed the dilemma which the Western Samoa Government is facing balancing fa'a Samoa (Samoan customs and traditions) with Western legal systems of authority. This book traces the clash between Samoan and Western notions of government and law from the 1830s to the 1980s emphasizing the hitherto neglected interpretation of events from a Samoan perspective. As a critical reinterpretation of the literature on Western Samoa, drawing on oral sources and material from the archives of the Land and Titles Court of Western Samoa, the book provides important new insights into pre-colonial regimes, racial issues and the contemporary political problems of the independent state of Western Samoa."--Back cover.

Book Law Reform in Plural Societies

  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2017-11-04
  • ISBN : 3319655248
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Law Reform in Plural Societies written by Teleiai Lalotoa Mulitalo Ropinisone Silipa Seumanutafa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asserts that the Pacific Islands continue to struggle with the colonial legacy of plural legal systems, comprising laws and legal institutions from both the common law and the customary legal system. It also investigates the extent to which customary principles and values are accommodated in legislation. Focusing on Samoa, the author argues that South Pacific countries continue to adopt a Western approach to law reform without considering legal pluralism, which often results in laws which are unsuitable and irrelevant to Samoa. In the context of this system of law making, effective law reform in Samoa can only be achieved where the law reform process recognises the legitimacy of the two primary legal systems. The book goes on to present a law reform process that is more relevant and suitable for law making in the Pacific Islands or any post-colonial societies.
